The problem with Elisa.

Hearing a 40-something white woman sing "fill up YO pockets" and "home of the slaaaaave" is every bit as cringe-inducing as hearing her chant "takin' back dis ship!" about as convincingly as my mom yelling at the cat to stay out of her flowerbed.

It's not her fault. She's doing the job she was paid to do. But hearing her "get black" just makes me think of Karens at Karaoke.

Until I find the righteous one...

lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Elisa has a fantastic voice. She's not the only caucasian woman who can sing funk. There are many in Gospel Choirs around the world, and a few others that come to mind are Graham Central Station's keyboardist who also sings, and Teena Marie.

she came into the Prince camp in 1990

Jill Jones is lip syncing to Elisa in the movie Graffiti Bridge

Fiorillo appears on Partyman (The Purple Party Mix), she also contributed as backing vocalist on Daddy Pop and Walk Don’t Walk.

She met Prince while working at Paisley Park on her second album with David Z.. Prince asked her to sing on Partyman (The Purple Party Mix) and on several The Time songs on the band’s reunion album from 1990 Pandemonium and on Graffiti Bridge.

In 1990 she released her second album I Am, largely written and produced by Prince. The album scored a Top 30 hit in the U.S. and Top 20 in Australia with On The Way Up.

After spending two decade focusing on her own career, Elisa returned to Prince’s camp in 2009 and toured with him as back up singer in The NPG ensemble.

What does Karen Carpenter have to do with the price of pork?

You'd have had to have eaten at the 3121 jazz cafe to be able to answer that so unfortunately I don't have a proper answer for you. The reason I didn't eat there was staying up for 24 hours prior to the show I went to and a crazy love bizarre episode in the middle of the fun. Plus there was gambling.

lol Some of the comments here! Just as Vanity passed on being named renamed Vagina, Elisa should have passed on singing along with some of these lyrics. In 2009 or so people weren’t being accused of appropriation like they are now.

Nothing wrong with Eilsa Dease. If she wants to sing something, she should sing it and stand by those lyrics.

cool
