Pointless response. Alas, there are soooo many of those around these parts biggrin

Could it be it is because you cannot think outside the box?

Oh, I can assure you that I am an "out of box" thinker, but come on!! The majority of that song speaks to a romantic love, not a relationship between a guy and his housekeeper razz

And, here's food for thought - if it was such a "throw-away" song, and didn't mean much to Prince, why did it stay in his set list for the rest of his life??

Sorry. It is what it is. That is why so many of them felt weird and wrong at times, even Devin saying she had to pull away from Prince. Let's be real. It isn't derogatory, it's just the truth. Devin said he wouldn't even let her talk to the band members or Sheila E. Why do you think that is?

She did know. You think she didn't know after a point and then move away from Prince?

You think I'm dumping on Devin. I'm not dumping on Devin. I'm just trying to make this plain. That Prince was seeing multiple women 'juggling hearts like a 3 ringled circus' as he said, and you think it is respectful toward Devin?

Women need to understand how men can think, and compartmentalize relationships, sex etc women will turn on each other before they turn on the man. Like we've been seeing in the Prince world in the last few years. I don't think we have to 'turn on Prince', but people just need to be sensible and respectful.

“Wendy I’d like you to meet Devin, one of my side chicks I pump n dump while I’m also being perfectly respectful TO YOUR SISTER, the love of my life I’m being RESPECTFUL of.” He didn’t have a love of his life, not the way HE behaved.

So are you now being derogatory toward Prince now?

.

So everything you just said here backed my premise. If he was straight up to Sheila Jill Susannah Devin etc and said 'Hey I like you, I'm not looking to get married or hardcore dating, but I would like to spend time with you, we can see other people..." lots of men do this. Then it would have been a respectful endevour. Facts before Feelings. Then the person would be given honesty and empowered with info to make a choice, after that any hurt would be on them.

.

And didn't Toure ask if Prince was the love of HER life? not the other way around?

You asked why he didn’t introduce Devin to Wendy et al. My clumsy response was trying to answer that question. In what world would it have been possible to introduce her to his band? He’d be risking a whole bunch of his babes if he did that. I’m also trying to say Devin got just as much respect from Prince that the so called love of his life Susannah did, which was none.

So I used the wrong word way back when when I spoke of his treatment of
Devin, I should have said he treated her with deference, he tried to please her and looked after her in ways he didn’t have to. He was kind to her, he didn’t meet her just for sex.

I never said you said Susannah was the love of his life but if you read this thread you will find that being said.

I am coming to this interview late and am listening to some of her comments that do not jibe with what I have read in several books (The Rise and Fall of Prince, The Rise of Prince, DMSR etc).

Her account of asking her to marry him is different than what I have read in the aforementioned books. I think he said "I want you to be my wife" as a way of letting her down gently as it was determined she could not act well (Under the Cherry Moon) and needed to be replaced. I also read he sent her back (with Allan Leeds) to Minnie soon after they arrived in Paris (same day or next).

I do agree that she was important to him at one time, though.

I am concerned she is embellishing a bit.

She does have a mellodious voice, however.

And she was beautiful and had a nice figure but like you I think she is practicing selective memory at the very least. Some songs could have been written for her but we will never know for sure. Saying she was the love of his life is a different matter though.

Didn't she say he was the 'Lover Of Her Life'?

Yes she did. She clarified not just in a sexual way but he helped to shape her into the person she became. I thought that was very touching. You know, I always thought the fDeluxe song Lover might have been connected to him. That and Beautiful You smile

Can I say something? Susannah Melvoin is a back-up singer who may have co-written a few songs. She had a relationship with a prominent musician in her late teens, early twenties.

She is now in her late 50's. And??? I would be interested if she had made something of herself, but last I heard she was completing college in her 50's and in need of $. Sorry, but I think she is riding coatails.

I am now expecting these statements to get alot of hate from some. I am ducking...Good night.

Okay, I came up with the "platonic/housekeeper version of NC2U!!
Here goes one verse:
*
It's been so messy without you here
Like a stain without a mop
I went to the Doctor and guess what he told me, guess what he told me
He said boy you better learn how to do the dishes no matter what you do
But he!s a fool cause nothing compares to U!!

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, she was not just a backup singer for Prince. She was co-lead of The Family, and would have continued that if Paul Peterson had stayed. I think you must be unaware of the things she did after leaving the Prince camp. She contributed to and was part of W&L albums, she wrote with and sang in Seal's band (she's in his video for Newborn Friend. She wrote and sang for Doyle Branhall's band Smokestack. She was a backing singer on Roger Water's In The Flesh tour. She wrote Candy Perfume Girl on Madonba's Ray Of Light album. She co-wrote and is co-lead singer of fDeluxe and they have 2 records released.
*
Yeah, it sucks when your husband leaves you and you have two kids to support. A bit hard to travel around with a band when you have to take care of two kids. From what I understand she was having financial difficulties because her ex was refusing to pay her support. I can relate to her situation. It's not easy. I think it's great that she's trying to get a degree.
*
At any rate, Prince must have considered her important to his music, as she was the second person he thanked for contributing to his success at the 1995 AMAs. Vanity, Jill, and Devin D were not on that list.

He thanked more than thirty people that were in any band of his or were a musical inspiration and of course Muhammad Ali. He lumped Wendy and Susannah Melvoin together. Nothing more than a shoutout. Devin was never in his band and never worked for him for free so there would be no reason to thank her.

Quit bringing up Devin and we can move on? Thanks.

He named them exactly the way he named the others - by first and last name. So sorry, there was no "lumping" them together. Nice try at minimizing it though! I said they were the FIRST people he thanked - not the only. And he put them in front of all the other band members. So yeah, I'd say that is pretty significant.

True. I'm watching a show from 2014 right now and he just performed a very moving rendition.

Yes, it was always a moving performance when he played it.

*

I just remembered something else too. During the Nude tour 1990, didn't he lay himself down on a huge red heart that gradually went backward until he was laying flat after playing that song? I'll have to go back and look at footage again, but I seem to recall that.

What does any of this have to do with the interview with Toure exactly? What is the purpose outside of me seeing the same thing I've been seeing with the 'harem' attack mentality since Prince passed.

So I used the wrong word way back when when I spoke of his treatment of Devin, I should have said he treated her with deference, he tried to please her and looked after her in ways he didn’t have to. Again, you said he was 'respectful' and a whole slew of other terms toward Devin. How was he being 'respectful' toward Devin, if keeping her a secret or private like that? And in Prince's zone according to what he came up with family wise. He probably thought he was being respectful. But if you were put in that situation, how would you feel?
In the 70s 80s 90s moreso you hear a lot of songs about women settling and even being adversarial to the women, not the men.

.

I'll be the other woman
All your life
Just as long as I am the only one
Other than your wife
Your wife how would she feel
If she caught us together
The same way I would feel
if I caught you with another
Home I know comes first
And second to that Ill be
When you're not there with her
I want you right here with me
Ill be the other woman
Just as long as I know
I'm the only other woman
You make love to
Ill be the other woman
But Ive got to know
I'm the only other woman
You make love to

.

No Devin was a secret Susannah wasn't. Susannah lived in his house, helped decorate, entertained etc knew his family, he knew hers etc Same thing happened with Vanity.
