Did Apollonia even have anything to do with Prince after Purple Rain??

I have her on instagram.....and I know people complain about Mayte “riding on Prince’s coat tails”....but at least she can back it up. A marriage. A child. Apollonia is literally looking desperate on instagram lately. Every other post is prince related and she just completely sucks up the “ooh’s” and “ahhhs”. She’s really using him for attention and It’s sad. Pathetic. I try to scroll past her page as much as possible. She’s obviously very desperate for notoriety.

I'm going to say this as kindly as I can without being corrected or snipped by a moderator (which would be well within their rights to do), but you should really [Snip - luv4u]. You are randomly picking out a female to bash for the sake of doing so and it's sickening. Apollonia is a wonderful human being who has been married longer than most people any of us know who is in the same age bracket. She did remain friends with Prince after Purple Rain and her silence on him & not selling her story etc proves that (nda aside)

She doesn't need notoriety. She's fucking Apollonia. She was in Purple Rain, and you know who she is, so that says more than anything people know about you, other than your attempt at a shitpost about her. You think you have some exclusive right to judge who and who was not near to Prince? Perhaps we all missed that memo.

Lastly, no one is making you scroll to her page in the first place.

Just so you realize how out of place you are, perhaps you missed the artwork for "This Could B Us". [Snip - luv4u]

To be fair, she is coming across as slightly batty lately, sorry to say. I can't help but think she's paving the way for a book release( I've no problem with that) but she has been rather cryptic about some things. And she's been caught out by fans stating some flat out lies hmmm, not sure what to think of her really. I do get the impression she's attention seeking though.

I didn't want to comment on this but now I can't help but asking this burning question. If we go by what you said about Apples, isn't everybody who's giving Interviews about Prince, writes books or something like that, using him for attention? I mean, I don't give a damn what any of them do, 'cause I think everybody has the right to talk about their time with him (if they tell the truth but I guess we can never be so sure about that, right?).

I find it ironic too that she trashed Mayte for writing the book and then she does the same, but you know what, I don't care enough to make a thread about who's more in a position to talk about Prince. Like, come on, she was in PR! All these people had something to do with Prince, they knew him and honestly, they are the only ones who can talk about these times now. What do you want to do? Gather a Jury who decides who's authorized to talk and who's not? Ridiculous.

Right. Appollonia was a direct part of Prince's rise to superstardom with Purple Rain. She has history with him, as do all of the other associates, friends, girlfriends, etc who are sharing their past and stories of times spent with him. They remained friends throughout his life. Pretty sure she was a special guest at one of the more recent PP concerts prior to his death. Susannah Melvoin, in her interview with Toure, stated that she called Apples after the plane went down in Moline to see if she had heard anything about his condition. They clearly had an ongoing friendship.

Curious about the statements she made that were found to be false? What were the things that she stated?

Yes, it has been written that they had to work with her quite a bit on her voice, but remember, she was not a singer to begin with - she was modeling and trying to get into acting (and her acting was very average as well - she was chosen for PR mainly for her look). The singing was thrust on her for the film and the Appollonia 6 album. I don't think she did too bad of a job considering the situation. Her singing was very amateurish, but she played her role well - although it's been said they would do several takes of a scene before she got it right. Vanity also had a very average voice, but her appearance and charisma on stage made up for the lack of talent with singing. She even stated in interviews that she was not originally trying to get into singing, and she felt she was not a good singer. Prince convinced her to sing in order to form Vanity 6. Sheila too. Sheila stated she did not want to be a lead singer in a band - she wanted to play drums. Prince, again, convinced her to be a lead singer along with playing drums.

*

Common thread in this....clearly Prince could have sold an Igloo to an Eskimo. He was quite convincing, and he helped to make all of them successful at singing for a period of time - however short or long.

Several things, including stating that P was twice refused a star on the Hollywood walk of fame(fans refuted this, apparently P never wanted one) She got into a social media argument over that one. She also said she inspired Manic Monday after telling P about a dream she had about Rudolf V. Whereas Jesse Johnson states the song was originally for V6, predating her. She also claims he got his love of Yorkies from her. She's just sounding a little desperate lately. I don't understand what she's trying to prove.

Not sure about the Hollywood star or the Yorkie stories, but Manic Monday was recorded in Feb 1984 and intended for the Appollonia 6 album - long after Vanity 6 was over. The filming for PR had also been completed, with the exception of re-shoots that were done in LA. I believe the song Take Me With You was also originally slated for the A6 record, but Prince took that one as well.

