CATS who weren't in the PRINCE camp but could've been...

Giorgio great look but not very talented musically

Bryan Loren Talented, plays all intruments like Prince, not heavily vocally impressing though.

Chuckii Booker the CLOSEST talent wise to Prince. not sure if people know how really bad this cat is.

anyone out there I'm missing or would like to elaborate on any of the one's ive mentioned?

Hmmm....lemme see:

Bernard Wright-remember "Who Do You Love" from 1985? Great session artist.

Marcus Miller-musically maybe more talented than Prince.

Kashif

Rick James-why not?

I"ll think of some more later. LOL

Yeah, Chukki WAS talented, and an above average singer too!

I think Jodeci member 'Devante swing' could of been in Prince's camp! He wrote, arranged, composed and produced alot of Jodeci's material! I actuallly heard he went to ask prince for a job (before forming Jodeci) but Prince turned him down! (which was a shame and bad judgement on princes behalf).

Other then that, maybe New kids on the block writer/producer Maurice starr (in late 80's), Al b.sure (good producer and alright singer), Dr freeze (wrote Bellbivdevoe's "Poison" and Color me badds "I wanna sex you up"...), Narada michael Walden- (Tevin campbell, Whitney houtson producer/songwriter)

Not that this is really related to this topic, but I always would of liked Prince to of worked with corny pop star debbie Gibson (instead of Martika maybe!), they both started writing at a young age and are proberly both workaholics plus when Debbie collaberated with Lamont Dozier (of 60's super team Holland/Dozier/Hollan|) on her "Anything is possible" album, the collaberation was good.....anyway

Tupac of course. Remember when he was a backup dancer for Digital Underground? He would have totally jumped at the chance to be w/ Prince in those days. Imagine a world where Tupac rapped for Prince instead of Tony M...

***Giorgio almost became a Prince protege. In the mid-80s,his demo tape made it's way to Paisley Park Records and Prince was interested in signing him.But according to him, they offered him a raw deal."Prince and BrownMark wanted to take all the credit for writing and producing my songs",he complained to Black Beat magazine in 1986."Now I understand how Prince's thing works. He finds people who would do anything to become a star.I'm not one of those people".

***Micki Free, the guitarist for Shalamar in the mid-80s,is another artist who could have been in the Prince camp.He became friends with Prince and the two of them jammed together a few times.Several times, there were rumors that he would be joining the Prince camp. With his androgynous look,he could have easily been a member of Mazarati. In 1991,when Jesse Johnson was fired from The Time, there was talk of Prince wanting Micki Free to replace him.

***Madonna is another artist who probably would have become a Prince protege if he had spotted her before others did. She's a huge fan,but it's best that she decided to make it without his help.

Dang, Micki Free in The Time? That would have been something to see--kind of like when Dave Navarro joined the Chili Peppers. No one beats Jesse though. I just wish I knew what he was up to these days.

I agree, but it still would have been something to see. Dave Navarro didn't exactly work with RHCP either, but when he became their guitarist, it had rock fans in a tizzy.

Does anyone remember Lushus Daim and The Pretty Vain? She was a Vanity wannabe in the mid-eighties with two so-so singles, "More Than You Can Handle" and "The One You Love". I may have her appearance on Soul Train on a video buried somewhere in my parents' house.

Sorry,I was just agreeing with you, plus after his "Niice and wild" Cd came out (with that brilliant title track), he sort of dissapeared (off the pop/rnb scene anyway)! I know he produced and wrote for other artists, but except for Philip baileys solo album in '94 ("Live it up" is way out fonky!), I ain't seen him be credited on anything since! Iam sure he is still talented though and iam sure he has done other stuff!

Chukki rules plus "Turned away" is a classic still to this day

Has Ta Mara done anything since her song on the 1-800-New-Funk CD?

I heard a story how Andre Cymone, while producing the first Pretty Poison album introduced Jade Starling to Prince and she performed one of her songs for him in the studio. According to her, Prince was really impressed.

Kool Skool was originally da'Krash then the lead singer left the band and they went in the rap direction. I liked da'Krash, but didn't care for Kool Skool.

Micki could rip on guitar - his latest album proves it. I dont think he's Prince or Jesse but he was one of the better funk rock guitarists

One of the funkiest non-Prince albums I ever heard was the self titled Madame X LP produced by Klymaxx's Bernadette Cooper. It's some real sophisticated, high-class, quality funk. They had one top 10 R&B hit, "Just That Type Of Girl" amd then broke up. Lead singer Alisa Randolph released a solo album a few years later that was cool, but that Madame X album remains one of my favorites to this day. Anyone who hasn't heard it, go out and find it. You will not be disappointed!
