Tamara and the Scene

Does anybody remember Tamara and the Scene? They were a group from the 80's that came out of Paisley.

If I'm not mistaken they did "Affection" and "Everybody Dance". You would probably know the songs if you heard them.
I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

yea and the lead singer was Margie Cox
who had that single on Pailey park records or 1-800-newfunk record.

she now plays or sings with Dr. Mambos Combo in Minneapolis on Monday nights at a place called Bunkers.

i am a regular there and she is the sweetest person to meet. great personality. fantastic singer. if you are ever willing and able check it out.

if you already have you know what i am talking about.

it's tamara and the SEEN, not "scene".
and they didn't come out of paisley, they came from Jesse Johnson's camp.

No it is called the Legendary Combo. I use to be a regular there also. I started to going back in the early 90's. That is when they were really off the hook. They have singing the same songs for a long time. It is time for them to start sing up to date or even closer songs.

I loved their self-titled first album. I was a hardcore Jesse fan back then so I would pick up any record he was involved with at the time. Ta Mara's first album yielded three singles:

Everybody Dance/Lonely Heart
Affecttion (sic)/You Turn Me Up (non LP track)
Thinking About You/Long Cold Nights

Her second album titled 'Blueberry Gossip,' was still credited to Ta Mara and The Seen, but I think Jesse played all the instruments. There were two singles:

Blueberry Gossip/Summertime Love
True Ecstasy/???

I had a cassette copy of their first album, which I now have as MP3.... and an actual cassette of BlueBerry Gossip, their 2nd album.

First, isn't "Tamara" really named Margie Cox? And I think she was singing with Prince or a Prince-related group really early on (the Time?)?

Then Jesse made her his protege. I'm not sure if she wrote or played on any of the songs.... but Tamara was kind of like Jesse's version of Sheila E in that she was a female musician protege (kinda like Teena Marie was to Rick James).

The first album is really good... very Minneapolis sound-ish. Blueberry Gossip has a remake of EveryDay People by Sly and The Stone if I recall (which is interesting cuz Jesse had Sly guesting on Crazay from his 2nd album).

Later on , wasn't Margie Cox on Paisley Park? Cuz I have a video of her doing something.... and I htink she's on the NPG NewYear's video or something.

ummmm yes but it is the Legendary Dr. Mambo Combo. they only shorten it for the advertisment.

i never ended going still do to this day. been since i were not of age. and i am well into my thirties. but the point is really mute isn't it. the post was on Margie Cox not the name of the band. thanks tho.

andddd if read correctly she has a single out of paisley park on 1-800-newfunk. check it.
if you listen prince is in the vocals on the background, plus she does have an album with paisley park records that got shelved.

she expected it to be out but it never was put out.

now the group Tamara and the seen, yes that was Jesse's.

The reason why they changed it is because when they fired Tim Emerson he had the rights to that name and so that is why it is called the Legendary Combo

Once the cord is severed so to speak, and Prince isn't overseeing the final product it's totally different to me. The artists that Jesse produced (Ta Mara, da'Krash, Sue Ann, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, After 7, etc.) are different than the ones for which Prince wrote and produced.

Jesse Johnson is great, but alot of his lyrics were really simple, especially the choruses...

"Oh,oh,oh,oh,oh,oh,oh,oh...everybody dance
Oh,oh,oh,oh,oh,oh...oh,oh...everybody dance"

And let's not forget his own solo debut single...

I wanna be your man baby...oh oh oh
I wanna be your man baby...oh oh oh "

I guess it's safe to assume that "oh" was one of favorite words back then? lol

I'm glad that you have your own opinion. That is why this is a discussion/forum group. Yes once the cord is severed that Prince isn't overseeing the final product, but would you agree that the start of Jesse's career came from being in the group? Even though he first started out in Illinois.

I should clarify my opinion. Jesse definitely came out of Paisley Park. (The Jamie Starr productions are the equivalent of Paisley Park before the label was created.) Ta Mara, Alexander O'Neal, etc. may have had their start in Minneapolis, but since their first official releases weren't overseen by Prince, I don't consider them part of Paisley Park. Part of the Minneapolis scene yes, but Paisley Park no.
