Yes, I do think the "Dream Factory" compilation and period was a very wonderful time for them, but I have to say that I think this song in its entirety was inspired by Prince's anger with Paul leaving the camp and The Family.
*
The fact that he sings the chorus to this song in the middle of Mutiny at the March '86 1st Avenue show is another big indication. He has the backup guys (Jerome, Greg, Wally) chanting, "St Paul, punk of the month!!" as well, and Prince literally calls Paul out during the song (Paul, you out there? If he is, he's lookin' for them car keys now!")

I only more recently saw this show on video, and when they performed Mutiny I was like, whoaaaa!! Prince was really pissed off!!!
Wow. Sounds like he was! That's interesting that he sang the chorus of "Dream Factory" during Mutiny with the chants. Seems that he was aiming the whole song at Paul. I'll have to track down that show!
Oh, yes it is a major attack on Paul during that song! He also says, "Paul! you took - did you give?" Poor Paul. The guy was just trying to make a living and make it in the business, and Prince wasn't promoting The Family record |

That's true. Sounds like he really was upset with him, or he at least wanted to give that impression. |

That show was not long after Paul had left, so ti was all pretty fresh at that point. Also, I believe Paul was there that night, which would have given Prince more incenttive to verbally bash him. |

Oh okay. From what Prince was saying, he probably was in the audience. I wonder if he may have just been poking some fun at him? |

Listening to and watching the video, it was more than just poking fun. He was "calling him out" so to speak - throughout the entire song. You have to see the video. He got the entire audience to chant the "St Paul, punk of the month!" rant - over and over. You know it's bad when Prince is taking that much time during a show to rant! lol.
*
He also called out Jimmy Jam a couple of times. During Controversy, he sang the line, "what have you done for me lately" - it actually fit really well with the music! Jimmy and Terry had just come out with Janet's hit album - such a great one!! What Have You Done For Me Lately and Nasty climbed to the top of the charts by that Spring/Summer. During one of their new songs, Prince said, "Jimmy Jam, I don't wanna hear this on your next record!" Seems he was lashing out that night |

Wow! He must have been in quite a mood that night! I remember him playing "WHYDFML" at some of the W2A shows,I believe and asking the audience who wrote it? lol

Could be. I thought he might have been saying that they copied his sound. |

Yes, that's more what I meant. Jesse Johnson has talked about this as well. When he was working with another group while with The Time, he said he was very careful not to give their "bass sound" away. But really, any skilled musician can usually eventually figure out the sound if they're not using tech tricks to get the sound. |

Yes that's true. I always thought that "WHYDFML" has the classic Minneapolis Sound and I think that may have been what Prince meant by the comment. |
