I haven't read the article, but I was struck by the quoted bit--is there anyone (really) to whom Jill is "known as the actress whose character... was sweet on 'The Kid'" who doesn't know about her musical career? That seems pretty unlikely to me. People who don't know she's a singer aren't sitting around going "Man, remember that Jill Jones actress? The one with that little part in Purple Rain? I wonder if she ever did anything else." If people know she's in the movie, they know the rest, too. It's almost like saying "Anthony Mosley is widely known for brief snippets of dancing during crowd scenes in the movie Purple Rain, but what some might not know is he did a bunch of rapping on Prince records in the early 1990s, when he worked as a member of the New Power Generation."

Now I'll read the article, but I got to say that intro doesn't promise much.
