Urban Rapsody by Rick James

Seriously overlooked comeback from the SPuerfreak that should have gotten more attention. Rick is one of those last true funk pioneers who is still making REAL funk - not that shit that passes for funk these days.

'Urban Rapsody' is a kickass CD!! Alot of solid grooves there. And the slow jam with JoJo "Don't Ever Say You Love Me" is DEEP...it's even better than "Fire and Desire"! Some people think Rick is over but if this CD is any indication,he still has it.

Check it out,it's a kickass CD! A USA Today critic said it was his best album since 'Cold Blooded' and I would have to agree.

Prince opened for Rick James in 1980. RIck James dated Vanity before she went to Prince. Rick has hated on Prince for "stealing" the sexy girl group concept for Vanity 6 before he could do Maty Jane Girls. Look up Prince in any music database online that listed related or similar artists and you will see Rick James listed. Those of us who know what the fuck we are talking about and are old enough to have been there from the start know this most certainly. Read a book and get back to me.

it wasn't a Must Have Disc except from Rick James Die-hards but Compared to His Past Few Albums Prior to it it was worth getting.I'd say Rick's best all the way through since "Cold Blooded".Rick had soem Jams on there.big time Rick James fan&I know He could easily flip the script again as long as He wants it bad enough.

When did Rick get out of prison? My, how time flies.

Urban Rhapsody was an okay album, but I expected better production. It sounded like everything was done from a high-end Casio keyboard.
His subject matter told a lot about how he was feelin' while he was locked up. Sad. Definitely, sad. sad I felt sorry for him by the end of the album. (Not musically, but emotionally.)
But like a lot of artists out there, artists don't detach themselves from their art. And we don't want them to. If they're depressed, it'll come out in the music, and if they're thrilled or angry, it'll come out just the same. When you think about it, that's why we love Prince so much. You feel like you know him and you can relate to his joys and pains. (and yes, I know that last bit sounded corny.)
That's my twocents
"Pedro offers you his protection."

When you're just getting out of jail, its unlikely that you'll have a Prince-sized production budget to make a record with. Rick was kickin' some ass on this record. Another good overlooked record. I agree with LaMont (for once). This record is worthy. Its funky. We need more of Slick Rick and less of the soft pop/r&b that's passing for music on the radio these days.
