I know nothing about First Ave so try not to jump all over me for asking the question: are the stars paid for by the represented artists or does First Ave just decide who to put up there? ETA: I can't see P paying for one so I'd think not paid but I really don't know for sure.

No one pays for it.
Prior to Prince First Avenue had too many stars on the wall, and redid the wall |

I’m not questioning why the NPG doesn’t have one. I’m saying having a Prince and a Revolution star is duplicative. The Prince star encompasses his entire career, including when it was Prince and The Revolution. Maybe I’d feel differently if The Revolution has a body of work outside of Prince that they were famous for. FYI, I felt the same way when the E Street band was induced into the RRHOF.
I can't see the Revolution getting in the RRHOF but, in all honesty, Purple Rain is the reason 99% of the world has even heard of First Avenue so I think they've earned a separate star on this specific building; The Time as well.

Krantz says there’s a committee of people who decide should make the wall. There’s only one hard rule: An artist had to perform at First Avenue. They are such sticklers to this rule that First Avenue removed Adele’s star in 2011 after she canceled her show due to voice issues. The committee then asks whether the artist(s) sold out the room. “You know, there’s relationships with bands,” says Krantz. “Historical significance comes into play.”
Now people can argue that the Revolution are a Milli Vanilli band all they like but the fact is the album is credited to Prince & The Revolution and The Revolution is the name of the band in the film and there's no way around that. Right those albums were credited to Prince and The Revolution not just The Revolution. Again it would be similar to having a star for Bruce Springsteen and then another for the E Street band. @endiadj - can I ask, and I don't mean this in any kind of sarcastic way - did you experience Prince and The Revolution back in the 1984-1986 period? Were you of the age to see the film and/or watch them live back then? I think some of this is a "you had to be there" kind of thing in terms of realizing the historic importance of this band and also how they are so connected to First Avenue.
*
I know there are a lot of Prince fans who missed that period, so I was just wondering. It was truly epic in terms of how Prince (and the band) exploded during that time. It was the equivalent of Beatle-mania. |

I might agree with you if The Revolution hadn't sold out many nights at First Avenue without Prince. The star takes into account the band's entire history there, not just in the 80s.

Playing music they wrote without Prince?
Does it matter?
From 1978-1986 the people associated with the Revolution basically lived @ First Avenue
They performed there (outside of Prince) before he died and after he died. They are a part of the history.
Soon enough we will all be too old, and many of us dead.

Yes.
Edit: I initially read your question as "Playing without Prince, the music they wrote" which is not what you meant, haha. But that doesn't change the fact that they sold out nights there when Prince wasn't performing with them.

Eh, maybe if the Prince star had said Prince & the Revolution instead of just Prince but it doesn't. The Revolution are on First Avenue for historical significance reasons. I wish you luck on your quest to get the E Street Band out of the RRHOF though

As much as I appreciate & enjoy their time with Prince, and their story telling.....That’s just silly.
If they had performed their own music, I could understand.
It should’ve stated Prince & The Revolution.
But it’s there now, can’t do anything about it now. |

Right on. And they were/are far from a Milli Vanilli band. They are all talented musicians in their own right, and Prince used many of their ideas/riffs and even full song ideas/compositions during the time they played together. Prince always worked with skilled players. He was a perfectionist and would not have chosen anyone who could not hold their own in his bands. [Edited 6/11/19 6:50am] |

Prince already has his own star on the wall so it's not silly. On the contrary, it's well-deserved. The band has a history of performing sold-out shows there with and without Prince.
