I don't think hair coloring products were very good back then - probably straight bleach
Yes,Kim Berry talked about how he was constantly wanting to try new highlights and colors back then. I wonder what made him want to bleach it in '85? I noticed he mentions blond hair in the song 'Coco Boys.'
1985 his protege leads:Sheila E(along with Juan and Steph B) and St Paul, were both blonde highlights, so somehow that connects |

I think Prince and/or his sytlists may have orchestrated the haircuts/color changes for Sheila and her band's looks. I had read that when Sheila first arrived in MN to join the camp she was wearing a sports jersey, jeans and sneakers I think Prince "svengalied" her like he did with Jill Jones's look. |

Most likely. The costumes for 'Romance 1600' as well. |

That's what I'm saying. His proteges were styled with that blonde highlights, so it was most likely reflective of what Prince was going for.
.
side note: Sheila E's sporty look I strongly believe was something that a lot of sexual assault victims do to look less attractive/feminine etc to ward off any other attention by people who might sexually assault them. Most either go the cover up route or the expose more route. |

Sheila E talked about the costume styles in her book. I believe she/they had a hand in the designing of the outfits, of course prince probably worked with her/them, but it came out of her 'budget'. |

Oh ok. They reminded me of some of the looks Prince had for the Purple Rain tour. I've read comments from some fans who thought Sheila was copying his style. |

She did seem tomboyish. She was dressing very provacatively onstage for some of the concerts back then. I remember she said in interviews that she ended up regretting that. |

Yes, Prince really went full on sexual with the outfits on the SOTT and LoveSexy tours. Very impresdive how she was able to wear the really skimpy outfits, high heels, plus dance and do all of the drumming too. I have no doubt she would have preferred to just stay behind the drums |

Yep! She looked amazing in those outfits though! Some of the ones that she wore in '84/'85 were kind of scanty too. I recall her saying in an interview that she began to feel bad about the message she was projecting to young girls. |

the sanctimonious 'apology' of it is just that. It's not like she was the only woman in the industry showing sexy. Not to mention, she took more clothes off after she left the Prince camp

But the sexual molestation started before that. Sheila E admitted she didn't start dealing with it until the time period coming up to her book. . It is a very common coping mechanism to make oneself look less feminine/girly. A lot of girls/women cut their hair, wear baggy boyish clothes, less/no make up etc so as to not 'attract' any sexual attention.

I know that can happen with girls, but I don't think that is why she dressed "sporty" when not performing. She talked a lot to Questlove about growing up and that she was huge into playing sports. She said she won awards and always best out the competition. I know she went through abuse but it also seems that she was a tomboy during her adolescent and teen years. |

It is possible she just didn't go into it deep. It was in her book and maybe she just was not bringing it up anymore. I mean she only started dealing with what happened to her in the last 10 yrs of her life. |

That's true. It seemed some of her regret was due to religious conviction as well from what she has said. |

Right, it's always possible that Sheila went for sports and the "tomboy" look in order to prevent male attention. I do agree that some girls will do that, but the way she talked about it with Queslove was in a very matter-of-fact style, and she seemed to be proud of her athletic abilities in her youth.
*
I do see how - as Pink commented earlier - she would have had conflicts with her skimpier outfits while in Prince's camp with regard to the message she was sending to young girls. I'm sure that was tough, because it took many years for female performers to not feel pressured to be a sex symbol in addition to being an artist. |

I fell asleep listening to Sheila's interview with Questlove last night. Good interview! She was so funny and came across very real. I got to the part about working with Lionel and dropped off. I'll listen to the rest later. |

Oh, you'll love the rest of the interview! It's really cute when they start talking about her working with Prince, and Questlove trying to get all of her drum programming secrets Really sweet. It's clear he's such a huge fan. I really enjoyed listening to her stories. I never knew she was the girl in Lionel Ritchie's Running With The Night video - went back and watched it on YT, and sure enough, there she is!! Too funny - I wore a dress exactly like the one she's wearing in the video to a wedding in 1984, except it was cream colored instead of dark red Those 80's styles really stand out when you look at them again! |

Sounds great! I loved her story about playing for Marvin Gaye and adding an extra beat to 'What's Goin On' at one of the shows then blaming it on her brother when Marvin got upset about it. Also loved her story about working for Dianna Ross. I vaguely remember seeing Sheila in the 'Running with The Night' video. Those styles do really stand out now. I don't remember what the dressed looked like she wore for the video. I'll have to look it up now lol. I finished the episode. Sheila didn't seem to want to share too much with Questlove on air about the drum techniques and equipment used on the recordings. Excellent interview though. A lot of fun too!

Sheila looked very good back then. She also looked really pretty straight throughout the 2000s when she played with Prince. She looks good now too. I always laugh when I remember during a video last year I think it was when she commented on getting her hair or lashes done and she said ya gotta do the best you can with "whatever you've got left." I relate! |

God bless her. That's a pianful thing to process. ANd very, very common.
Agreed, a lot of people use food also, to ward off attention. If you ever knew what's behind many heavy people's size you'd never judge an overweight person again. [Edited 2/26/19 21:15pm] |

True! I think discussion began about Prince bleaching his hair in '85 and Sheila was brought up and it took off from there. |

Jill Jones said when she first saw Sheila E she looked more like Larry Graham. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream." |
