Album: Robin Power And Th...ince Vault

Robin Power and the Uptown Dames---the planned album that was never released

(from PrinceVault)

This entry details a planned album by Robin Power, recorded between Late 1989 and Early 1991. Only a handful of songs are known to have been recorded for the project before being abandoned when Robin Power introduced Carmen Electra to Prince and he decided to work on a rap album with her instead.

It is assumed that Robin Power’s album would have been released on Paisley Park Records and that Prince would not have written all of the songs as in 1990 he made Power recruit a band of female musicians who contributed to the songwriting. The band was named “The Uptown Dames” and the album would have been released under the Robin Power & The Uptown Dames moniker. They were supposed to be the opening-act for Prince on a future tour and a regular live band at his Glam Slam Club.

The earliest track known to have been recorded with Robin Power is Undercover Lover in late 1989. The song was written by Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr. and was broadcast during The New Power Generation Radio Show in December 1989. Number 1 was recorded in 1990 and was included in the Graffiti Bridge movie (but not its soundtrack) in which Robin Power acted. A Positive Place was recorded for a configuration of the New Power Generation maxi-single, but was removed from the final release. It is not known if this song was considered for Power’s album.

When The Uptown Dames were recruited in Late 1990, their keyboardist and musical director Liza Figueroa was asked to write new music for The Teacher, a rap Prince wrote for Power that they were rehearsing. Figueroa also wrote the music for "Woman’s Touch" (the lyrics were written by a teenager named Kou). Other songs recorded during that time were "There’s No Time To Spare", "Game Boys", "Power Beat", "It’s Been A Long Time" and "Funky Gravy" (authors unknown).

When Prince met Carmen Electra and started to work with her in March 1991, he seemingly quickly lost interest in the Robin Power & The Uptown Dames project. Prince gave her a track previously recorded with Robin Power called Robin On Top and renamed it Carmen On Top. Electra was the opening-act for Prince and the New Power Generation (on selected dates) during the Diamonds And Pearls Tour the following year and released her eponymous album in 1993. Except for the inclusion of Number 1 in the Graffiti Bridge movie, all of the songs recorded for the Robin Power & The Uptown Dames album remain unreleased.

The album was believed to include:

I have no idea who she is. But she sounds like a fucking lunatic though...

She was the girl with Morris in Graffiti Bridge. But she doesn't care what you think about her - enough that she posts it repeatedly in orgNotes about a thread from April, and in a new thread on prince.org. Just so you know how much she doesn't care what you or I think about her. Again.

Oh lord, Robin's back again?

I remember she posted maybe a year or so ago, but I hadn't seen her here in literaally a decade of Sundays, after she that epic thread with Rhondab, Crystal666, Soul Alive, Blaqknight and a gaggle of Org OGs.

Jesus. Why is it always the same people typing manic shit like that? lol Did Prince put something in their drinks or what?

She had the nerve to OrgNote me the other day from an old ass thread from what...April(?), talking shit. I never read it. (No sober person could.) She can't form a sentence to save her life, her grammar is shit, and she's bonkers with "Prince chose me." Yeah, but where are you now, baby girl? Who even knows you outside of the few hundred Prince fans on here? Cuz the public sure ain't re-watching the shitshow of Graffiti Bridge and asking, "who's that girl?" She was relevant like what... a couple minutes? Prince also chose Susan, Gayle, Lisa, Wendy, Boni, Cassandra, Shelby, Candy, Elisa, Liv, Judith, Sheila, Apollonia, Jill, Susannah, Mayte, Manuela, and gaggle of others. But - we know who they are.

By the way, anyone who does have talent or a gift from God doesn't have to brag about it or bite back. They're not that fragile. They use their gift for good, they see a greater purpose. They don't sit around on prince.org trying to diss others. So that already speaks volumes about who she isn't.

She doesn't give a fuck what others say? Why you OrgNoting everyone, then posting the same cut'n'paste shit to a thread?! ATTENTION DEPRIVED. She gives a fuck, big time. But thanks for the rent-free space in your head, girl. It's roomy in here, for all of us. lol

Number One... not so much.

PS: I kinda low-key love that she's so easily triggered. It's like an ant under a magnifying glass in the sun.
