Jill Jones' Slept On Debut

As a Prince fan since the beginning of his career, I've always been a fan of his productions and so-called protégés. Still, from the Paisley Park label years, the Jill Jones album is my favorite. I don't understand why neither Warner Brothers, the critics and the general public didn't embrace it more. A few years back I wrote about Jill's brilliant disc for Soulhead.com and loved revisiting that brilliant disc. https://www.soulhead.com/...a-gonzales

Simple, i think..

The reason was Prince and his fast flowing ideas and bizarre changes imho.

He had barely patiences, and was already on the next project before one came out.

And, ask Alan Leeds, who was the fisrt in charge of that label.

I remember him talking about that in some podcast.

Maybe here :

Agree! Except I really liked "The Time" original LP equally.

One of the strongest protegé projects he ever did, even the release of Baby You're a Trip on Originals didn't seem to lead to any critics realizing this, the most I saw was a few dismissive comments about the Jill Jones version.

It is a great set of songs.

My favorite protege albums are What Time Is It? the Glamorous Life, the Family and Madhouse 16 those 4 are solid 7's start to finish.

I think where Jill's debute needed the extra push was being visibily associated with Prince. She wanted to go the "She wants to lead the glamorous lifeShe don't need a man's touch" route

If she opened for the SOTT tour did some shows with Madhouse, Madhouse/Prince backing her etc the album would have gotten the boost it needed. The scene was just too conjestive to try it on her own first go round. Maybe even wearing the heart shaped bracelett he gave her to wear

Agree. I feel like Jill was the professional casualty of prince's career. Which is strange as I feel like for most of us, she's a or the favourite.

Two albums worth of music for an 83 84 or 85/86 release

I wonder if what happened in why Prince pulled her extra storyline from PR is why he didn't push to release her sooner. I remember hear/reading something from her a long time ago, saying she didn't want to just be another "Prince girl" like the others

Baby You're A Trip is one of my favourite tracks by anyone, ever.

I remember there was a discussion here about the album a few years back, and some people were saying(I think) that it sounded dated by the time it was released - and it should have been released a couple of years earlier. I never really got that, as I don't think of mid-80s Prince as paying much attention to chart production sounds, so Jill's album just sounded like a great (as in, the best) Prince protege album to me.
