What's it like? I never bought this one, and I'd love to know if it was any good. Tell me!

I think Taja Sevelle has three full length CDs: "Love Is Contagious", "Fountains Free", and "Toys of Vanity". LIC is pretty good, kinda breezy, offbeat pop. I especially like the title track and "Fly For Your Painted Rainbow". I gave the others albums a couple of spins but nothing really caught my ear. Not sure I can say that they were bad, because I really can't remember anything from them. Maybe I should go back and listen. I think LIC is worthwhile though.

Of those three CDs, I enjoy the most recent one ("Toys of Vanity") the most. The production is a bit more robust, and I think you get a better feel for Taja as an artist and lyricist. Now, granted, a lot of times it ain't a pretty picture. smile

But some tracks on TOV are really cool gems.

The one I mean is her 1987 Paisely Park released self-titled debut album with 2 Prince songs on it.

I have it on vinyl.Back in the 80s,I usually bought EVERY Paisley Park release, even the albums that didn't have any direct Prince involvement. The Taja Sevelle album is a mixed bag.Let's just state the obvious: She's not really much of a singer (surprise, surprise). But she has a certain charm and her album had some decent moments. The first single "Love Is Contagious" is breezy and nice,if you can deal with the off-key vocals throughout. The funky "Popular",with it's swaggering bassline and infectious synth line,is a highlight. It boasts a strong, catchy chorus...

"She wants to be so Popular,it makes her stand out on the street at night
And wave her skirt at every boy who passes by,so Popular
If only she'd give love a try....love a try"

Lyrically, this is an ambitious album."Infatuation" finds Taja messing around with a 17-year old boy.Just a few songs later,"Mama 16" tackles the sensitive issue of a young girl having a baby."Fly For Your Painted Rainbow" offers a strong, inspirational message (although,as with Prince,it's not always easy to understand exactly what she means, lol). There are two Prince-written tracks,"Wouldn't You Love To Love Me" and "If I Could Get Your Attention".Great songs!! There's also a wonderful you-did-me-wrong ballad "How Could You Treat Me So Bad".Some songs suffer from stale,late-80s production gimmicks, and Taja's songwriting is uneven and unfocused on a few tracks. But it's not a bad album.

I had it. Bought a copy back in the late 80's... it was pretty good for it's time. There were a couple of stand out tracks besides the Prince ones. She's an excellent singer. I saw her hanging out with Prince at the 2000 Celebration and she is still fine.

As for my CD... I MP3'd and then sold it a couple of years ago.

Have you tried secondspin? www.secondspin.com

They've normally got a couple of Taja CDs - cheap as anything too.
