Agree. Those songs just go deeper than some of the others.

Yes, we've heard over and over - both by Prince and those who had closer relationships with him- that he expressed his life and feelings within his music. So, if you go by that then you have to really look at the depth of the lyrics to distinguish between his more serious vs. casual relationships.

Exactly. That makes sense.

I believe the love of his like was Denise Matthews(Vanity).Sure he was married twice. Mani even resembled Vanity. When he was on your and found out about her death he dedicated most of the concert to her. Even rearranged his tour to be in town for her funeral. He never got over her and she said he was the love of her life. Then he dies a few months after her. I don't think it's a coincidence. He even tried to get her back before she married in 1995. May they RIP together.

From the very beginning Vanity captured his heat. She was a beautiful person who had a beautiful spirit. I felt that when I met her. I followed her and Prince's careers listening to their music and interviews. They were expressing how much they loved each other. I'm sure he had some type of love for his two wives but the love he had for Denise was special and everyone who spent anytime around them while they were together knew it. Purple Rain, The Beautiful One's, Diamonds and Pearls, Little Red Corvette, The Greatest Romance, Adore' I hate You, ETC. All those were written for and about her. Prince Said "Without you there is no me" They are together again in Paradise. Her death was Hard for him to deal with. She was his inspiration. When she died so did his inspiration.

I love you baby
But not like I love my guitar, no
Not like I love my guitar
Oh, listen
Turn it up
Yeah, now dig
I tried to warn you that it's hard to be a star
Especially when your driving other people's car
I woulda gave you mine, girl, but you took it too far
I love you baby
But, just not like I love my guitar
Not like I love my guitar
I know you love me and you wanna be friends
And if you don't at least you need to pretend
We're still together even if we don't get that far
I love you baby
But not like I love this guitar
I love you, I love you baby

You are truly reaching here, and again, like so many other "Vanity obsessed" people, creating a fairytale story that just did not exist at all. Yes, he loved her at one time- but more than anything, he was physically attracted to her. Go back and read the lyrics to "Wonderful Ass" again. Prince had moved on during and after the 1999 tour, which is why she left - along with wanting more money. He became smitten with, and emotionally connected to Susannah Melvoin while on the 1999 tour, and there are many songs he recorded which describe his intense feelings for her. However, he was not monogamous with her either - nor was he with any of the other women - most likely including his two wives. He conitnuously gave in to temptation.

*

Adore was not written for Vanity. In 2002 Prince was asked who inspired the song during the NPGMC Q&A portion of his rehearsal on the ONA tour, and he told them it was written for Susannah. When Prince was asked, during an online Q&A in 1997, who inspired the song Forever In My Life, he responded, "Susannah, she knows." I Hate U was not written for Vanity, nor was Little Red Corvette, nor was Diamonds and Pearls. Show me where those songs were confirmed by Prince to be written for/about Vanity. In fact, the woman who most likely inspired the song LRC has come forward with specific information about her time with Prince. The song lyrics do not connect with Vanity, as he was still with her during the time he recorded the song - she did not "love him and leave him fast" as per the song lyric.

*

Prince DID NOT die because Vanity died. Vanity died from Schlerosing Encapsulating Peritonitis -a rare complication of Kidney dialysis. Prince died, because he (most likely unknowingly) took a pain pill that was laced with Fentanyl. Please do some research on how deadly the drug is when taken without prescription. It is 30 times stronger than Heroine. This is not the "Romeo & Juliette" story that some fans are creating. Although I'm sure Prince knew he was not doing well I have no doubt that he did not expect to die the way he did, as he was still planning ahead.

Yes, he had future plans for sure. Even the fact that, per Susannah Melvoin's recent interview, he had sent her new lyrics in order for them to write/record together again shows that he had not lost inspiration to live because of Vanity's death. What a far-fetched story!!

Well, his Engineer at the time of his death was involved, so I'm sure he could confirm that. She wouldn't have mentioned him if she was fabricating a story. Actually, I seriously doubt she would fabricate the story at all. I hope she posts the lyrics - or whatever he sent her at some point. If she's writing a book maybe she'll include it there.

