Brownmark interview in Forbes magazine https://www.forbes.com/si...17572f4dc5 - I find parts of it a bit strange. So did they really shoot the Raspberry Beret video in Europe or is he getting it mixed up with the America video? According to Princevault the Raspberry Beret video was shot in Los Angeles. The part about people in the audience having sex sounds a bit exaggerated. Were the Controversy and 1999 concerts really like that?

I wish he'd just shut the F up about Kiss. He didn't produce the song period. How come he never pulled another song like that again if he's capable of it?

In my original post I commented on that as well, but then edited that part out because I didn´t want to give the impression that I´m against Brownmark, because I´m not...I really like his bass sound a lot. But it seems that he can´t talk about Prince without mentioning Kiss and how he was robbed of royalties. I wonder how David Z feels about this. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yeah, right ? I love(d) the Revolution but Prince created amazing music before AND after the Revolution. I´d love to see the Revolution included in the Hall of Fame, too, but gimme a break, it´s not like Prince is in the RRHOF because of them. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I am hesitant to get into this as it it stirs up some orgers, but I will say this, Mark Brown seems to me to be one of the more vocal complainants but there were a number of Prince band members who have voiced similar concerns over the years, ie., Jam, Andre, Barbarella etc. Another example is Levi Seacer. He sued for co-writing credits in 1988 for 'Sexy MF' & 'My Name is Prince'. Prince ran tape through all band practice sessions and it is my guess that there was some 'borrowing' going on in varying degrees, some of which should have been credited to the originators.
I know some orgers will likely say that these people were in Prince's band and don't have individual rights, etc. I am having a relaxing day so this is all I will say... [Edited 2/20/21 9:13am]

But Mark is demanding credits he doesn't deserve. Kiss is one of the best Songs Prince ever produced, and he wants these credits for that production. If he's that talented, then why wasn't he bigger AFTER Prince? I think that's a legitimate question. He made music after the purple one, but he never produced a banger like Kiss again? That's why I don't buy it.
As for the others you've mentioned here, their claims might be legit. But Mark is just delusional.

My comment has to do primarily w/a pattern I noticed. Prince was enough of a super-star to be fair and generous w/proper credits. This trait was disppointing to me. IMO, he kept his band members in the dark about which song/album he was working on. I read too many times band members saying, "I remember that riff or groove" (That they contributed). "I did not know that's what we were working on" Prince's bands, (most of them), contributed heavily to his success over the years...much of his most notable work was birthed in those jamming sessions.

And I understand their conplains if it's true. But this thread is about Mark and his delusions. Wasn't he also the guy who said that the death of Ahmir was god's way to make prince pay for the sins in his life? I think I read this once somewhere. I just don't have any sort of respect for Mark. He always comes out to present Prince like a bitch but it always backfires at him. That should make him stop and think for a minute.

I forgot to mention Wendy,Lisa, Jesse in the list of complainants. I know that not every riff or groove qualifies for credit, but I get the real sense that many of these musicians contributed quite a bit that was not properly acknowledged.

I don't remember Mark saying that about Amiir but he could have. I am asking that we put down our Prince 'standom' and try to look at the number of musicians in Prince's world who had issues that were similar to Mark's. It is not my intent to bad-mouth Prince but I think we tend to give him a pass in some of his behaviors and I would like to strive for the most objective viewpoint. I think this is important as one day, a biographer might look @ some of these comments for accuracy. I think Prince was a wunderkind but the behavior in question hurt and confused some the aforementioned.

Like I said, I agree with you on the rest of them. I'm in no way a Prince ass kisser. Absolutely not, I love the man for what he was, but I also know he could be an asshole sometimes. But Mark is just claiming stuff he can't really back up.

I hear you and agree it was inappropriate of Mark.
To be honest, I have struggled mightily w/some of Prince's unfairness w/others to the point where I questioned whether I could be a fan. I even talked to my daughter about it as she is in the Art business and is familiar w/artists and she said that many artists are not agreeable or 'nice' and there is ego involved. It is a trait that propels them forward. When I listen to Mark, who may or may not be right (I just don't know),I inadvertently hear the voices of other musicians Prince was not fair with. Just imagine trying to stand up to Prince if you felt unfairly treated; first of all you already signed an NDA, then you open yourself up to an unsettling Cease & Desist letter, then you face a guy w/deep pockets and a bunch of lawyers. Sandra St. Victor talked about it as well. These people had to wait for his death to talk freely, IMO, which is why I feel less strongly about what they say.

Funny how many people seemed to quit Prince's early bands for religious reasons.

Out of all the people in this band that annoy me when they talk post his death. Brownmark has got to be #1. First he said he quit cause of money and underappreciation. now it's religious reasons? make up your mind. Kiss? Yes Prince gave them a scratch demo with just vocals and guitar. Fine. David Z did more on the song than Mark. What did he contribute? Bass? you mean the instrument that Prince took out? the released version doesn't sound anything like the mazarati version outside of their background vocals. The drums are different if you clean your ears and there's no bass except from the kick drum. As far as him saying The Revolution should've been inducted into the RRHOF, this man has lost his motherfucking mind lol. Wendy and Lisa wouldn't even say that stupid shit. You don't get inducted into the hall of fame for 3 albums out of what...40? Come on man. Not even the Revolution fan boys can say this interview isn't laughable.

A lot of freaky shit was going on at concerts back then i'm sure. Literally having sex and him being able to see it is extremely questionable.

stealing a groove vs taking a line or something from a rehearsal or a soundcheck and making a fully fleshed song out of it are 2 different things lol

ironically his biggest hit after he left the camp was...a prince song LMAO

I know, I think there were varying degrees of borrowing. Quite a few have complained so, though I don't know, I tend to believe them.

I was at a Controversy gig in Virginia - right in front of the stage a few feet from Prince and Dez. I did not see anything like that [Edited 2/25/21 21:48pm] [Edited 2/25/21 21:48pm]

I always ask the same question when these old Prince associates lay claim to his hits. NONE of them EVER made anything close to being as great as a Prince hit like Kiss yet they want us to believe that they were mostly responsible. Wendy used to hint around on Purple Rain like they had somethig to do with it. I was about to buy Mark's book but if it is shit like this, I think I will pass.

Did you mean "didn´t see anything" or "did see something" ? Just asking. I´m not saying that Mark is a liar but I doubt that people were literally having intercourse during concerts. So cool that you got to see a Controvery concert. Did you go to any 1999 and Purple Rain tour concerts as well? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness!
