• For the first time all three of Jesse Johnson’s albums available on one package.

• Featuring ‘Jesse Johnson’s Revue’, ‘Shockadelica’ and ‘Every Shade Of Love’.

• Plus five Bonus Tracks.

Jesse Johnson had appeared as a member of the group The Time in Prince’s movie Purple Rain, which quickly exploded into an international blockbuster and spawned a multi- platinum-selling soundtrack album loaded with hit singles. But a few weeks later, Jesse Johnson quit The Time, following singer Morris Day and drummer Jellybean Johnson (no relation) through the exit door.

Johnson’s aspiration to sign a solo record deal was finally realised in 1984 when he inked a contract with A&M Records. Before he cut tracks for his debut album, he wrote and produced a couple of funky synth-pop songs for Janet Jackson’s second album, ‘Dream Street’. Later in 84, he began work writing and producing ‘Jesse Johnson’s Revue’, the self- titled album of a six-piece band Johnson had assembled and led; they included former Time members Mark Cadenas (keys) and Gerry Hubbard (bass), alongside guitarist Michael Baker, keyboardist Tim Bradley, and drummer Bobby Vandell.

The album included three Top Ten R&B singles, ‘Be Your Man’, ‘Can You Help Me’ and ‘I Want My Girl’.

The follow up album ‘Shockadelica’ included the collaboration with Sly Stone, ‘Craazay’ which peaked at number two in the U.S. R&B chart, you will find the extended version included in the bonus tracks.

The final album ‘Every Shade Of Love’ features another top five R&B chart smash, ‘Love Struck’ and again the bonus tracks feature the Dance Mix of this fantastic cut.

The package includes in depth sleeve notes by journalist Charles Waring who contributes to MOJO, Record Collector and uDiscovermusic.com.

It’s odd that “Free World” isn’t included here, since it was a very popular B-side track.

‘Shocksdelica’ is my favorite Jess Johnson album.I enjoy it all the way through.

I’m assuming these bonus tracks were chosen because, unlike “Free World”, these were not previously released on the Ultimate Collection.

Thanks for the heads up SoulAlive, nice. Not a bad price for this CD set, just pre-ordered it from the Cherry Red site, due out, funnily enough, on 7th June 2024.

https://www.cherryred.co....f-love-2cd

By the way, from the website, “Robinsongs is the label that specialises in releasing some of the best Jazz, Funk & Soul titles ever recorded, the big bonus with Robinsongs releases is you usually get more than one album. Robinsongs specialise in two on one’s and three on two’s plus Best Of CD’s.”
There may or may not be something coming!

Cherry Red is a great label for reissues.I always check to see what they are releasing smile if the Prince estate is not interested in releasing the protege albums (Mazarati,Apollonia 6,etc),I wish they would allow Cherry Red/Robinsongs to put this stuff out.

Minneapolis guitarist Jesse Johnson, best known as a member of The Time, will be celebrated by Cherry Red's Robinsongs imprint with a 2CD set that combines three of his solo albums for the A&M label and an assortment of extras.

The simply titled Jesse Johnson Revue / Shockadelica / Every Shade of Love + Bonus Tracks brings together Johnson's three post-Time solo efforts issued between 1985 and 1988, featuring the Billboard Hot 100 hits "Be Your Man," "I Want My Girl," "Crazay" (featuring funk legend Sly Stone) and "Love Struck." In addition to the three remastered albums, the three dance mixes and two non-LP tracks (including Johnson and Stephanie Spruill's contribution to the soundtrack of 1985's The Breakfast Club) will feature on the set. Writer Charles Waring (MOJO, Record Collector, uDiscover Music) has contributed liner notes for the package.

I have Cherry Red's reissue of Andre Cymone's AC and it's great. Since Shockadelica is the only one of these that I have a CD of (got em all on vinyl) I'll be buying this.

Thanks for the heads up, SoulAlive!

I vaguely remember my cousin playing Jesse Johnson stuff before and I remember liking Love Struck in particular. I'm not too familiar with the rest of this stuff though so this seems like a perfect release for me. Kind of weird that they're releasing 3 albums across 2 discs though. Like, did they put 2 albums on a single disc with the remaining disc having 1 album on it? Or did they split one of the albums across 2 discs?

Nevermind. I'm an idiot. My question is answered in the first bloody post lol

I don't want a remaster, I want a re-release. It's out of print and pricey. wink

Screw it. Found a decent deal through discogs and ordered a copy. $24.76 with tax/shipping for a used copy. Not a bad price, I've seen it usually going for $35 or more, often around $50.
