Lisa’s playing is so ethereal and soothing. She stated that when she first joined Prince’s band and lived at his house for awhile Prince told her he would have the best dreams when she played while he slept. I totally understand that.

I agree! The samples are absolutely gorgeous. I hadn't heard that he had said that about her playing. How nice! 😊

Her background vocals use to compliment Prince's(r.i.p.) so well. Before Wendy's. The best harmonizing in his music by far, in my opinion. Hard to top songs like Mountains, Love Or Money, Sometimes It Snows In April, 4 The Tears In Your Eyes, and many more. They were the “magic trio”.

I never said it wasn't. I'm only talking about when Lisa was the sole female back up singer. I LOVED how her voice complimented Prince's(r.i.p.).

Yes, Lisa was always good, but Jill Jones was also part of the backup on many of the earlier songs, and she was on stage during the 1999 tour.

Well Jill was in her own special category as a back up singer. - For some reason, Prince had a special ability to choose women with special voices. - I always felt that Lisa's voice as well as all other women following over the next years, added some sexyness, horny-sound to his music and added that 'dirty dry sound' to his sung lyrics. And, most important, were in contrast with his own voice and harmonies. A contrast that matched very well. - Were all these women good singers ? Not particularly, but the outcome of all the elements together; Prince, his sexual lyrics, the sexy voices of his background singers, etc... It all was that magical outcome we all love, and was indeed very special, and not to forget, 'new' at some level, when it all came together. -

I think the more the women were stronger singes, the less sexier the outcome.

I don't think it's only about the "sexiness" of the lyrics, because there were many songs that were not sexual (Mountains, SISIA, Free, 4 The Tears In Your Eyes, Pop Life, etc), and the vocals still sound great. I think Lisa and Wendy stand out, because they were not just singing backup for him - they were collaborating with him a lot on the music too. They were/are talented musicians, and they knew how to use their voices in order to add to the "mood" of the song - even though they were/are not "technically" top vocalists. Their voices paired well together - Lisa's higher tone and Wendy's a bit lower - created those nice harmonies. It's the same with their own music they released after Prince. Their voices sound beautiful on the slower moody songs like Song About, Stay, Everything But You, etc. Of course, they also had Susannah and Lisa's Sister Cole singing with them too which added to the richness of the sound. * No one can deny that Boni Boyer and Rosie Gaines had more talent on vocals, however, I don't think they had even close to the chemistry that Prince had with Wendy and Lisa. I think Vannormal said it best with the idea that Wendy and Lisa's singing style and sound was in contrast to Prince's more funky style and deeper tone (when he wasn't using his falsetto), which created that really special sound.

Nah, I don't think JJ was any more special than any of the others in his camp who sang backup for him. She just stuck it out the longest - off and on though.

Of course YOU wouldn't(for obvious reasons) But Jill is one of the special ones. Because she is one of the rare back up singers that got her OWN album out of it while with Prince(r.i.p.). Liv Warfield also."That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

Yeah, okay. Her own album that took FOUR years to release, and was not a commercial success. Then Prince refused to allow her to use any tracks for a second album. * Jill Jones on her time with Prince (pulled from the Beautiful Nights Interview):
"Ten years. Ten Years (emphasis added). Wasted. Yeah, ten years wasted. And I don't think fondly of these ten years, the ten years that I'm thinking of... But, I got a good song out of it." * Jill Jones on trying to make a second album with Prince: * "Jill Jones on the unfinished second Paisley Park album: We (Jones and Prince) were kind of were at two different roads. The song (“Boom Boom”) was from 1982 and it seemed forced. He kept remixing it. I went to do the video, but, it was late, it was too late. And I just ended up going back to New York, got married and waited until my contract expired. During this time he called me-- and I was at a friend's house-- and said, "you don't have any charisma, you should dye your hair black and you need to get breast implants like Brigitte Nielsen." I was furious... Dickens (CEO of Warner Brothers UK) was instrumental at one point with Roger Davies, my manager, when we were trying to complete my second album alone. Without Prince. But, Prince rejected every attempt we tried." * So.....special??? Nah I wouldn't say so....

I already heard that WHOLE interview among others of Jill(whom I partied with). The majority of women that worked with Prince(r.i.p.) even your "idols" WENDY & Lisa(beautiful, best harmonizing, magic trio )didn't get everything they wanted from Prince(r.i.p.). That doesn't mean they weren't special.
So another failed attempt of U digging up something I ALREADY heard. Sorry, but NOOOOO comparison between the working/collaborating relationship of Wendy and Lisa vs. Jill Jones. Come on!!! Ha! And the "Org Quote" that came up while writing this reply is "Lisa, I'm gonna give U the brush and U're gonna paint the side of the train..." from the fabulous All My Dreams track recorded with Wendy and Lisa. * Wendy and Lisa also continued to work with him through the years, and he stayed in contact with them.

"All My Dreams" happens to be my ALL TIME favorite collaboration by them. I don't mean sexier as in SEX lol people us sexy for different things. Like a car can be called sexy. It's more about an expression. Like 'romance' isn't always about 'eros' but the expression of doing things a certain way.
I general Lisa, Wendy, Jill, Susannah, Sheila E and Cat gave great Prince back up (as far as females went) I liked Boni too. I liked the 'choirs' too on Free:Lisa Vanity JJ and Wendy and on the Ladder Lisa Wendy Susannah & Tag Sevelle (and BrownMark) I wish he did more of this back then.
But back to the topic. I wonder if there are some things they did together back in the 80s, not known, created by W&L or others in the band, that they would be able to do on this knew project.

- From what I read here the most is that everyone remembers his female singers from the 80s. Sure Rosie Gaines (and Boni) had great technique. But that was about it I think. (I never liked the album diamonds and pearls, because I think Rosie’s voice is all too much upfront). - We all underestimate the quality of the singer is Jill Jones, Susanna, even Brenda (wasn’t mentioned yet) had a great quality of singing. Vanity and Apollonia and all the others did their thing, and honestly, up until this day these known classic (Prince) songs are perfect with their voices. It made the songs to what they are, and they are gstunning and we all love them. I can not imagine these songs being sung by anyone else with a better voice. Prince somehow knew how to twist it well. - For some unexplainable reason is I like sheilas voice though she is not a great singerat all. - Another thing, for those few male singers he worked with on the other hand had some qualities too. Specifically Morris... right? - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Sheila E. actually can hold her own. Have U heard her lead single "Hold Me" off her 1987 self titled album? Plus she went on tour with Lionel Richie and sung the duet "Endless Love" EVERY night.
