Backup singers ... ?

Prince’s instrumental band mates almost always (99.99%) seem excellent if not peerless to my ear.

BUT...often...more times than I like to recall...despite some excellent gorgeous voices (Rosie, Morris, Chaka, Marva...)...when I really listen with a good set of headphones...some of his backup singers are just CRINGE WORTHY (30% of the time). And yet usually it doesn’t ruin a piece; if anything it makes the songs more approachable for those like me who could not sing “row row row your boat” to save our souls. AND they makes Prince’s vocals sound even better by contrast (!).

It’s as if he hired most backup singers the way Faux news hires most news commentators. Not trying to hate on Tony M, but he was clearly just a great dancer.

After listening to a recent Morris interview, I think Prince realized how excellent a vocalist MD was (he never shined more than on the horribly underrated/ignored Condensate album) and was a tiny bit envious of his delivery. Aside from “Jungle Love” which clearly showed off MD’s brilliant chops—clearly superior to Prince’s beautiful “original” demo version, Prince only threw crap songs Morris’ way. Prince clearly had a superior range over all, but MD had TOTAL command of his lane.

You kidding? Prince gave away some of his best songs. Imagine P releasing Jerk Out, 777 9311, The Stick, and Ice Cream Castles. No, not versions with scratch guide vocals, but full on Princey versions. It would've been stunning.

???
Morris was just another version of Prince - he was the 'pimp' side. If it wasn't for Prince there wouldn't have been a Morris Day character.
Yes, Morris is talented & made the character his own stage (at one time off stage) persona but without P, well, it just would not even BE!
The kind of love that takes over your body, mind, & soul

I guess we may yet see what he played with before handing them off.
