Bill Carrothers, former Family member

Just wanted to bring this fellow to the Org's attention. He's from Mpls and was a member of the short-lived live iteration of The Family, but got completely forgotten by the fans because he didn't stay long and isn't featured on any studio track related to Prince.

.

Yet, he went on to pursue a successful and quite prolific career as a solo jazz pianist. I only listened to his album Armistice 1918 so far, and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. It's nothing like the smooth jazz I feared it's be, it's an ambitious concept album that merges jazz with contemporary music. Carrothers' piano playing is subtle and complex. The whole record is very emotional, quite deep and never boring.

.

Now I look forward to hearing more. So yeah, this dude wan't there for very long, but he was there, and he's one of few whose later solo success doesn't owe much, if anything at all, to the fact that he used to be in Prince's camp.

Thanks for bringing Mr. Carrothers up here. I did not forget him completely tough. Googled him some time ago to see what he was doing, and indeed found out that he had become a jazz player. It’s nice to keep track on some of the lesser-known musicians from Minneapolis. Releases like Purple Snow and the recent book by Andrea Swensson help with that!

I'm not familiar with him. I will add his "Home Row" album (with Gary Peacock and Bill Stewart) to my "to listen to" list. Thanks!
