A voice like this does not come along very often. A voice capable of reaching out of a speaker and pulling you back through; taking you on an unforgettable ride is RARE, VERY RARE. While you can hear the influences of her heroines (Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan) in her voice, there has never been a voice exactly like hers.
Musicians of this caliber also do not come along very often; especially those capable of mastering the different disciplines required of drums, keyboards, guitar, saxophone and bass without any formal training. While the ability for one person to sound like a full live band without computers is RARE, VERY RARE (she plays most of the music on her album) there has never been a player exactly like her.
A performance this spellbinding and electric does not come along very often, especially performers capable of mesmerizing audiences with their voice alone. Performers who give a brand new gift of song with every tune are RARE, VERY RARE (almost every performance on this record is a seamless 1st take). Simply put, there has never been a performer exactly like her.
Writers this prolific, diverse and meaningful do not come along very often; especially writers capable of touching so many with wonderfully warm universal melodies combined with lyrics that communicate love like "Closer than Close"; sexy feelings like "Slow Man"; tell a true story like "I Almost Lost You" or make social comments like "Get the Ghetto" and "December 25th".
Writers of this quality that are at the same time extraordinarily prolific (she composed 125 songs during the recording of this record) are RARE, VERY RARE. It should only take one listen of this record to realize there has never been a composer exactly like her.
Each one of her individual talents alone would be enough to distinguish her as a star; however, when these talents are viewed together they form a beautiful new constellation, the likes of which have never been seen before. In this constellation her remarkable voice beams brightly and as warm as the sun, never to be missed or mistaken for anything else. Sit back and feel the warmth that is