From princevault.com:

Basic tracking for Prince's original version took place on 4 February 1984 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (the day before recording Ooo She She Wa Wa), a day after basic tracking for A Million Miles (I Love You) and In A Spanish Villa); the song was intended for Apollonia 6 (as a duet between Prince and Apollonia), and was included as the third track on the 29 February 1984 and Spring 1984 configurations of the Apollonia 6 album, but was withdrawn from the album prior to release.

It was offered to The Bangles after Bangles singer Hoffs Susanna Hoffs allegedly asked Prince to provide material for their next album. It is likely this happened when both were recording at Sunset, the Bangles doing I Got Nothing for 'The Goonies' OST, in April 1985.

*

The story that I have read about Manic Monday - stated by Engineer Peggy McCreary, who recorded the song at Sunset Sound studio with Prince - is that after working most of the night Prince told her she would only have to come back the next morining to record if he had a song idea overnight. The next morning he called her to meet him at the studio at 9:00am, because he had "dreamed" of a song the night before. That song was Manic Monday. Peggy stated she was really pissed off about having to go back to the studio after working most of the day and night before. Prince said, "well, I told you if I had a song you would have to come back, and I dreamed this last night".

*

So, it is somewhat possible that Appollonia played a role in the idea for Manic Monday, because she was fully in the mix at this time. Could have come from a conversation they had, or some other event with her.

*

It is clear though that they remained in touch off and on throughout the years.

Apollonia is a sweet and beautiful woman who co-starred with Prince in one of the most successful musical drama films of all time. Purple Rain is iconic and the people who slate Apollonia can' do one'.

She can post whatever she likes on her Instagram/Facebook/Twitter pages. flipped off

Well.....let's not get carried away here.....posting "anything she wants" is a bit much; however; posting accurate and honest anecdotes about her time with Prince is certainly welcome - which I am sure she has done.

*

Yes, her inclusion in PR played a sizable part in the success of the film, although Prince, Morris and Jerome had more to do with the success - and the live performances played the biggest part.

No, it's not. She can post anything she wants. Anyone can.

The difference between her and most of us is that she met, worked with & stayed friends with Prince (the latter of which is the point of the original shitpost by the OP).

Stop acting as if you're some gatekeeper of Princedom. There's always an unfollow button if you don't like her Instagram. I rarely come to the org anymore because there's always someone trying to act like people can't do this and that. Prince is a common connection point between her and most of her followers and some of her close friends, so of COURSE she's going to express her connection point. It's not living off of someones coat tails. Its her effin life.

Change it one more time..

Yeah, no kidding. Anyone can post anything they choose; however, if it's found to be false, or exaggerated or ridiculous that doesn't really bode well for the poster in terms of how they are perceived by the public - or in the case of a well known person - their fans/followers.

*

As I said in one of my prior posts, I think it is doubtful that Appollonia would post a false story regarding her time with Prince - even if her perception or memory of an event is different from what Prince's may have been, I"m sure her recollection is coming from an honest place. I also stated it is clear that she maintained contact with Prince off and on throughout the years until he passed.

Was she invited to any of the memorials for him? And I guess I haven’t seen her name on any of the April celebration lists? And I was at the Prince tribute concert in St Paul ..she wasn’t part of that either. Weird. I would just assume anyone that was as important as you guys say she is....would be at all or at least a couple of these things. wink

She was on a panel with Jerome, Jill Jones, Bob Cavallo, Albert Magnoli, & others; one that was talked about extensively here.

She doesn't have to be at every event to have a valid experience or story. It certainly says more about you, fighting so hard to dismiss her friendship & experiences with Prince, than it does anything you say about her.

I didn’t question her friendship with Prince. Read my post again. I asked if they were still friends later on. Valid question. Just as many have asked about others. My whole point is her instagram is desperate anymore. And yes I quit following her cause I literally started feeling sorry for her... as some others said the same thing in her comments. And trivial pursuit or whoever you are.....you act like you know her so well. How did you meet? Do you spend quite a bit of time with her? Just wondering cause you keep telling me I can’t assume things or have an opinion because I don’t “know” her. Well...do YOU??? But then again as freakishly defensive you are...I’m starting to wonder if you ARE her!?!?

ksl1974 - Prince and Appollonia were definitely friends through the years. However, like most of his past associates, I'm sure there were long periods where they had no contact. I believe she was a special guest at his January 21st P&M Gala concert at PP. She was sitting up on stage with him. He was reaching out and spending time with many of his past associates not long before he died.

*

I don't know for sure, but I'm going to guess that you were either too young to have experienced Prince's music and rise to superstatus when it was happening from 1980-1988?? It's a great nostalgic and important time for those of us who were fans then (I was at teen), and a very special time for Prince himself. He kept in touch (off and on) with many of those who were close to him during those years.