Ditto. It's possible that she mentioned it because she plans on including it in an upcoming book. She had been working on a children's book related to Starfish & Coffee, but stated during the interview that it has turned into a much bigger project. So, hopefully she will add it to that book or project.

I recall her saying that about the "much bigger project" and wondered what she may have meant by that. Hopefully she will reveal the project and possibly the lyrics as well eventually.

Which higher power gave you the capability to read Prince's mind that you know he was only physically attracted to Denise than anything else? Read the lyrics to The Beautiful Ones, Purple Rain and Strange Relationship. Listen to The Piano And Microphone Show where he told the world how deeply in love he was with her. Prince absolutely loved Denise and was connected to her on a very deep level. Just because Denise didn't have her family and friends in the Prince camp batting for her, saying certain songs were about her, doesn't mean there weren't many more deep seeded songs written about her. Susannah certainly had that advantage with her friends and family in the camp... Listen to the 1983 Piano and Microphone completion. That was put together in October 1983 after Denise recently left him. Many of the songs about him missing someone who'd recently departed his life. Purple Rain, Strange Relationship, 17 Days, Wednesday... Prince certainly had Denise on his mind throughout many of those tracks... In the song "Strange Relationship" a song that's confirmed is about their relationship, Prince even added the lyrics... "You've been gone too long." Even the author Duane Thudal gave a hint of acknowledgement in his book that Prince was trying to get over her departure. Give it up VioletCrush. Sussanah wasn't the only woman Prince loved. Stop trying to diminish all his other relationships to prove his love for Sussanah.

In the Susannah Melovin Interview thread, you asked me, why Prince would write a song like Possessed for Denise when he was spending time at Wendy and Lisa's apt in LA after the tour was over, hugging and kissing on Susannah? It's interesting that a month before that in April, Prince was going ballistic and losing his mind in public upon seeing Vanity with Adam Ant. (Which was a slap to him due to his cheating) When have you ever heard of Prince losing his cool like that?? In public...? Be perceptive in a compass other than Susannah. You shouldn't be surprised that in that situation and at that time, he was quickly trying to hook up with a new girl, but still writing songs with lyrics that said, "I wish I didn't need you, I wish I didn't care.." "You are like an animal running around Inside the cage of my heart. Aren't you due for a vacation, dirty liar?" Please provide the link where you heard that Prince started pursuing Susananh during the 1999 tour. There are so many proof of Susannah saying it was after the 1999 tour was over. I don't know why you're making things up and still persisting it was on the tour. No one has ever stated that. You yourself stated in a prior post that Susannah said it was after the 1999 tour. Would you like me to post your comment again?

Let's get one thing straight though, Prince was also loving, hugging and kissing, sending flowers for a year, and knocking at Sheila's e's door while in a relationship with Susananh.. Susannah didn't even get a chance to bask in the attention for long. Before day turned into night, who's door was he knocking at, but the one and only Sheila E... Working together and sharing Prince between them in the same space. Don't ever forget about Sheila. She too was also in a very serious relationship with Prince at the same time as Susannah. Along with Jill Jones, and multitudes of other women that she had to contend with up until the end. I thought we all knew this was Prince's M/O. Pointing out that he cheated on Vanity (after he saw her With Adam Ant, and they were already broken up, as per Allan Leeds) is rather laughable considering his track record with Susannah. You also said he didn't pay Denise.... Did he pay Sussanah? lol

However, he was not monogamous with her either - nor was he with any of the other women - most likely including his two wives. He conitnuously gave in to temptation.

Susannah certainly had that advantage... Listen to the 1983 Piano and Microphone completion. That was put together in October 1983 after Denise recently left him. Many of the songs about him missing someone who'd recently left his life. Purple Rain, Strange Relationship, 17 Days, Wednesday... Prince certainly had Denise on his mind throughout many of those tracks... In the song "Strange Relationship" a song that's confirmed is about their relationship, Prince even added the lyrics... "You've been gone too long." Even the author Duane Thudal gave a hint of acknowledgement that Prince was trying to get over her departure in his book.

