Sheila E in Krush Groove

What does everyone think about Krush Groove. I think Sheila did a pretty good job, considering it was her first starring role. I wonder why she never did any other movies? Did the film do well at the box office, what were the reviews like? The Fat Boys annoyed me tho and spoilt it.

I liked it and I thought Sheila did well too. She was my main reason for seeing the movie.

Krush Groove was directed by Michael Schultz who also directed The Last Dragon starring Vanity. Both were released in 1985. If u look on IMDB on Sheila's page Krush Groove is not included on her actress credits. WTF?

Hmm that's weird that it's not listed. I didn't know that the director also worked on The Last Dragon.

rock,rock,Hollyrock...everybody wanna Hollyrock...you say it! smile

Sheila was good in this movie, but it seemed as if this film was thrown together very quickly.Weak storyline and only a few truly great musical performances.

Pure cheese. Her casting was bizarre. Still love Sheila’s presence in anything.

I just saw it to see Sheila's performances and I liked RUN DMC as well. I seem to recall reading that Prince was unhappy with her love scene in the movie.

It would have been cool for a movie that surrounded Sheila E(and band) and maybe the Family or Mazarati in 1985.

I was a fan of the rap scene @ the time and Sheila E(Romance 1600) but I was weirded by the mix for the movie

I've always thought she was mimicing Prince with that voice. Reminds me of his 'old man' voice in Chloreen Baconskin. That's one of my favorite scenes though. lol

Excellent movie, especially considering the timeframe (1984-85). Hip Hop was growing into this major power. Run DMC, LL Cool J, The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, and I think Full Force was in this movie as well. Cult Classic!!

wasn't Prince planning something along those lines? I think The Dawn movie, which he was planning during that time, was gonna be Mazarati battling another band called the Coco Boys...or something like that smile

Sheila has a great screen presence. It's a shame that she never played Prince's love interest in a movie.

I've never seen it but to answer your questions:

It made 11 million from a 3 million dollar budget. So it was a very low budget movie to begin with and made very little money at the box office. But because of its low budget, it could be considered to be a reasonable success. Although direct to video movies have made more money.

Critically, it was far less successful. Mixed reviews that leaned more towards negative than positive.

I can only guess that she didn't do more movies because she's not a particularly good actress? Or maybe, more to the point, she's not an actress.

Love this movie. A perfect musical time capsule from that era.

.
It's there under "self", as she technically played herself in that movie.

Holly Rock.jpg

Holly Rock by Sheila E. is the sixth track (and only Prince-related track) on the movie soundtrack Krush Groove, the soundtrack album to the movie Krush Groove, and, nine months after the album's release, Holly Rock was released as the album's fifth single. The single didn't chart but it became a fan favorite and Sheila performed it regularly in her 1986 shows.

Initial tracking took place on 24 April 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA .

Prince also uses the term "Holly Rock" in Dream Factory, which was recorded later in 1985. Hollyrock is the name used for Hollywood in the TV cartoon series The Flintstones, which may have inspired the track.---PrinceVault

It's a fun scene biggrin one of the cool things about Sheila is that, she always seemed cool and down to earth...she had a good sense of humor and didn't take herself too seriously.

When the Dawn of the Morning Comes. I don't mean a battle of the bands type movie.

Sheila E and the Romance 1600 band and the Family should have had performance/little acting scenes in UTCM

yeah,it's kinda strange that Prince didn't use the movie (UTCM) as a way to promote his protege acts, like he did in Purple Rain. It's easy to imagine a few club scenes featuring Mazarati and Sheila E. performing.

Easily Prince and his band of avant garde musicians from the other side of the tracks...

Hired for Mary Sharons Day/Night birthday Party. High Fashion, A Love Bizarre, New Position etc

the spot where the 'bats' were could have been a club where Susannah's Pajamas was being played by the Family or a song from Parade or Dear Michaelangelo etc

so much potential in that movie

Was Holly Rock the only Sheila E single that didn't chart? It's my least favourite song by her as I am not a fan of rap music. A Love Bizarre I really like tho.

Not sure if it's the only Sheila E. single that didn't chart.

I like "Hollyrock",it's alot of fun,but probably not a good choice for a single.
