Prince clones reunion

I am thinking of coorniating a Prince clone reunion. Mostly old school but DAngelo can come. Heres the short list. Feel free to add LEGITMATE clones from any Prince era. Prince clone is defined by any rip off of the Prince sound or look.

Ready for the World
Georgio
Micki Free
Barkays (they actually ripped off everybody that was funky)
Xavier
Rick James (check out the video for a song named Glow)
O Bryan
Mazarati (even though they were a Paisley Park act)
Jesse Johnson (I'm his no. 1 fan but the first couple albums was all Prince)

Be sure to send out invitations to these guys too...

***Dreamboy---these guys sing the 1983 slow jam hit "Don't Go",in which the lead singer tries to hit those Princely high notes. The rest of their debut album features alot of trademarks of the Minneapolis sound.

***Sexual Harassment---these guys were shameless Prince clones.Their debut album in 1983 contains the hit "I Need A Freak".Other songs like "If I Gave You A Party (Would You Come?)" and "K-I-S-S-I-N-G" were even more Prince-inspired.Fittingly,their 1985 follow-up single was titled "We Want Prince".

***The System---Did you ever see their 1985 "Pleasure Seekers" video? The lead singer is shown with big hair, dark sunglasses, looking androgynous as he rides a motorcycle through town.Hmmm,I wonder where he got THAT idea from? LOL

***Exotic Storm---Never heard of them? That's because their one and (presumably) only album bombed. They were from Minneapolis and consisted of androgynous dudes with lots of eyeliner, attitude and "cute" nicknames. It's hard to say why they flopped so badly...was it because of their blatant copying of Prince,or because of their awful song lyrics ("bombs will be dropping everywhere...they'd better not harm your silky hair",they sing on the track "I'll Save You From The World").

Thanks for the input. I remember Dreamboy. That is the kind of obscure 80s funk clone band that I am talking about with this list.

You have to admit that Rick's 1985 video "Glow" was a blatant rip-off of the 'Purple Rain' film.Rick is wearing a white, ruffled shirt,he is shown in his dressing room and he gets into a heated argument with the club manager.Sound familiar?

LOL...this video was so absurd! The lead singer was desperately trying to be Prince, and failing miserably.I love The System, but in this video, they were having a temporary identity crisis.

Yes, you're right.

But don't forget that Prince once was SUPPORT to Rick James. So all I say is Rick James wouldn't like being called a Prince clone

Oh,I certainly don't consider Rick to be a "Prince clone".Back in his heyday,Rick was very original and came up with some killer jams.I'm a huge fan of his.But that "Glow" video was extremely Prince-inspired...lol...

and who all did Prince take stuff off of?? I mean whoever is the flavor of the Moment the Industry makes you build your thing off them. yeah I saw the System Video,Rick's Glow,Shalamar 87,Curcumstancial Evidence",the Deele in Image for there Album "Eyes of a Stranger",Full Force with some of there Grooves,Jermaine Jackson's "Dynamite" had the Horn parts in his Songs.the Whispers "this Kind of Lovin" had Elements there as well.but while Prince is a All-Time Great IMHO He has had to follow the same rules as everyone else that came before Him&others that follow him.B.B, King said it best everybody takes.David Bowie was quoted as saying in Rolling Stone that Prince takes more than anybody&that Bowie thought He took more.Prince though had the Right Spin Docotr Label, managers, sound,Attitude,Look&Overall Vibe at pulling it off.right timing as well.

hmm..normally I agree with you, but I'll disagree with you on this one. I HIGHLY doubt Prince got the idea of "purple rain" from something rick came up with. I mean, what did the two do, compare notes?
I would like to know what "other things" P took from Rick (do you mean the idea for V6, cause he got that from andre).

THe Glow video is a rip of Purple Rain in every way - the look, the story line, the white guitar, the ruffled shirt. Great song and I will always love Rick...just love Prince more.

I got a Soultrain Tribute show to Rick James&Don Cornielous(Misspelled)asked Rick what He had planned&Rick said that He was working on a Film&Soundtrack about His Life.something called "A Space Odessy" or something along those lines.I remember back in the summer of 1982 Right On Magazine had a Magazine Dedicated to Him&they talked about His AutoBio Film Coming out as well.Rick also the Girl Group Concept as far back as 1979.the Girls back then were called the Colored Girls.but Rick also got alot of stuff off Parlaiment Funkadelic&the way George Clinton Operated things as did Prince.but anyway Rick was suppose to Debut His Mary Jane Label in the Summer of 85.but Motown pulled back off that.Andre&Prince had that Time Concept thing.

I agree with you,it is highly unlikely that Prince got the idea for 'Purple Rain' from a planned Rick James movie that never materialized.I do recall Rick talking about a biopic in 1982.It was to be called "Spice Of Life".But remember,in early 82,Prince was already planning a concert film called "The Second Coming" with alot of backstage footage. It was never completed, but from this point on,he was determinded to get into making movies.

nobody wants to Beleive Rick James while David Bowie Himself Called Prince the Greatest jacker of them all.that Prince Kool-Aid will truly have you believe anything it wants you to.rick Mentioned His Film back in 81.Mary Jane Records was set to drop in 85.I ain't getting into it.

I forgot to add Rockwell! HOw could I forget him? He was so fucking lame. If anyone ever got over for having a famous parent, it was him. Even managed to get MJ to sing on his only hit. "Somebody's Watching Me" - which was a hit because of MJ's voice on it. HE didnt even sing; he talked.

I have all his albums and I am ashamed to admit it.

Also O Bryan ("I'm Freaky")should be mentioned. He actually had a legit chance at being like Prince. ONly about a 3rd of the talent but could sing, write, and play plus he was as good looking as Prince.