There are so many proof of Susannah saying it was was after the 1999 tour was over. I don't know why you're making that up and still persisting it was on the tour. You yourself stated in a prior post that Susannah said it was after the 1999 tour. Would you like me to post it again?

Let's get one thing straight though, Prince was also loving, hugging and kissing, sending flowers for a year, and knocking at Sheila's e's door while in a relationship with Susannah.. Susannah didn't even get a chance to bask in the attention. Before day turned into night, who's door was he knocking at but the one and only Sheila E. Working together and sharing Prince between them in the same space. Don't forget about Sheila, who was also in a very serious relationship with Prince at the same time as Susannah. Along with Jill Jones, and multitudes of other women that she had to contend with. I thought we all knew this was Prince's M/O. Pointing out that he cheated on Vanity after he saw her With Adam Ant, and were already broken up, as per Allan Leeds, is rather laughable considering his track record with Susannah. You also said he didn't pay Denise.... Did he pay Sussanah? lol
[Edited 2/3/19 18:34pm]

I would imagine if Prince were so distraught over losing Vanity he would not have been taking every opportunity to fly out to LA to spend time with Susannah. That makes no sense whatsoever. I have no doubt that Prince was mad about Vanity hooking up with Adam Ant, because it made him look bad in the public eye. He was always concerned about his image and how he looked in the media. He put in a huge effort to be near Susannah and to get her to MN.
*
From what I understand about Sheila - per her interview with Questlove, is that Prince wanted her to record a solo album on his label. I have no doubt that he had that planned well before she finally agreed to join the camp. I'm sure, at least in the beginning, flowers were sent to persuade her to do the album. She stated she initially did not want to be a solo artist.
*
Jill Jones was a "side girl" from the begining - she started sleeping with Prince while he was with Vanity. Prince was rotating between the three women, plus more during the tours. Jill was moved to a NY apartment not long after the PR tour, and she remained a "side girl" until she finally left the camp in 1990.
*
We can go back and forth on this until the end of time, but the best evidence remains with the songs - Empty Room, Anotherloverholeinyohead, Forever In My Life, Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Wally, Cone Home...and I'm sure loads more.
*
Prince's m/o was having a "main girlfriend" while juggling multiple "side girls" - which he admits to in Forever In My Life - "juggling hearts in a 3 ring circus, someday will drive a body down to the ground"... So again, if you take that piece out of the equation and look at the songs then it's pretty clear how much he loved Susannah.

So again, if you take that piece out of the equation and look at the songs then it's pretty clear how much he loved Susannah.

Just to confirm Prince's time in LA prior to the end of the 1999 tour - per Duane Tudahl's book:

*

December 1982 - Prince films 1999 performance for Solid Gold - most likely after Susannah met him at the WB Christmas party, as she mentioned going with Wendy to watch them shoot the performance.

*

January 1983 - a month off from the tour which Prince spent in LA:

*

January 7-8 - Sunset Sound

Spent the weekend in LA

January 10th - Sunset Sound

January 13th - Sunset Sound

January 14th - Sunset Sound

*

February 8th - "Prince was originally scheduled to fly back to MN during a 3-day break from the tour, but instead he traveled to LA"

*

March 26-28 - Sunset Sound

March 31st - Sunset Sound

*

April 4th - Sunset Sound

April 14th - April 30th Sunset Sound

*

And per Duane's book, Jill, Susan and Vanity were all still living in Prince's house in May and June of 1983. Prince was still initimate with Vanity (especially while recording the song Vibrator per Jill Jones) and Jill was as well, so I'm not sure why he would have recorded the song Possessed with Vanity in mind during that time. Jill Jones on recording "Vibrator" Summer '83: "That was when we were all getting along! That was at Prince's house in MN, and it was right before the Purple Rain stuff started going, because Vanity hadn't left yet. We were all in the studio together, and it was easy to work because you could do your part and then go upstairs and make tea."

*

So, even during the time that Prince and Vanity were getting along he was pursuing Susannah. It had nothing to do with him "getting back" at Vanity.

