Associates on Paisley Park

People tend to make bad remarks about the quality of many associate albums that came out on Paisley Park.

To some extent, this is o.k. Good Question + Three o' Clock + TC Ellis were not good back in the days and they are not good today.
Then there are some albums that were good back in the days but lost a lot nowadays (e.g. Dale, Taja Sevelle, Elisa Fiorillo, Carmen, Mavis, Apollonia 6).
And then there are some albums that were good back in the days and are classics nowadays (Sheila E., The Family, Jill Jones).

But what I really want to say: Looking back at 1986-1988, all thouse associate albums were lots of fun. You could buy a new PP production every 2 months or so and this was great.
Sign Of The Times, Jill Jones, Madhouse, Taja Sevelle, Sheila E., Dale Bozzio ... this Paisley empire was really a whole world on its' own. You simply did not need any other music.

Sometimes I miss those side projects nowadays.

I've googled and I've yahooed and somehow I can't seem to find a reliable list of albums out of Paisley Park or NPG.

Come on!There can't be that many.
Ain't there a list somewhere of all releases by these 2 side labels?

Paisley Park Records started out with alot of promise. In the beginning, the label boasted a roster consisting of Mazarati,The Family and Sheila E.Those artists released very good albums. But,as the 80s progressed,Prince began signing questionable acts with very little real talent.Taja Sevelle was cute, but it's a stretch to call her a "singer".Good Question looked cool in their video, but they had "one-hit wonder" written all over them.Dale Bozzio had nice, big hair but how many people actually bought her album?

Things didn't get much better in the 90s either.TC Ellis? No thank you.Carmen Elektra? Nice smile, but are you really gonna drive down the street blasting "Good Judy Girlfriend" in your car? Ingrid Chavez? Interesting poetry, but what exactly is an "Elephant Box"?? It's frustrating to hear about all the truly talented acts that Prince COULD have signed...

***Tony! Toni! Tone!---In 1987,Prince was planning to sign these guys after being introduced to them by Sheila E.But according to them,"he (Prince) kept frontin",so they signed elsewhere and went on to become one of the top R&B bands of the late 80s/early 90s.

***Me'Shell Ndogecello---I'm sure I spelled her last name wrong...lol...but in 1992,her demo tape made it onto Prince's desk and he was interested in signing her.But somehow she wound up signing with rival Madonna's Maverick label instead.

***Bonnie Raitt---Prince signed her in late 1986 and recorded several tracks with her. But,as always,Prince was too focused on other projects and the Raitt album was never completed.A few years later, she signed elsewhere and made a stunning comeback with the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning 'Nick Of Time' album.

Considering how busy Prince was with his OWN career,it probably would have been a good idea for him to have hired an *EXPERIENCED* full-time label president.Madonna hired the skilled Guy Oseary to handle these duties at her label, and he is largely responsible for bringing important artists like Alanis Morrissette to her label.Prince,on the other hand, "promoted" his ex-bodyguard Gilbert Davison to become the Paisley Park Records president.

I'm surprised everybody's so far neglected to mention the rather excellent album by Mavis Staples 'Time Waits For No One', also on the Paisley Park label.

What about Eric Leeds and Mazarati??? THey are 2 of the best Paisley Park acts ever. Eric's debut Times Squared was up there with Madhouse for good funky jazz. Mazarati has to be up there with the Family and Jill Jones asthe best PP releases ever.

I agree...that was an EXCELLENT album.

Prince had the potential to make Paisley Park a label to be reckoned with...what a shame it never really took off.
