Earl Jones worked for Prince until 1992.

Yes - Earl is the only hair stylist listed under the Nude Tour staff on princevault.com. Tonya Thompson is the stylist listed under the Diamonds and Pearls staff information. Kim Berry's name is not listed until the 1995 Ultimate Live Tour. She has said that Tonya quit unexpectedly and abruptly, so the roster may not have been updated with Kim Berry's name, but it's odd that she is not listed until 1995. Act I and Act II tours still list Tonya Thompson. Hmmmm.... hmmm

As far as I recall Earl Jones was also mentioned in the liner notes of the Diamonds and Pearls album, so I guess that Tonya Thompson probably took care of Prince´s hair during the tour and Earl probably left before the tour. He passed away in the early 90s.

To me, he´ll always be the quintessential Prince hairstylist and creator of his most iconic hairstyles.

Maybe Kim just doesn´t remember exactly when she started and stopped working for Prince and exaggerated a bit, which is no big deal for me but I understand why most people would have an issue with how she remembers her timeline of employment. It probably just sounds better to say 29 or 25 years instead of saying roughly 20 years on and off.

Personally, I´d prefer the exact number of years instead of a higher but exaggerated number because it would make her more credible in general but that´s just me.

I was wondering when she was officially included as part of the staff. She said in the interview for Uncovering Prince that she came on around 87/88 I assumed she meant that was when she became part of the entourage since she said she was dating one of his bodyguards at the time. I just listened again and she said that was when she began working for him. I wonder which bodyguard she dated too.

Which proves Prince(r.i.p.) wasn't talking about Kim in 'Madrid 2 Chicago'...

NO, it DOES NOT prove that at all. People who come out as gay often date the opposite sex in their earlier years. Actually, most of them do. Madrid 2 Chicago was recorded in 1998 - 10 years after she stated she was dating one of his bodyguards. I'm actually really wondering about any of her statements, because it does not seem that she was his stylist until 1995.

In the Uncovering Prince interview she talked like she was there for Grafitti Bridge too. They asked her about the 'Typhoon' and she said Tanya started that look and she came in and finished it. That would put her timeline around 94/95,you're right. She said she started in 87/88 at the beginning of he intervie so she does seem to have her times mixed up or she's adding some years in there. I think that interview was the first time I heard her say she began working for him during the Lovesexy tour. In this interview she said she worked for him for 30 years. https://www.youtube.com/w...pp=desktop

She said she was younger than Prince and I seem to recall that she said she is in her late 40's. I just listened to another interview where she said she worked for him for 28 years. She said she was 18/19 when she started.

It is not just Prince that would be talking.

My honest guess, and face it I never met the man but I have a clue how women act. The muses know that Kim and Shelby and Rosie were not competition. They all have that mother figure/ fairy godmother sort of way about them. Slightly more matronly looking, the Auntie that might give yuo councel on why Prince is suddenly being so distact.

" what has he said to you about me; you can be honest?"

"Do you think he has lost interest in me?"

"Has he said anything about anybody else?"

My guess is that Prince was gifted at building confidence in these muses on one hand and on the other hand making them deeply insecure as to where they stood with him.

The whole Jehovah's Witness thing with him was too much. He got Manuela to join and then poor Bria. I think Bria was utterly convinced that Prince would indeed ask her to marry him by 2010. In my opinion that is not because she is delusional but because he said things to lead her on.

The term is commonly used for both men and women these days. Not that "lesbian" is never used, but I guess it's just an easier word to describe homosexuality whether male or female.

Prince is someone that will have books written about him period. I would much rather that a book come out about him written by a woman that saw him on a regular basis then for her to not do the book and 10 years from now we get books written by people who once knew Kim Berry or once knew Shelby J and remembered some of he things that they were told in passing.

I have been longing for a book written by a woman like Kim Berry, Shelby J or Rosie Gaines etc. A book written by a woman who was never his muse and saw what his relationship were with his family and ex-lover. Many of these muses were not speaking to him all that much when he died. What was his relationships with people really like?

He always had a protege here or there and some looked like romances but I had gotten the feeling after his divorce from Manuela that he was not going to be marrying anybody else. That didn't mean that he would be honest about it. I believe that he did lead a few women on with just how open he might be to a third marriage.

I have only been a fan since 2008 and since that time women just seem to disapear suddenly. There seemed to be no mention of them again. Maya and Nandy McClean suddenly disapeared. Bria was all over the place, except on stage, gone. Misty Copeland got on stage and in a video and he seemed quite impressed. Then he didn't use her again in future videos. Next the world of Prince was Andy Allo. Next, Third Eye Girl and Judith.

People tell a lot to their hairdresser wink , I don't think that Prince was an exception. popcorn

I'm with you on this. IMO, the muses came and went like oil changes, but someone with a couple of decades under their belt, who discussed family issues, everyday occurances, someone who has a better bird's eye view of the more recent daily, weekly, monthly going ons, would be very interesting to a whole lot of us. She was there at PP (how many years was Prince living at PP? 10?) not at some shop across town unlike most average people's hairdressers, simple observation weighs a lot more to me than generalized opinion.

[Edited 3/27/19 16:33pm]

I may be wrong but I always got the feeling that he encouraged the women around him to competer with one another. I would also like to know more about his family and among his bandmates, who did he consider a true friend. Another thing I would love to know more about his whole Jehovah's Witness thing. His lyrice, his OUTFITS, the amount of women etc, seems to all class with the whole door knocking witness that he wanted people to see him as. Did those close to him ever take him on or did they just nod their head and say nothing?