*

In Susannah's recent interview with Toure she specifically states that Prince began staying at their house right after she met him at the Christmas party. He spent most of January in LA, so I'm sure a good portion of that time was spent at their house. He was in LA for a period of time every month from January to May of '83.

[Edited 1/22/19 12:15pm]

I 100% agree with you. I think he tried to get over Denise with flings with many other women and even 2 marriages. I think the marriages happened because he eventually wanted children. Sad it obviously wasn't meant to be. I can't help but wonder if Denise would have stayed with him, they married and had a family, if he'd still be here today. So tragic they both got caught up in drug use after the demise of their relationship, fortune and fame. I believe he's RIP in heaven with her.

I think this is just a ridiculous notion. Denise was in love with him, and would have stayed with him had he wanted her and no one else. SHE was the recreational drug user- not Prince. Have you listened to any of her later interviews? Her addiction to crack cocaine almost killed her. Prince was not involved in that at all, and would not have been able to maintain his recording and performing schedule had he been addicted like that. So, Prince wrote Forever In My Life for Susannah Melvoin while he was "getting over" Denise? You see how that makes no sense, right? He loved Susannah, however, she also left him, because he could not be faithful to her either. All of the women experienced the same thing. He could not be attached emotionally and he was not monogamous. Consequently, none of his relationships were sustainable.

It never would have worked between P & V. They were too jealous of each other for it to have ever worked.

Yes, he just wasn't geared toward monagamy, it's just the way he was. He seemed to always be open to the possibilty of meeting someone new even while married.

@violetcrush I don’t have the energy to read your book you posted in response to me correcting you, but I have to correct you about when Mayte Garcia first came to Paisley Park. It was December of 1990, and she made frequent trips there from Germany until she graduated from high school in spring 1991 when she ultimately moved there. Interesting to note, around the time of her first trip to Paisley he recorded an early version of “7” and pulled “She’s Just A Baby” out of the vault. You mention “Sex In The Summer”, the song where he says Mayte’s name at least twice. Yes, they were hanging out on the beach. His buddy was looking for the girls while Prince was yelling “where’s Mayte?”. That’s all I have for you. I couldn’t read the rest of your post. [Edited 1/26/19 10:58am]

Wow, okay so December of '90....one month prior to January of '91. Yes, it was such a "stretch" of the time frame there. Come on!! And AGAIN, she had not officially moved to MN at that point. Seriously, we all know the time frame for her arrival at this point. And she was a 16 yr old sending her belly dancing tapes to Prince for his enjoyment shocked Shame, shame on her Mother for forcing and brokering that situation. I have an 11 yr old daughter, and I get a pit in my stomach even picturing putting her in that environment at 16-17 yrs old. What the hell was she thinking?? Oh wait, I know.....$$$$$ KA-CHING mad Even her Mother would have read about Prince's reputation with women by that point.

Okay, so Prince pulling "She's Just A Baby" out of the Vault - a song he originally wrote for his girlfriend Susan Moonsie somehow signifies something special??? I would say it just mimics yet another young one he is bringing in to the mix.

Sex In The Summer:

Sex in the summer, getting it on
Give me that number, we can party all night long
Checking for bikinis, laying in the sand
Rub it like a genie, living while we can

[Verse 2]
Everybody's got a black book in case of emergency
In case the sun is shining at the beach and the honeys are out to play
The cool boys just a-watching all the pretty moves you make
Fronting in the sun, jamming for the one lover that you wanna take home

Sex in the summer, getting it on
Give me that number, we can party all night long
Checking for bikinis, laying in the sand
Rub it like a genie, living while we can

[Outro]
Sex in the summer, getting it on
Give me that number, we can party all night long
Sex in the summer
Sex in the summer
Get it on!
Sex in the summer
Right on!
Get it on!
Sex in the summer

Oh yes, it seems he really had Mayte on the brain during the writing of this song Yeah, I'm sure that was his focus while he's oggling the girls in bikinis and getting numbers lol

Look, I'm not saying that he did not care for or love Mayte. My point here is that she was no different than the others. If there hadn't been a pregnancy, I don't think there would have been a marriage.

