Danger in not releasing vault songs? - 'borrowing' of ideas from band members? Colour ne HUUUUGELY CYNICAL.......
Now that the NPG & the I believe the Revolution [?] & likewise Judith Hill etc are starting to record or starting to release stuff this question NEEDS to be asked. Prince & all of these artists jammed & recorded constantly, as we know most of it is locked away in the vault. Surely there is a temptation from associated artists to 'borrow' a lick here, a lyric there or even a whole melody? I listended to Judiths last single Pepper Club & the Q's started floating around in my mind. The stupidity & incompetence of the estate & all involved in the vault has left themselves wide open to abuse. Thoughts on this wildly speculative & cynical thread are more than welcome!..also...if you were an ex-band mate & felt unrecognised/cheated when working for P....would you be tempted?!

The minute I heard The Way You MKe Me Fell...I knew that P had at least some involvement. As to how much, who knows. She’s tight lipped, but I can’t help but wonder...is she respecting his wishes or watching out for her cashflow? So yes I believe they will all take whatever pieces,guitar licks,bass & synth lines, vocal hooks. It may not always even be intentional...it will happen though. I believe that Tyka P tribute song was done in that manner also.

His influence lives on in other people's music - I don't see it as a problem or a danger.

This is a ridiculous idea. Here's why:
2) stealing stuff is illegal and the estate can come after their ass;
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

not really of the point made in this thread topic. Influence is obvious..I am talking about 'taking' from work that was laready done & is locked away.

re Point 2 - estate is so disorganised i highly doubt they would have a clue as to what was taken. re Point 3 - the bands are milking this "we want to keep the legacy alive & tour" BS for 2 years & will continue to do so...they want payback for years of not being rewarded or recognised.

Will also make the point that from a commercial POV the estate need to get that vault locked down & in serious order & fully copywritten to avoid the obvious.

so are you suggesting that the estate should simply release everything in the vaults as a way of stopping former bandmembers from "stealing" ideas? Sounds kinda extreme,dontcha think?

Clearly not. What tyhey need to do for their own self protection is to copywrite as much as possible if its not already been done. This includes proper writing credits, notating all the lryics , music etc. Lock that mother down!

How about Chaka Khans plan to release stuff they did together...I am sat here listening to her damn funky new song [LIKE SUGAR]...purple vibes all over it!

I hadn't thought of the possibility of them doing that. I'm noticing a lot of his influence in some of the associate's new music as well.Especially Judith's "Pepper Club" and Ida's new song a bit too.Nik West's song snippet"Cotton Candy pt.1" from her EP Say Something also sounds very influenced by Prince but I think that was recorded in 2015. I wondered if he may have had some involvement with it.

The question, IMO, does not really need to be asked. You seem to be whipping up drama over nothing.

no intention to whip up a frenzy, just a topic worthy of consideration. OK forget licks..how about a straight up copy of a full song?!
