Morris Day Back With New Album

Posted April 20, 2004-- When Nas was talking about bringing ’88 back on “Made You Look” apparently Morris Day was listening. Or maybe Day figured if Prince could move the crowd 20 years after his heyday, so could he. So those of you who remember the “Bird” and the “Walk” rejoice!

Morris Day is back with the original Time band members (except Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) and a brand new album called “It’s About Time.”

Day says that “For a long time, I felt hip-hop had a headlock on the industry. "But thanks to the rappers sampling all the old-school funk, my phone started ringing off the hook to tour again. So I said, 'Let's get back in the game.'"

Day was the frontman for the Time who was featured in the film “Purple Rain.” They are considered one of the seminal bands of the 80’s with their self-titled debut and follow-up “What Time Is It?” among the classic recording of the pre-hip-hop era.

“It’s About Time” will be released on Hollywood Records on May 22nd.

Day and the band will make an appearance on the “Eve” show on UPN on May 10th and will be the featured musical performers on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on May 25th.

Oh this just keeps getting better and better. Let's hope they are going old school.

Really looking forward to this. Does anyone know if Jesse Johnson is on it?

So Jesse is back too? Nahh..probably just another article filled with factual errors.

Oh well, it only took them about 15 years to come out with a new album...it will be interesting to see if it is any good.

I'll betcha right now, Prince wrote the songs for this too... The Time is another outlet for his music.... didn't he write most of their songs?

I think I remember reading some interview with Jimmy Jam a few years back, where he said he wanted to get things going again with the Time, and they were just waiting for Prince to give them the material or the go ahead or something like that...

This is great, but I got a question: Is it really a Time album w/o Prince in the background?
Morris Day's solo stuff was hit and miss. With out Prince (and probably without Jesse) isn't this just a Morris Day solo effort?

From what I've heard, Prince did play sparingly on this record (although he may not take credit for it) but I don't believe he wrote the songs.
And I'm 99% sure that Jesse is not included on the actual album, although Chance will be,
as most of this material has been recorded and finished for 2 years.
I assume that Jesse is in the fold as far as the tour goes.

I would hold off on everyone's excitement.
Jimmy Jam is currently on KFAN radio in Minneapolis right now (a local sports-talk station, but he comes on a couple times a year to discuss music for about an hour).
He mentioned that Morris has been working on a solo album, and that he and Terry are involved (probably producing or executive producing in a limited role). From what I gather, this may actually be a Morris Day solo album that BET is reporting, and not a Time reunion. Interesting note: Prince does own the name "The Time", so Morris can't record or tour under that name unless Prince gives his consent.
The album coming out does not appear to be the "finished" time album that has been done for over 2 years.
UPDATE: Through my retail source, Morris Day does indeed have a solo album scheduled for release on JUNE 22nd, Not May 22nd. May 22nd is a Saturday. I think this story on BET.com has some serious holes in it.

That had to be a lil tongue-in-cheek jab at Prince lol I hope its a good collection of material... it *should* be. Unfortunately aside from 'Sometimes it Gets Lonely' and 'Skillet', what I know as the 'non-Prince' stuff by the Time is pretty forgettable.

You're Wrong!! no no no!

From MTV

Just as Prince is undergoing a revival, his old mate Morris Day of the Time is prepping the release of a new album, It's About Time, due June 22. The record contains old live recordings of classic hits from the Time and Day's solo career, plus four new songs written by Day and original members Jerome Benton, Jellybean Johnson and Monte Moir. ...

I'm wrong? Really? The following internet sources are all posting articles
from the same "MISLEADING" press release sent out from Morris.

1) I work at a major music retailer, and we have a MORRIS DAY solo album on
our schedule for June 22nd, not a Time album.
2) I know people who are very close to most of the original members of the time.
Let's just put it this way. You all found out about the new album BEFORE they did.
This entire thing is Morris' way to make a buck. He's been recording tracks without any of the time members, yet wants to use their name (and if necessary, their likeness) to promote it.
3) The classic time material on this release is going to be LIVE stuff.
4) And yes Prince DOES need to OK all of this, if Morris Day tries to use the
name "THE TIME" with any of it, and I don't think prince would OK this without
at least some of the other members involvement.
If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

I just read that this new album is only going to have four new songs on it...damn, they have about 15 years to write songs for a new album and they can only come up with four songs!?!?! What lazy motherf'ers...there's no way I'll buy this album.