I think we can all agree that 100% of Prince's lyrics are about his life and he never made up anything or took creative license to make his lyrics rhythm. He just didn't have the imagination to make up lyrics that weren't true. LOL

I really doubt that Kim Berry would have full insight into all of the things in his life that you listed above. No way. I thnk when he was in with her it was discussing what he wanted to do with his hair, and/or what ideas she may have, mixed with some small talk. I don't think he was sharing personal feelings about the women in his life. She may have been privy to gossip among the other PP associates, but I really doubt anything came straight from Prince.

*

Regarding the JW thing - various associates and friends have stated that he would talk for HOURS about the JW beliefs, and try to convert those around him. Morris Hayes said he left the NPG for a while because of the religious talk. Questlove has told the story of literally falling asleep during one of Prince's "talks" on religion which lasted for hours. He was talking to anyone around him who was willing to listen to him. The whole thing he did at PP June of 2001 with bringing fans there was centered around his conversion to JW - Kevin Smith discussed that situation.

*

So, the JW piece was never private. The members are supposed to "spread the word" and try to convert people. Everything else I'm sure he kept private.

Not stating that, however, I think he led an interesting enough life that he really didn't need to embellish too much or use "imaginative" lyrics. I actually do think that he usually wrote about his actual life experiences - just in a very creative way. Many who worked with and/or were close to him have stated this. He was a quiet observer but he "talked" through his music.

*

A great example is the song Starfish & Coffee - for years people had no idea what the lyrics meant, or whether it was just an imaginative and fictional tale. Now we know it was based on a very true story of Susannah Melvoin's childhood that she would tell him while they were together.

You are making the assumption that he confided in Kim B, Shelby and/or Rosie Gaines about his very personal feelings. I really do not think he did that. I do agree that Prince was a master manipulator when it came to his women/muses - and the fact that they were typically much younger only added to his ability to control them. However, I don't see him sitting around talking to his platonic band mates or hairdresser about his plans for the women and/or his feelings about them.

*

Someone like Ruth Arzate, who was his personal assistant for many years in the 2000's would be a great resource to find out how much he really shared about his personal life. From the few that she has told so far, it does not seem that he revealed too much.

Good point. Kim seems to have a fondness for a few of the women in his life so I wonder if she may also be a bit biased towards them. I also wonder if she sought to get permisssion to mention the women in the book if she did. She seems friendly with Mayte so I think there's a good chance she may be aware of what she may have shared about her. I just saw a post on FB from last year where some fans were speculating about RNRLA and one said they thought it was about Prince and Andy and another said they agreed but that they should ask Kim to be sure. She replied that "it is indeed" so it makes me wonder if one or the other shared that info with her. She appeared to be very certain with her reply so she has no problem sharing about things like that. I doubt that Prince would want her putting anything too personal out there so I would hope she wouldn't reveal things that he may have told her in confidence. In the talks she has done she's mainly shared funny stories that happened while on the road and from what she has said, the book will be similar. I would prefer a book like that rather than her sharing gossip about his romantic relationships.

He was a brilliant man who made stupid mistakes such as not writing a will. He didn't save money by micromanaging his music, in the end he lost money by missing opportunities to get his old stuff out to a new crowd while he was alive!

At least one book about the man that isn't written by a woman who thinks of him as her "soulmate' would be nice.

Someone like Ruth Arzate, who was his personal assistant for many years in the 2000's would be a great resource to find out how much he really shared about his personal life. From the few that she has told so far, it does not seem that he revealed too much.

How would any of us know? Also it seems people’s biases come into play in terms of who they believe and who the don’t. The problem with Kim is she can’t seem to get her timelines straight. One minute she joined during the D&P era, the next she was around during Lovesexy/GB.

According to Lisa, Prince was "like a fancy lesbian."

Gay people think everyone is secretly gay.

disbelief What a ridiculously untrue blanket statement.

"Like a fancy lesbian" doesn't have to mean she thought he was gay. My ex used to call himself a lesbian trapped in a man's body. It was basically a joke because he liked to eat pussy so much. I've heard other straight guys say it too, it's not that unusual.

Kim has admitted more than once that she wasn't a fan of Prince's(r.i.p.) music. So it's quite possible that she could get the time periods mixed up with his music & when she started doing his hair. Since she could care less if it was the Lovesexy period or Diamonds & Pearls period. Unlike me who can name each album time period in my sleep. Non fans could care less. To me it's really no big deal. It's still well over 20 years. She was fresh out of High School when she started working for him. Plus she was already part of the crew before that by dating Prince's(r.i.p.) bodyguard. Also she was the LONGEST hairdresser he had. Which qualifies her to know A LOT. Men & woman of a certain ethnicity share a lot with their hairdressers it's a culture thing.

All of U are just trying to sabotage her book. But it's not going to happem. It'll be a TOP seller. Especially when Ellen,Oprah & Jimmy Fallon interview her.

I´m actually very curious about her book because I wonder what a hairstylist could possibly write about but it kind of irks me that she gets her timeline wrong and that she mentions the Lovesexy era or even 1987 as the time when she started working for him when the great Earl Jones was still Prince´s hairstylist until 1992. That just makes me very skeptical and it´s not a good strategy on her behalf. I´d take her more seriously if she took her info seriously.......whether she worked for him from 1988 to 2014 does not really impress me. Make that 1995 to 2014 but be honest is all I´m saying.
