I like the music. Very simple. But nice to listen to. I'll admit that I haven't heard any of Sheila E's music that was made in my lifetime (apart from the one with Snoop Dogg) so perhaps this is old news but it was a surprise to me to hear how poor her voice is now. She was never a great singer to begin with but what voice she had has not aged well. Having said that, I think it's a decent song. I notice that Mychael Gabriel is credited as a writer on the song. It might have been better had he sang it instead. But as it is, it's something I'll listen to a little bit but I don't see it finding a permanent home on my playlist. | |

If I had to guess I'd say it's a one off single which, if it gains enough traction, could lead to a full album. Legacy acts like Sheila E rely on having a steady fanbase. Like, she's not going to be getting any new fans at this point. So this new single is probably just testing the waters to see how many of her longtime fans are still interested. If it does well, they'll release an album. If not, they'll wait or she'll be off to a different label to try again. Having said that, I don't know her situation so I'm just making an educated guess. For what it's worth, I hope it does lead to a full album because despite the vocals, I quite like this song. It's grown on me more than I thought it would. | |

Okay...sounds like a nice little summer bop for grown folks. This is what you want to play in the car while you're driving somewhere sunny, maybe on vacation... maybe the way to the beach or to have cocktails. The instrumentation and backing vocals are putting me in the mind of Moonchild. I could see myself putting Lemon Cake on a mix with them for a nice summer drive groove. | |

Sorry, but I think the song is amateurish and not good. Elementary level lyrics and bad music. It is clear why Prince wrote and produced her songs in the 80's. She's an excellent percussionist and drummer. Songwriter/producer....not so much.

There's not much going on lyrically, but the rest of it's not bad. Seems to be aiming for that floaty 'could've been an Art Official Age outtake' vibe. |

A few years ago,Sheila was planning a double album called Girl Meets Boy but it never came out.If she decides to release a new album called Lemon Cake,there are alot of fun ways to promote it.
"Lemon Cake".....the delicious new album from Sheila E.
or she could do a promotional tie-in with Duncan Hines.Buy the album,get a free box of lemon cake mix with it,along with lemon frosting.

Yeah, the verses are kinda whack, but that hook is fire. I've seen that on a lot of Sheila's albums in the last years: she can definitely construct killer choruses. But similar to P, a lot of times her verses aren't that strong lyrically. It is still a nice floaty vibe like you said. Nice for sunny driving or a sexy summer night over cocktails on the patio. | |
