Jill Jones & The Revolution

So after Prince died, Jill started making big moves about how The Revolution was a karaoke band, totally discredited their contributions, and eluded to general anomosity. I took it as there was tension between Susannah (having Prince has a boyfriend) and Jill (because she did whatever with him), and maybe W&L&S ganged up on JJ to protect their own (Susannah) and put JJ in a weird position; like she felt jilted or otherwise cast out by these newcomers. She always seemed to have something negative to say about any of them. She didn't even show up at the First Avenue concert w/ the band, and likely had some shit to say then, too.

But then the other day, Andre Cymone organizes a Zoom chat to encourage people to vote (something about Red and Blue make Purple - I forget). All the Revolution plus Susannah are on the chat. And Jill Jones who was jovial and nodding along to the stories and whatnot. Wendy mentioned "some Rick James stories," and Jill was right in there like, "girl, you ain't lyin!"

So I don't get it. Was Jill just always trying to set the record straight, or was she really up in her feelings for a long time about The Revolution? I was always sorta shocked by her words and reactions to things post April 2016.

Am I really missing some element here? Thoughts?

My guess is that Jill had quite a bit of pent-up anger/resentment from that time period. Her album was delayed for several years, Susannah was front and center with Prince during and after the PR tour, and she was moved to an apartment in NYC in '86. Jill also did not have great things to say about her time with Prince during an interview in 2013, so she had some anger there too.

*

Susannah, during her first long interview with Toure, when explaining how Prince was frequently staying at her LA house in early/mid 1983, stated "it caused some raucous - there was a girl he was seeing, who probably still hates me to this day, but I had no idea - if you're listening, I had no idea..". Jill also made derogatory comments about Wendy & Susannah during her long interview with Prince Podcast, stating, "the plantation mistresses came in and took over....". So, she was on a stretch of "vents" shortly after Prince passed.

*

Based on the recent Zoom video it seems that she/they have made amends - at least her and The Revolution - not sure if she and Susannah will ever fully reconcile. Very hard to be friends with the person who took your lover's attention away from you smile

I've read things in the last years time, Jill was commenting on Susannah's post, about the image on the ATWIAD cover, where Susannah thought it might be Jill Jones and Jill responded kindly to her but indicated the model was not her.

I suspect things might have been hashed out overall.
It's been my surmise that most of the anger directed at the Revolution was really about Prince.

Possibly, but I got the impression her anger toward the Revolution was based on the period when Wendy - and soon after Susannah - joined the camp. She talked at length about how there was a good vibe and everyone got along until the band member changes and the "plantation mistresses" came in and influenced Prince to move away from the original group dynamic - which of course we know was just Prince shifting his attention and moving forward, as he always did during his career. Her comments indicated that she blamed W & S for those changes, but it was all shifting as soon as Dez and Vanity left the camp. The changes were inevitable, and he was moving on from PR long before the tour had ended.

*

There actually was an image online of a girl with short blonde hair (like Jill's at that time) in the same outfit and pose as the picture used for the ATWIAD cover. I swear I saw it online, but now I cannot find it. It's possible that Jill also posed for that shot and does not remember. Not sure. I found her comment on Susannah's post to be a bit sarcastic - using the "LOL" bit as if saying, oh how ridiculous you are to think that this was me. I actually initially thought it was Wendy as Susannah did before she said it might be Jill. Susanna graciously apologized to her on that post.

This. She has/had still not forgiven him for something and she was also grieving at the time.

Yes, I remember that, but ultimately it's about her and Prince's choice. Prior to 2016 I never read anything directed against them, but a lot directed at Prince. I even remember prior to 2016 Jill saying she would love to do some music with Lisa and on W&L page replying to someone with Jill Jones is not wasted talent and she is still putting out music.

I think when Jill realized/realizes that Prince would never have given her the happeniess she desired and that she is married still to a man who chose her and only her. It falls into perspect.
Prince made his choices. She's Always In My Hair was a lyrical sign.

.

The image of the woman posing for the artist was his friend. I actually asked him. Jill said she didn't pose for it, but that Prince told her the character(crying) was her. She was like 'why am I the one always crying lol'

Interesting views. Terms like "plantation mistresses" is language charged to incite.

It's always interesting how women get mad at each other because one of them is cheating with the other's man. Get mad at the man! The "other woman" isn't cheating, ya man is! He could be fuckin' a tree stump, you gonna have it cut down and removed? Or ask "why you fuckin' that tree instead of me?!" (God help the man who sticks his dick in anything that could render splinters.)

I don't believe Susannah knew about Jill or whatever. Prince was good, at times, at keeping multiple women on their own leash and unbeknownst to the other - at least for a while.

As far as Prince's music changing, it was inevitable. He wasn't going to keep remaking "Little Red Corvette" or "Private Joy" for the rest of his career. Dez and Vanity leaving certainly influenced things. Wendy wasn't a better or worse guitar player, just different. The same way Gayle was probably a different keyboard player than Lisa, the latter of whom Prince once described as being able to "play two notes with one finger." Even Mark's playing was different than Andre's. The only constant in that band throughout really was Matt and Bobby, although Lisa's pulling up a close third place there.

