That tour is where Prince and Jill met? Jill Jones who was singing backup for Teena Marie as the opening act, right? I wish they had mentioned Lady T. When I think of Rick I think of Teena, always. It just would have been especially nice.

Ts estate must have some block on them using her name. How can one totally skip all that?

Just finished bing watching and these are so freaking cool. They're informative and entertaining. Poor Rick James, may he rest in peace, but he really was jealous of Prince. I always thought that was an over exaggeration by fans of both but Rick's band members make it clear that it was real as hell.

I want to see the Fire It Up Tour!!!! I wonder if Rick James' Estate wants to make that money? wink

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

There is no such thing as a block to prevent her name being mentioned. Possibly her name never came up or if it did Mike Judge felt it didn't pertain to the episode.

Omitting Teena, is like omitting Vanity. People are still trying to make her daughter Rick's because that's how fans saw them, as soulmates. If she wasn't mentioned it was purposeful. And yes, her estate can stipulate not using her music for certain things, though I don't see any evidence of that.

I've always heard that about the Detroit show too. My older cousins said it was an off the chain Battle of the FUNK. I just need to see exactly what went down with my own eyes and ears before I am too freaking old to appreciate it. pout

It did kind of felt deliberate to me because hardly anyone mentions Rick's last days without mentioning him and Teena singing Fire and Desire that last time on the BET Awards.

i never believed that, not at that time, Rick had a solid live band that had a harder and blacker edge than Prince and what I've read in earlier bios were that the audiences weren't that crazy about him. Never ever heard that he stole the show which is damned hard for an opening act to begin with because no one comes to see them and they have limited time to play, usually a few songs. Rick was way more polished by that time, Prince had just bombed in his own hometown not long before, he didn't get his live act up to par until 1999 and even then, it has been confirmed how the time did steal the show from him. Prince wanted the image that he did and sometimes that costed him from a musicianship point of view.

You know what I never saw it until now. Er, not what I'd call their finest hour, but that isn't the only duet they've done together. Seems weird she was left out.

I watched it last night. Hilarious. The whole time I was watching it though, I just heard in my head, "RICK JAMES, BITCH." The part where the one commentator talked about how short Prince appeared to be made me laugh so hard though.

I did have some sympathy for Rick James, because of his unfortunate drug habbits and his sort of downfall from popularity in the music world.

You might find it hard to believe but if ppl that were there say it happened then I believe it. Prince kinda made the older funksters pay attenetion to him with songs like Sexy Dancer (extended version) & Head. He was funkin' & dancing like JB & still avoided the chitlin circuit & Soul Train & this is before Rick's bigger hits (which probably came from Prince's stolen equipment anyways). Rick was busy with stage props & mannerisms that was done by so many other artist. Maybe you should listen to the Fire It Up cd (lol)

your post points to why i don't believe it, people who are prince fans are naturally gonna say "ya he killed him" and ricks fans are going to say the same. Rick had You and i which was a monster hit for black folks, huge, bustin out was probably out by that point, his best was street songs which was a year or two away but he had plenty of great funk by that point and hits. the objective accounts I've read about it were generally that the black audiences didn't really know what to make of some dude in underwear but that some of his funkier stuff had em grooving, it's neither nor I don't think. Prince didn't get booed like he did at the RS concert or chickens and bottles thrown at him but he didn't steal the show either.

Just to add.. the shows with Rick James were before the Rolling Stones shows. Prince did not have his on-stage persona yet. Up to roughly the Controversy tour, he moved around the stage a bit like Mick Jagger (which to me is not a compliment). He got a lot better later on. Around the Parade tour he fully came into his own.

.

I like the tour bus show, but for all of the ones I've seen this far (season 2, the artists from season 1 don't interest me) the timelines are very muddled. The separate stories may be true, but the timeline is considered less important than telling an overall story. I can understand that, but it means that it is not a good idea to take more from this shows than anecdotes. Biographies these ain't.

There is a funny disclaimer before the show that people’s memories of things may be distorted by drugs and such...

I don't think Prince perfected his "JB" style of dancing until much later - toward the end of the 1999 tour and into PR tour. He was sort of all over the place with his dance moves from 1980-1982. The footage of the Dirty Mind and Controversy tours show that. Also, prior to 1999 he was performing to mainly a black audience. Dez Dickerson stated that he knew they were beginning to cross over after Little Red Corvette was released, and all of the sudden there was a "wave of white" coming at them from the stage.

I had to watch the bit about them looking for prince to come into the room
Several times it was so funny. My brother was at the Fire it up show
In Dallas they speak of, he was a huge Rick James fan.

Wouldn't it be great to see footage of one of the Prince/Rick shows from the tour? They had to have filmed some of them, right??

As well as faded (on my brothers behalf) but I would like to see it for myself.
