Susannah or Vanity??????? Help me out everybody!!! When I read the Prince bio DMSR, I accepted the fact that "When Doves Cry" was actually about his relationship with Susannah and not Vanity, however, after just listening to the soundtrack to Purple Rain it sounds much more like his final days with Vanity. I do remember reading that the song was added to the soundtrack much later , which would support the evidence that it was about his break-up with Vanity!!! Can anyone comment and support either theory with some hard facts or some solid word of mouth!!!

Peace, kellygirl I always thought it was about Vanity too. It sounded alot like the ending of their relationship. People said that he was left broken hearted when Vanity left him. That Book DMSR made Susannah look like some sort of Goddess...Please she was not all that! As for Susan Moonsie I don't really believe it was written for her either. I think the two of them had gotten over their romance long before he wrote "Doves." The line that haunts me is "Maybe your just like my mother- she's never satisfied." That sounds like Vanity...she always wanted more from Prince.

And anyway, A LOT of people make vanity out to be a goddess, (not you) which she was very far from (then, I really like her as a person now). Anyway, "when doves cry" is said to be about Susan Moonsie. A lot of people said that he really loved her and that upsetted vanity. I don't know if all of this is true, it's just what I heard. It could be about either her or vanity, no one really knows for sure except Prince himself. It's all speculation. the only song prince has ever confirmed for a girlfriend was 'adore' (for susannah) and well, the one's about mayte are pretty much a given. I always laugh when we hear that a particualr song was written for a specific girlfriend.Only Prince would know for sure, but my theory is,the song "When Doves Cry" was written solely for the movie. The lyrics are about "The Kid" dealing with Apollonia and the problems with his parents.Likewise,I'm not entirely convinced that "The Beautiful Ones" was written for Susannah (as has been reported). That song was most likely meant for the movie (the scene where he spots Apollonia sitting with Morris).Of course, every artist/songwriter is inspired by what's going on in their life at any given time, but in 1983/84,I'm betting that Prince's main inspiration for writing these songs was the movie itself.