*

I think Trivial's frustration stems from some fans, especially those who are younger and may not understand the importance that some of the associates played in Prince's life, making assumptions about or accusations toward people who played a major role (no pun intended!) in his life. Prince always moved on with his music, associates, relationships, etc..but he did remain in contact with many from his past. Appollonia attended Vanity's memorial along with Prince, Jill Jones, Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie. They all spent time together there.

*

It's tough for those of us who have been fans since the early 80's, because sadly we all won't be around too much longer mad So, hopefully many of these associates will write their stories - some already have - to clarify their time with him through the years.

Nailed it.

And PS: when those of us who have been around since the late 70s or early 80s as a Prince fan, take our word for it. We're not a bunch of old coots with random opinions. We've been around longer and have a wider perspective on it all. We've met some of these people, we've talked to them, we have seasoning on the steak. If you ask a question, ask it, but don't interject the subtle vitriol or hatred toward these people because you simply don't understand the whole story about them. (It's what racists do as well; just sayin'.) And read the answers, understand where they are coming from. Those of us who were teenagers when Purple Rain or 1999 came out, we lived it. We lived the mall hair, shoulder pads, the world was purple (and wearing a sequined gloved, too). It was a wonderful, magical time. To think that Apollonia did not remain friends with Prince over the years - the same man who we hear about being loving and charitable to people and organizations - is sort of ridiculous.

Never said I hated her. Please find in my posts where I said that. Oh wait..you can’t cause I never said that. My main thing was she’s acting weird and desperate on instagram. But you putting words in my mouth...let alone now insinuating I’m a racist??? You’re playing with Fire there. Takes away all credibility you have. As it has been said here “if you don’t like something scroll past it”. Perhaps you should do the same. And don’t call me a racist again. (And yes.....you did).

Quite honestly...I’m actually probably older than you based on a few things you said here. I was about ALL his early music. It’s all we listened to in the early 80’s. And I have never stopped listening to him. Because I say someone’s instagram account is seeming odd lately. And yes, that’s she’s desperate for attention....now all of a sudden I’m spewing hatred and a racist???(see trivial pursuits post) If anyone needs to calm down it’s most definitely not me. A simple post about Instagram turned into me being called a racist and that I hate her??? Wt*??..... “Just sayin”.

He was reaching out and spending time with many of his past associates not long before he died.

It's tough for those of us who have been fans since the early 80's, because sadly we all won't be around too much longer mad So, hopefully many of these associates will write their stories - some already have - to clarify their time with him through the years.

Wt*??...... “Just sayin”.

Well, these days it seems I'm usually older than everybody, so if you are actually older that makes me feel better smile

I hear what you are saying, but my thing is this - none or most of us on this site never knew Prince on any personal level, or spent any time with him. Appollonia was a major part of his blockbuster movie and his most (commercially) successful period. She has spent many many hours with him - back in the 80's, but also more throughout the years, however scattered.

I know we as fans are entitled to opinions, and are free to make assumptions about his experiences with his associates (as I've done on occasion), but at the end of the day we were not the people in his life, and we're just guessing on these things.

Given that didn't have a falling out and that her solo album was on WB, I've always wondered how come they didn't ask Prince for at least one or 2 songs. The album would have been better of with a few Prince tracks.

My guess would be that, based on the recording he did with her for Appollonia 6, he was not interested in contributing to a new record smile She really was not a singer. From what I have read there was a lot of backup help (Jill, Susannah) for her vocals on the A6 record.

I don't think so. I am not aware of a single occurence of Prince declining to give a song to another artist before 1994 (after which he most likely didn't want to anymore because of masters ownership, though it's never been confirmed but the sudden disappearance of Prince as a songwriter/producer for other acts seems to indicate it). Prince would give away songs to anyone who'd ask them between 1984 and 1993, including some pretty low level acts or acts whose work had little to nothing to do with his. The royalties generated by it were a significant source of income for him.

Right, but I always thought - with the exception of WB giving NC2U to Sinead without his approval - that he offered songs to people of his choice, like Sheena, The Bangles, Madonna, Joe Cocker, etc. I would think he would pick and choose who he wanted to have the songs at any given time. For instance, I read that he gave his song Van Gogh (originally titled Love Is by Sandra St Victor) to the group Van Gogh (and I guess he re-named the song with them in mind), because he wanted to give a song to a musician with a disability (per princevault.com). So, I'm not sure how random those choices were.

Paul Peterson stated in an interview that when he talked to Prince about Sinead's cover of NC2U Prince said he didn't like the cover. Paul commented on the big check he got for it, and Prince said he didn't care about the money. I'm sure that money came in handy for him during his downturn in the early 90's, but he seemed to care more about the music and how it was done.
