add Chaka Khan too
He did none of that with any of those above. Sheena Easton he could have...

But Prince pulled her under his wing and remade him. She was wearing Prince and band outfits, NPG was backing her. He produced her album and songs outside of the album, she opened for him, she was in his band etc. Andy Allo was a protege

Yes, she was a Jesse Johnson protege
she was pulled into Prince's camp but nothing further came of it. It would have been interesting though

Yes she had a career before Prince but when Prince pulled her into his camp in 1984, took off the football jersey as he and Jill giggled. Sheila E became a Prince protege and band member from 1984-1989. She was made to look like a version of Prince, her band members were directed by Prince, their look was influenced by Prince, the sound was created by Prince. Her whole career after has been influenced heavily by Prince(1984-1989)
Sheila E was a Prince protege

She was already an established musican and actress before him. She made albums and her acting career took off after him. A protege is someone he discovered. He did not discover her. I would compare Andy to Elisa. As Prince fans, we know them best for their time with Prince, but they both have fanbases and success before and after Prince and much of that success has been unrelelated to their connection with Prince.

So how about musicians (e.g. some members of the Time) who came up with Prince in the same local music scene? IMO, it would be odd to say Prince discovered them. I mean, they kinda discovered each other, didn't they?

I don't think that a protege has to be somone discovered without any previous history
So FlyteTyme was performing locally so are they not Prince proteges?
The basic defininition is
pro·té·gé
/ˈprōdəˌZHā,ˌprōdəˈZHā/
noun

Because it's not about 'discovering' someone. Morris Day (and Jesse) are Prince incarnations visually. The Time was directed styled covered colored by Prince pulling things from the members . Eric Leeds was a musician before Prince, but Madhouse is a Prince protege group

It's interesting to consider the definition. It seems that it could easily allow for people to be proteges of one another. That seems possible because while there are undoubtedly general correlations with age/experience/influence, they are three separate things. [Edited 12/22/20 9:23am]

As far as "careers before Prince," it's hard to imagine any fan being unaware of Larry Graham's earlier work. [Edited 12/22/20 10:01am]

Yes, but Prince took to Larry Graham when Sly rejected him. Sly was the real influencer for Prince.
Prince produced Larry and Chaka Khan, they are definately not proteges

What do you mean by 'what about Andre'? . It depends on the artist. Some artists have more visual energy along with the music. Some not so much. Some is visual noise others is art.
Yes the individual brought sounds(usually not so mainstream) with them. Unique ways of playing etc instruments etc Prince in the 80s loved 'mistakes' But a Prince protege (and some others like Rick James -Tina Marie, Mary Jane Girls and Eddie Murphy) reflected Prince and a side of Prince and themselves through Prince. The look, the sound, the style, the movements
When you listen to Sheila E(1986 album) you can tell overall the Prince produced/incluenced tracks from the non-Prince produced tracks

I know all that. But she had a successful career before all that (read the title of this thread) and an additional successful career after she stopped being a "protege/side act". mostly as a session musician and musical director for various non-Prince related acts. She even did a few albums that were nothing like Prince (I didn't like them as much to b honest).
So she was a protege for a while but she ALSO had a successful career of her own BEFORE AND AFTER that had nothing to do with her Prince association.

Sheila E was a tomboy, Prince turned up her style. Her poses with the bands are like in the 80s. The sounds were not always, she always returned to her family latin-jazz style. But she heavily did her Prince stuff. And in 2011 it really turned up when she reunited with Eddie M and started doing Sheila E (And) Prince songs
I mean none of this takes away from Sheila E at all. But she was a protege who had a career before Prince

Yes as a sessions musician. Not as a frontman. It wasn't until Prince put her as his protege, and directed her that she stepped out front. Otherwise she would have gone back to being a sessions/family musician.
Read the title of this thread. It is NOT "acts that fans think are proteges but actually were frontmen".

Protégés to me would be no released music no tv time no singing contests etc....So Judith and Andy I would not call protégés at all, Andy had music out and Judith was already a background singer and on the voice. Regardless if we knew them at all he basically produced or had them in the band as was Andy and even though Prince produced work by them influenced them they were basically molded by him musically his way but then went in their own directions. are we actually debating that Sheila E was not a Prince protege?
Before 1984 she was Sheila Escovedo, Prince changed it to Sheila E. Prince dressed her, styled her, directed her etc If Sheila E was not a protege she would not have been Sheila E the Glamorous Life Romance 1600 Sheila E.

Acts some Prince fans THINK are "proteges" (We KNOW Sheila E was a protege) why is this turning into an issue? Maybe the wording is wrong? Or maybe the OP is talking about 'non Prince proteges' that had careers before Prince. But Sheila E WAS a Prince protege(who happened to have had a career before Prince)
Acts some Prince fans think are "proteges" but had careers before Prince
The fact is that social media pages who aren't familiar with Prince-dom, tend to 1. Cast females as proteges and ignore males 2. tend to focus on anyone who Prince wrote a song for. Even Ingrid was not a protege.

All 3 of the following are true:
1. Sheila had a successful career before Prince. 2. Sheila was a Prince protege for a time which catapulted her to the public eye/world fame 3. Sheila had a successful carrer after being a Prince protege (and still does).

no one ever doubted that. U should know how much I respect Sheila E . Eric Leeds had a similar career as Sheila's before Prince, he still was a protege via the Family and Madhouse

Who thinks Candy is a Prince protege? Liv Warfield was out there prior to Prince but I dont think anyone believs she was a protege either.

I think pretty much everyone beyond those around his first few years, with a handful of exceptions, had some sort of career prior to their association with Prince. Not being well known doesn't exclude someone from making a fair living doing what they do. Time keeps on slipping into the future...