Jill must've not had too much animosity. Her album was out in 1987, but she was in Graffiti Bridge in 1990 and was all over the record.

Susannah was on the Zoom video with the Revolution, and Jill. I didn't see any nasty glances, but then again I didn't watch it all either. They were there for a bigger purpose. Maybe they just agree to disagree, or resolved that it doesn't matter anymore. Someone once said there is no reality, only perception. If that's true, and if Jill thought that Susannah was trying to railroad their relationship, then of course Jill is going to react to that. We only react to what is real (or we should), and ignore what is false. Susannah moved as Prince's girlfriend and fiance because that was their reality together - they were engaged, setting up a home together (on Galpin) and maneuvering through life as a couple. Susannah didn't know about Jill, so there was a lack of reaction there (especially in Jill's POV). I can see how all that would be much worse than it should've been.

But you know the common denominator in all that? PRINCE! Putcha dick away, son. It's causing too many problems.

I never heard about the ATWIAD thing. But for those that don't know, there are quite a few threads on here about that album cover, and the original Polaroids of Wendy, Sheila, Susannah, etc. posing for pics that the artist ended up using to paint the cover that we now know. The old lady crying definitely wasn't Jill.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Jill seems very conflicted about Prince. He seems to have had a profound impact on her that she does not seem to have been able to shake. She is my favorite, though. Something about her rings true. I also enjoy Lisa and she seems healthily 'removed.'

Haha isn't it true. Most of the time, the women don't even know, but they will half kill each other over a man.

.

Jill cannot be too upset, Susan Moonsie was first, then Jill, then Vanity. Or was it Kim Upsher etc Jill said she put on some jeans after being with Prince and ran into Kim who said those were her jeans. And Vanity was not happy with it, it wasn't some happy hippie circle of love. Sheila said she saw all the women and removed herself from it, but she was back in forth. And I can understand. Once Susannah left Sheila thought she had Prince all to herself locked on them drums. And even though Cat said there was nothing sexual between her and Prince, she did say Sheila was jealous and would treat her cold at times. Sheila used to be on the main floor with Prince (when she had her own band) but now she is watching Prince & Cat romp all over the stage and bump and hump. lol

.

This with Prince and Jill really fell of as she was living in Europe and she started doing her own thing away from Prince. But she was stuck on his energy. She called it sociopathic in an interview. Which I think he was operating on those wave lengths to a lesser degree.
When she didn't believe in the Jill Jones album project anymore I think that's when Prince shut off more from her. He wanted her to be connected to the SOTT shows and also wear a heart bracelett etc and she didn't want to. She want to 'Glamorous Life' it so to speak. Make it outside of his presence. When she wanted to give up Prince told her she had no charisma, and should dye her hair and get a boob job.

.
After that for the GB movie, she wasn't initially in it. He gave her a significant part to lure her, then on the plain to Minniapolis she was reading the script and realized he had cut it to almost nothing. She had a fit on the plane. Then wouldn't speak english when on set. And the song she was doing in the video is not her singing. She was lip syncing on Love Machine, to Elisa Fiorillo. Jill doesn't appear on Graffiti Bridge accept on We Can Funk with Wendy and Lisa and David.

.

That original polaroid that we thought was Wendy was the artists friend Julia.

.
Jill Jones: The picture on Around the World in a Day, when he showed me the cover, he pointed out who everybody was. Jerome was the little old man with the cane. He told me Sheila was combined with Melvoin] with the violin. And he goes, "And this is you." And it was the old maid crying, with a blue dress and these horrible boots. I'm still: Why was I always crying? I cried in Purple Rain, I cried in Graffiti Bridge, before he cut it out. He always had me crying, and I'm crying on the cover. And then he said, "I'm gonna know you until the very end of this—you're gonna be here." And I said, "Why aren't you in the [picture]?" He said, "I'm up the ladder. I'm gone."

In Prince's memoir he seemed so grateful to receive a kiss when he was 17.

Fast forward 3 years and women were everywhere.

You noted that "Haha isn't it true. Most of the time, the women don't even know, but they will half kill each other over a man."

This is frequently pointed out on the Org, and I appreciate people on this thread pointing out that far from the person a partner cheated with being the only appropriate target for anger, a deceptive cheating partner would seem at least as appropiate a target. At least in most of these situations.

You are not contradicting this, and sorry to be a broken record (about the following, as I pipe up a lot about it here on the Org)...but it is mentioned less often that Prince could get his feelings just as bent out of shape as women did. When a woman strayed, his hurt feelings could have him flipping out toward both the man and the woman.

IMO, Prince in essence attempted to create harems. On another topic (polyamory), it seems like Prince wasn't cut out to be cool and unhurt in a full-disclosure, mutual-freedom-to-fool-around polyamory world. And as good as someone might be at occasions of deception and control, nobody can fully control romantic partners. IMO, Prince was therefore destined to get hurt and lose his cool, as he sometimes showed us via his song lyrics.

