I think when Morris says the older ladies of the church liked his lil pimp look, I think he was talking about the older than him sexy ladies, not the old bittys that were drawn on the show. Lmao. What? |

You know I found all of these episodes on funk then watched the ones from season 1 and they’re so entertaining that I ended up watching and LEARNING about people outside my scope and circle I thought I’d never have interest in knowing about. That says a lot about this series. Also beyond the entertainment aspect, I felt the pain some of these people went through. It’s funny and deep too. Real life Is funny and painful. Those country one from season 1 are funny but pretty sad too.
Binge'n on them now |

There are many, many clips of it on YouTube. Just search the show title. There is one user who uploaded a bunch of clips early Saturday, about 2-minutes each on average. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Would've liked to know a lot more about the period with The Time and Prince... This series didn't offer up too much stuff we didn't already know... It was funny how they got The Bird dance from the Flintstones... |

One thing I did learn, is that Prince gave big breaks to a lot of folks who ended up flaking on him. |

The episode about The Time was too short to go into much detail. Jimmy Jamm and Jesse Johnson gave much more detail during their interviews with Questlove. I was hoping Morris would give his take on the infamous food fight, but I'm sure there was not enough time.
*
Morris's story about performing at PP in 2014, and his last conversation with Prince was very sad. So many stories of Prince reaching out to past associates around that time and up until his death.
*
It would be great to have a multiple part episode on The Revolution tours 1980-85. |

Yes, Morris's recollection of that night moved me to tears. I could just picture that scene. I hope that they do one with The Revolution too. |

I am so loving this series. Why isn't this thread on the main "Prince" forum....practically half the episodes so far have revolved around Prince.
I was surprised that Mike Judge states that the height of Funk was 1984.....maybe commerically...but honestly I don't think of Purple Rain as a Funk album....it was a crossover/rock/funk album...and the artist he lists Pointer Sister, Michael Jackson..were probably more R & B than Funk in my opinion...but that is minor matters. Cameo, George Clinton, the Gap Band and Zapp were still funking it up in the 80s, but quite a few groups like Kool and the Gang, Isley Brothers, and Commodores were transitioning to a more radio friendly r & b or pop sound. It seems like most of the 70s funk bands ddin't make to the 80s at all.
I get the impression from the show that Prince and Morris were never really that tight. It seems like the only thing they had in common was their love for music. Prince was the outsider in terms of talent, conviction and personality right from the beginning. |

i thought the "peak of funk" was a curious little phrase in the show, but the more I think about it, i'm not sure funk ever really had a peak, it was sort of always a little off to the center, that's where it came from for the most part. The bigger hits that I recall were huge on black stations but I can't see any white folk from that era recalling the names of those. the guys like Prince and Jackson were mixing things up enough to be called pop. |

I love the Isley Brothers.
I have awesome photos of them during a concert from the late 70's early 80's.

Those words never came out of his mouth.
What he said was that he was bothered that funk, along with the blues, bluegrass and folk, to the fringe in terms of the great American songbook. "It wasn't that long ago that funk was front and center in the popular culture. And if you need any proof, exhibit A: Morris Day and The Time."
So he introduced The Time, then references one of their songs. "You may recall their 1984 hit 'Jungle Love'." He then talked about how Morris became the frontman and funk's Zenith spotlight moment. That is not saying funk's height was 1984. It's saying that funk had a moment in the spotlight, the mainstream (which he lamented that it had never had a long period in earlier), in 1984. That's different from "the height of" something opposed to its Zenith moment; it's time to shine. Zenith is defined as "the time at which something is most powerful or successful".
So he was right in what he said, not the conjecture of the listener.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

I wonder what happened with that Morris Day solo album that was announced in 2017. I think Snoop Dogg was behind it, maybe as a producer or executive producer. Snoop had uploaded 2 of the songs on his channel. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

"knew the end was near". Good Lord, do y'all hear yourselves when you say shit like that? I know you're not morbid like that in person, surely not.
Let me give another POV on it, and it could happen with anyone: At some point in your life, you drop a lot of the fussin' and fightin' with your old friends, and just embrace them and let them know you love them; that you always did, and always will. The fact that it was the last time Morris saw Prince is irrelevant. He could have seen him again, and it been "the last time". That's just serendipity to good storytelling but it was nothing mystical or Prince literally planning his death in an elevator or whatever. Like Prince was just gonna go lay down and say "that's it, I hope the door is unlocked so someone can find me. Bye..."zzzzzzzz. C'mon. The end wasn't purposely near or inevitable. It was literally hours that could have saved his life. He had the urge to live and that was displayed by him seeking medical help for the addiction.
I told my mother I loved her a couple of weeks before she died (on April 21, btw), but I don't tell the story like "it was the last time I ever talked to her... she knew it was the end". No, we just had a moment. That it ended up being the last is a nice cap on it, but nothing mysterious was happening. Not with Prince & Morris either.
By the way, the whole episode is on Facebook.

Love The TIME, but all these dudes flaked on him big time. Morris while filming Purple Rain and after. JJ & Lewis who didn’t give him notice that they were creeping on him and left him and the band stranded. St.Paul who dicked him big time. love the guys, but they were big dicks. Lol
We all know he didn’t pay well, but they all flaked on him instead of being men about it. They pussyed out once they got the big break. |

Prince was mean in those years, jill tells a story of how Prince was beating Morris into shape, telling him how to act and Morris was crying because he was getting drilled so hard. He didn't pay well and maybe that's the biggest factor, but he was too overbearing and controlling, he didn't even like the success of the time, he said himself that he was scared of them. Morris had the drug issue which would have crippled the band no matter what, and Jesse wanted to be a star himself. Nothing that unusual, most bands do not stay together long, 3 years on average I guess. |

Sure but there are right ways and wrong ways to do things, he was an asshole just for the fuck of it a lot of the time. I don't really mean it judgmentally, i know he had his reasons aside from just being an asshole, the main one is that you don't always get things done being a nice guy. What hit single did morris run back to him over? Junglelove? Either way, like i said, bands don't last most of the time, control issues, personality clashes, substance abuse and the ever present meddling girlfriends ruin most bands at some point, on average about 3 years. the time had drug issues, jesse obviously wanted to be a frontman and jam and lewis didn't really need anyone, including prince. |
