I never thought she was a bad drummer. She's just uninteresting to watch. She seemed even more bland when backing an enigmatic artist like Prince.

Interesting to find out she was using practice tapes from Blackwell era to learn songs. She's got a good meter (I don't know if she always had that) and I can see why Prince liked her, but you can also hear some of the trainwreck shows would wander into sometimes (it wasn't just adding a snare), and I think it's pretty clear she's technically playing the funk, but there isn't much funk there, and not a lot of feeling.

I'm tempted to say he was just chasing Bobby Z. looking for drums that didn't have a lot of personality but could mimic him for hours but we've heard live tapes that show personality and Bland, and Cora, had it and Blackwell had it but he'd still play like a session player a lot of the time.