I know the New York Times isn't everyone's favorite, but they've had a couple of interesting polyamory profile articles over the past few years. I think the way Prince was with his relationship-inspired feelings (again, sometimes expressed in song lyrics) made him not cut out for polyamory situations such as those profiled.

Also, thank you for those pictures! Love hearing the stories behind the album art.
On a super minor note, though I love that quote of his about being up the ladder, and there's no reason why in the world of art and imagination, one can't be in multiple places at once...does anyone think that Prince would have also said he identified himself with the cloud-suit person if his blonde hair dye had not harmed his hair, not (obviously) working out the way he'd hoped?

TrivialPursuit, do I recall correctly that you are a hairdresser? If you are still reading, what do you think?

OF4S - Love the album art pics! They've been circulating onine for awhile now too.

*

I'm pretty sure the Clara Bow figure on the ITWIAD cover is supposed to represent Wendy though. Prince sang about it in Condition of the Heart, and Wendy has mentioned that he told her that her facial expressions reminded him of Clara Bow - which is pretty cool that he knew who Clara was back then smile He loved watching old movies, so that makes sense. He also had Wendy in the same outfit as Clara Bow for the Raspberry Beret video.

*

Susannah said she knows the story of why Sheila's figure was changed to have a mustache, but she said it's not really that interesting. Would love to know that information!!

I mean, Clara Bow is pretty much Clara Bow on the cover, and makes sense given her mention in a song. But, it could lend to Wendy, a tiny bit. I tend to think that the people were just people, loosely based on the band but were their own folks in general.

We know Prince had a specific list of people he wanted on the cover. And an earlier version of the cover by Jim Warren supports that.

I think for the "Raspberry Beret" video, some of them just morphed into what was on the album cover. I mean, the three people in robes in the top right - two of them could easily be Prince, to me.

Lengthy thread on the period here.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I don't have much to say since I took to most of what transpired like a reality tv show. Both sides are generational in the business which there very well could be elements going on the fans have no clue about. Being that pissed off over boyfriend issues for 35+ years seem trivial no pun intended. Personally I always took it as putting on a show until the money part got squared away, And it appears it has been.

Thoughts?

I don't have much to say since I took to most of what transpired like a reality tv show. Both sides are generational in the business which there very well could be elements going on the fans have no clue about. lol

Ah, but never underestimate the passions that fuel romantic pursuit.

Margot

It is hard for me to imagine still having feelings (conflicted) for a long-ago lover, but I guess it's hard to get closure when the guy is brought up all the time (at least in her circle).

Proximity to fame can inflame. She was likely done wrong by Prince on some deep levels... I've always thought that.

(The others are just annoyances)

I'm pretty sure the Clara Bow figure on the ITWIAD cover is supposed to represent Wendy though. Prince sang about it in Condition of the Heart, and Wendy has mentioned that he told her that her facial expressions reminded him of Clara Bow - which is pretty cool that he knew who Clara was back then smile He loved watching old movies, so that makes sense. He also had Wendy in the same outfit as Clara Bow for the Raspberry Beret video.

Oh ok, I have a few PR shows where he called her Clara Bow to give him some guitar licks

Yeah that line in Condition of the Heart is a play on Wendy & Susannah's twinning

lol I always thought they looked like Jesse Johnson in the robes, and then in maybe morphed into the robed Madhouse band

a lot of robes were worn between 1984-1987 lol

Wendy has always made funny expressions with her face and mouth. You can see it in the Kiss video too - when she makes the funny smirk expression when Prince is dancing up to her.

In the song Condition of the Heart, which is believed to be about Susannah, he sings:

*

There was a woman from the ghetto
Who made funny faces just like
Clara Bow, how was I to know
That she would wear the same
Cologne as you and giggle the same
Giggle that you do?
Whenever I would act a fool, the fool
With a condition of the heart

*

It is believed that he is referring to Wendy as Clara Bow and her twin Susannah in those lyrics.

*

We know that some of the characters on the ATWIAD cover are just there to represent some of the songs (woman w/ the raspberry beret, girl on the seesaw, American flag, etc), but I think others represent some of the people close to Prince, and the band members at that time. The girl playing the violin w/ ballet slippers is obviously Susannah, as we've seen the real picture, and Sheila's actual picture too = minus the mustache which was added. The artist, Doug Henders, posed for the figure in the cloud suit, however, Prince wore that suit in the Raspberry Beret video, and he had also briefly dyed his hair blonde during that time, so I do think that figure is meant to be Prince. Jill may not have posed for the picture of the girl crying, because I think she was already in NYC by that point. She would not have been in LA at that time. However, I do think that figure would represent her, as Prince always portrayed her that way. Even in the GB film she was the disgruntled girlfriend who left because she was not getting the love or attention from Prince.

Susannah looked pissed being on that call. She did come in late so maybe was surprised to see Jill. Morris Hayes hogged most of the convo and Lisa just laid in her bed. Jill did make a crack about “moving into a fan’s home” cause covid has caused lack of $$$ coming in and they all admitted wanting to perform again.
