Shelia E: Sex Cymbal

I finally got this from Amazon. In the liner notes, she thanks many people, including Prince, Cat, etc. She also thanks the Lovesexy band. That mention got me thinking: Did the Lovesexy band play on any of the tracks?

Does Shelia still record @ Paisely Park?

I recently did some research into Prince related albums and as far as whats been published goes Prince had no involvement. I can't speak for the rest of the band. If you want to know what albums Prince was involved in (other than his own) there is a page on my site. Here's the link.

PS There is also a funky sample of '6' if you access the page. I think that's pretty cool.

NO. Sex Cymbal was on the Warner Bros. label (if you'll notice) and her subsequent 2 Jazz albums were on Concord Records.

However, now that Sheila and Prince have made peace and are jamming together again...who knows what'll happen for her next album.

I was just listening to this CD the other day, and I was wondering if any of those songs were about Prince. The lyrics sound like some of them could be about him. Just a thought.

Are you referring to the song "Loverboy"?

"loverboy...don't you come running back to me,with an ego to feed...loverboy,the time has come,I must break free"

This was the first boring album by Sheila - but unfortunately not the last.

No, Sex Cymbal was the last good album from Sheila although I haven't listened to it for years.
The intro was cool because it drew a connection to the early Prince times ("There's a a rumour about the Glamarous Life, I think I told you once but now I'm telling you twice") ...

I ordered "Writes Of Passage" from the U.S. a few years ago (I live in Europe). It was expensive, I had to pay import taxes on it, I listened to it, I hated it & put it on the shelf where it's still in the process of getting completely covered by spider webs.

Let's face it. Sheila belongs more to Prince than any other of his associates. Wendy & Lisa can do on their own but Sheila without Prince ... not for me.
This sounds like disrespect but this is what I'm thinking.

Funkystuff, you cannot be a true fan of Sheila's if you feel this way.She does not need Prince to help her out,she is doing quite fine by herself. She has grown and changed through the years and I believe she is right where she wants to be.

I've never claimed to be a true fan of Sheila E. !

But you're right. If she has found her place, it's o.k. with me. The things she has done during the previous 10 years simply does not correspond to my musical taste.

Sex Cymbal was the BEST album that Sheila E made, mostly because it was her most personal recording to date. She is first and foremost a LATIN musician, and in the spirit of these roots, (and without Prince calling the shots), she created a funky, jazzy "Latin Pop" album almost a DECADE before Ricky Martin and Shakira burst on the scene!!!

"Droppin' Like Flies", "What'cha Gonna Do", and "Private Party" are three tracks that could've gotten decent airplay had this album been released 2 years ago.

...now, about this album being b-o-r-i-n-g...CrystalVault, you're going to have to explain yourself.

Yeah, I was referring to "Loverboy", and also "Whatcha Gonna Do" and "Cry Baby". Listen to them, they could be written about Prince.

But I remember thinking, when I saw SOTT video, that she looked a little skeletal. Boney legs. No? But a very attractive woman, boney legs aside.

It's a fun little album, but probably her worst - I absolutely adore Private Party, and Droppin' Like Flies and the title track are pretty good.

Writes of Passage and Heaven are both great CDs. smile
