Wendy and Lisa's stuff is top notch. Trash??? A little harsh, no? Some of their melodies are absolutely gorgeous. I get you are not a fan, but gotta respect their talent. I am still discovering more interesting tidits on White Flags.

The one album I am luke warm on is Fruit at the Bottom, as I felt they were trying too hard to sound like Prince. Still good stuff tho. Eroica is their absolute best imo.

Eroica and Girl Bros, are my two favs...although, I adore all of their albums, to be honest. lol

Owen Husney was interviewed by Uptown magazine and he said that this was the effect Prince had on people: because he, Prince, did everything himself, people like André and Jesse and Morris started to believe that they could do it too: play all the instruments, write everything, produce yourself. Problem was: just because it worked for Prince, didn't mean it was going to work for everyone.

Owen makes a very good point.Brownmark and Andre are good writers and producers, but do they have the stage presence, charisma and vocal talent to be successful solo artists?

I'm not quite sure where Sheila E fits because her 80's material was before she joined the band.

Most of the songs I enjoyed from her were Prince productions/written.

[Edited 4/18/21 13:43pm]

Sheila Escovedo never had solo albums before Prince. Sheila E was a Prince protege whose music was done by Prince and fleshed out mostly with this band. the Sheila E(1986) had non Prince input, but you can almost tell the difference between the ones Prince did and the ones Sheila E did.

Sex Cymbal Heaven etc the further she got away from her 'time' with Prince the less it came off as good.

Lol....I'll say it slower, Sheila E's 1980's albums were before she joined Prince's band.

Protege means she was NOT in the band.

Wendy & Lisa's music was trash...some of BrownMark's music is good, he just cant sing...but yeah, Andre' Cymone is the only one with good solo lp's, and his production work with Jody Watley was REALLY good ("Still A Thrill" especially)...

Wendy & Lisa'a music was and is a delight. Isn't it great how one single man can attract people with such diverse tastes! Andre Cymone's music is terrific too. (I do wish his work with Adam Ant would get a proper re-release/release online).

Yes the first and third Wendy & Lisa albums are solid. RJOnion...you seem like a real schmuck.

Because she was trying to take a bite of the sound at the time. Like Bobby's album, Sex Cymbal sounds totally dated. It sounds exactly like the time it was recorded and released - the early 90s with a house & dance aesthetic. It contains weak songs, hollow production, and undeveloped ideas. The title track almost seems like a diss toward Prince... or probably the image he created of/for her. The rapping on it - OMG the horrid rapping. She was feeling herself a bit too much after that "The Table and the Chair" moment in IGBABN.

Her cover of "Lady Marmalade" is a goddamn crime against music. If I were Patti, Sarah, or Nona, I'd have been p-i-s-s-e-d.

I don't remember anything else from the record. It's forgettable, at best.

And the fact that she played part of "The Glamorous Life" at the beginning either or a nose flip to Prince, or just really reeks of a lame joke. She apparently thought it was hysterical by her fake laugh. Wow, you really got us there, Sheila.

Wendy & Lisa's music sounds like trash to me, and anyone ive tried to play it for. And your petty and childish yiddish name calling doesnt change my mind, or make it sound any better to any of us. It just exposes your own ignorance and intolerance for the fact that people have different opinions than you do. Its probably way too late, but try to grow up

I agree,’Sex Cymbal’ is a disappointing album.I tried really hard to like it,but there are just too many mediocre songs. The production throughout is boring and uninspired.I do like “Cry Baby”,which is probably the most Prince-like track on the album.

I think Owen Husney was his manager in the mid-90s when he did those albums.

like i said, everyone doesnt like what you like..and its obvious in this thread that im not the only one who doesnt like their stuff... it has nothing to do with maturity... but you trying to force someone to like what you like, or disrespecting them, or telling them to "broden your mind" (whatever 'broden'is supposed to be), is the behavior of a 12 year old...just like the use of 7 laughing emojis in one reply...and using the word "prospective", instead of perspective...grow up and smarten up before you cross me, im not the one you wanna battle with

Im expounding on what you said in your post. Not knowing where to put her post albums before joinging the band in 1987.

I'm saying, as you were, that her 1980s albums cannot be judged the same as her post Prince albums. That even on her 3rd album most of the songs she did without Prince input sounded like mainstream 80s music. Hon E Man was the only one I that feels like a Prince protege Sheila E

Wendy & Lisa's music sounds good to me, you can hear how they aren't as natural as Prince at songwriting, and its a little more consciously thought out, but they had their own thing going on as well. Not better or worse, just a different vibe. I often wonder how their songs would have sounded if Prince had gotten involved.

I’ve noticed that, after the mid-80s or so,most of those female Prince protégés had a hard time getting airplay and success.Taja Sevelle,Jill Jones,Ingrid Chavez,Carmen Elektra, even Sheila E.It’s as if radio became bored with playing music from Prince’s women. It was kinda unfair.

-

Well, the reason why ''radio became bored playing music from Prince's women'' (as you put it)

has everything to do with the lower than mediocre quality of most of the songs he delivered to these (known and unknown) artists, like ;

(Sheila E, Jill Jones had the good songs and lots of airplay, but,) Carmen, Ingrid, Taja, Elisa F., Deborah Allen, Dale, Martika, Paula A., Nona Hendrix,

Mica, Celine Dion, Lois Lane, Monie L., Jevetta Steele, Kahoru Kohiruimaki, Rosie G., Mayte, Millenia, Nikka, Ronda, Bria, etc...

... they all had to deal with these uninspiring throwaway song Prince grabbed from the bin in the vault,

which left them somehow immediatly forgotten (imho).

There's just nothing unfair about it.

Even the best artists can't turn a poor quality song into a high-end hit.

-

But in 1988-'89, for some reason, he had strong songs given to big stars like Chaka Khan, Madonna (co-wrote), Mavis Staples, Patti Labelle, and later on to Kate Bush (co-wrote).

And not even theses songs were heavily played on the radio.

Don't forget that radio right then, was in heavy transition, due to the upcomming CD industry combined with the portable CD player/discman (that was hugely popular).

Radio got split into million of other radio stations; niche stations.

Hits were newly and readymade by the industry, performed by fabricated or assembled boys and girl bands with no artistry or musical knowledge at all.
