The Family's Only Live Show: Comments & Questions I finally obtained a DVD copy of The Family's only live concert performance. I had a VHS someone made me for me but it was virtually unwatchable due to poor quality (although I was happy to have a document of their show).
I LOVE The Family... probably the best album ever from Paisley Park. Anyway, for those of you who have seen this show...some comments & questions I'd love to hear your thoughts on:
Anyway, I know this post is a bit obsessive, but I'm just happy to see this show I want to share my thoughts and get others' opinions. I was so dissapointed when they broke up. P.S. I think Susannah is wearing an engagement ring in the video (Prince's?)

DX-7 guitar pedal was most likely the sustain pedal. The DX-7 was used a lot for different sound effects. I think Prince used some on Around the World in a Day and its B-sides -- the same year The Family album was released, 1985. Maybe Paul was keying some effects and not actually playing notes at that point?
Was the other white keyboardist Monte Moir from The Time, maybe? The other players may have been people from Jesse's band. Can't hear much of Jerome's percussion these days either when he tours with The Time. More for show, I think. Gives him something to do inbetween dancing and playing off of Morris. Wow, Susannah wearing an engagement ring? Wonder if it's true. Someone get a snapshot of that. P.S. I -LOVE- the Family also. Thanks for sharing!

I LOVE The Family... probably the best album ever from Paisley Park. [*] I have always LOVED Susannah from the moment I became aware of her. But why is she always mixed so low? You can never hear her! The only time I could really hear her voice distinctly during the show is on The Screams of Passion. I have some Wendy & Lisa live footage and it's the same thing. She harmonizes really well, but even when she is given a line to solo on, it's like her mike is turned down too low. I really want to hear her beautiful voice. From the shows I've seen on video and in person she usually sounds loud and clear but on this show she does seem mixed way too low. [*] Who are the other 2 keyboard players, bass, and guitar players supporting them? One keys player was white and looked very Duran Duran-ish. The guitar/bass players were black and I was trying to see if it was someone we know like Levi or Jesse or someone but the lighting wasn't good enough to tell. The white keyboard player was Jonathan Melvoin. P.S. I think Susannah is wearing an engagement ring in the video (Prince's?) Yes she was wearing a ring at the time, but it came off a few months after that show. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

PhilG you're right .. I need a new DVD player. I have to put the DVD in like 5 times before it will play. I finally did get it to play Mutiny and the SoP video so some of my other questions got answered!
During Mutiny, St. Paul does an organ solo on the DX7 which we can clearly hear. It's just the other songs where we cant' hear what he is playing. In fact, during the extended jam on Mutiny, they go into this whole thing which has a part of Holly Rock (which probably was out about then)... and even do the whole "Mazerati... upside your head!" which Sheila later does on the end of Blue Train...which came out later. The guitar player was featured at the very end so I could see him more clearly... he looked kinda like Miko Weaver... although it was still hard to tell. Still couldn't make out the bass player. There were 2 white keyboard players ...one had a stack of synths...(to "our" right looking at the stage)...with short..Duran Duran type hair. The other guy was to our left with long hair. Which one was Jonathan?? WonderU, thanks for your reply... I don't think I ever saw him before, but I remember the tragedy of his death and what a sad time that was.

I haven't seen the video, so just guessing, but could one of the white keyboardists be Ken Grey from Sheila E.'s band at the time. He played with her during the "Romance 1600" days. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

The other white guy in the band is Paul's brother (I can't recall why I know this). Is it Ricky, the one that produced Mavis' The Voice cd and worked on TMBGITW. Non-Linear Reality

Has anyone else had this problem... or is my DVD player too old? (heck I was afraid it wouldn't even play DVD-R's!) Damn I hope it's just your player. I'm waiting for my copy of this show to arrive! All orgnotes and emails requesting trades or how to acquire bootleggage will be ignored. - The ThreadKiller -

Have'nt come across this dvd yet but what is the quality like?, really tired of blurry videos!, anyway it's a normal and common problem with older dvd players ie 3 years or more, the manufacturers pandered to consumers fear of which recording format dvd-r players would choose later on by producing players which did'nt support mp3, cdr and dvd-r, now you can get players which play everything for as little as £75