Prince's discussion with a journalist for Time Out magazine in March 1995:

Aaaah.’ Big pause. He looks away. All right then. What about marriage, then? Any plans to singlehandedly put Durex out of business by having lots of little princes?

’Not really,’ smirks the compact sex symbol. ’I decided that things like family don’t have a big part to play in my future. I’m dedicated to music, to the point that I see all of life through it.’

[Edited 1/26/19 11:25am]

Sex in the Summer is absolutely about Mayte and their relationship. For f*ck's sake, this song opens w/Amiir's gestational heartbeat as the tempo for the song! Aamof, Prince Vault states that the original title was "Conception".

Read all about it here - http://www.princevault.co...The_Summer

This obsessive need to diminish Mayte and Prince's decade long relationship (pen pals, friends, employee/employer, lovers, husband and wife) in order to elevate another's is getting extremely tiresome.

And the ONLY woman he publicly proclaimed as his "true soulmate" (page 6 of the wedding program, and other interviews during the mid 90s).

Oh wait, I know.....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ KA-CHING mad Even her Mother would have read about Prince's reputation with women by that point.

Okay, so Prince pulling "She's Just A Baby" out of the Vault - a song he originally wrote for his girlfriend Susan Moonsie somehow signifies something special??? I would say it just mimics yet another young one he is bringing in to the mix.

Sex In The Summer:

*

Sex in the summer, getting it on
Give me that number, we can party all night long
Checking for bikinis, laying in the sand
Rub it like a genie, living while we can

[Verse 2]
Everybody's got a black book in case of emergency
In case the sun is shining at the beach and the honeys are out to play
The cool boys just a-watching all the pretty moves you make
Fronting in the sun, jamming for the one lover that you wanna take home

Sex in the summer, getting it on
Give me that number, we can party all night long
Checking for bikinis, laying in the sand
Rub it like a genie, living while we can

[Outro]
Sex in the summer, getting it on
Give me that number, we can party all night long
Sex in the summer
Sex in the summer
Get it on!
Sex in the summer
Right on!
Get it on!
Sex in the summer

Oh yes, it seems he really had Mayte on the brain during the writing of this song Yeah, I'm sure that was his focus while he's oggling the girls in bikinis and getting numbers lol

*

Look, I'm not saying that he did not care for or love Mayte. My point here is that she was no different than the others. If there hadn't been a pregnancy, I don't think there would have been a marriage.

*

Prince's discussion with a journalist for Time Out magazine in March 1995:

*

’Aaaah.’ Big pause.

Sex in the Summer is absolutely about Mayte and their relationship. For f*ck's sake, this song opens w/Amiir's gestational heartbeat as the tempo for the song! Aamof, Prince Vault states that the original title was "Conception". Read all about it here - http://www.princevault.co...The_Summer This obsessive need to diminish Mayte and Prince's decade long relationship (pen pals, friends, employee/employer, lovers, husband and wife) in order to elevate another's is getting extremely tiresome.

You're kidding right?? What else would he put in the wedding program - "woops, I got her pregnant and now we're rushing the wedding so the timing looks right'?? Come on!! A "decades" long relationship?? You should probably check with Carmen E, Nona Gaye, Lori ("Diamond"), Troy Beyer and countless others he was dating/banging from '91-'95. He was partying hard all through 1995, and as he stated that year, had no plans for marriage or kids.
*
Even with Emancipation - the song configurations had nothing to do with marriage or a baby through '95 and up until early '96. He added the marriage/baby songs when she got pregnant. Majority of the original configuration was "I miss you and want you back songs - look at all of the 1995 lists on princevault. The last song was set to be Goodbye.
*
Yes, the loss of the child was a tragedy for both of them, but let's not make a fairytale out of their relationship/marriage. He was moving on by 1998 with Manuela T. However, he also had just released The One and had to promote and sell that record - and "sell it" he sure did.
*
And no - he had TWO wives, not one. I think the most telling song he wrote about Mayte was Have A Heart. Yikes. I think that one pretty much sums it up. And listen again to Strange But True, which he wrote while they were divorcing.
