Never heard of ....!?!?!

I was talking to a co-worker of mine...27 year-old college grad, plays guitar and the drums...and when talking about the drums I mentioned that I was a fan of Sheila E.

"Sheila who?" he replied.

sigh

How can it be? Never heard of Sheila E.?!?!?!?!?

What is this world coming to?

I know it hurts, but Prince's sidemen/women are not as well known as you might like. Even though she is till very much in the music scene, that doesn't mean people really know who she is.

If it wasn't for listening to Prince, I never would have heard of her either.
Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Let's face it, most people haven't got a clue about decent music - blame radio and music TV for that. It's hard to find good music.

Ok, I have another story about that. I play guitar and bass in some bands. The other day I was practicing with one of these bands, where we have an incredibly good percussionist (from Cuba), unknown for public in general, but who has played with James Brown, U2 and more. I was talking to the saxophonist about Prince LV DVD (the saxophonist admires Maceo Parker), and I told him about how good is Prince band.
When I mentioned Sheila E, the percussionist leapt up and asked me: "Have you said "Sheila E"?". And when I responded yes, he told me she is one of the best latin percussionist, one of the 5 best, and he didn't know she plays with Prince, he mentioned another jazz musicians like Ch. Corea, or sth like that, who Sheila has played with.

Conclussion: she's beautiful, she's great.

yup, if you were alive in '84 or know about popular 80s music, you know who she is. You may not know her name, but you know who she is.
Or it could be the other way around..I know quite a few people who are familiar with her name but don't know she's a drummer and/or can't name a song she did

I always get "I LOOOVE Sheila E., Sugar Walls is my favorite."
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
