Okay, this is the first thing today that actually made me cry a little bit. Why can't he just come back? One of my future plans was meeting him and thank him personally for what he did for me during one of the hardest year of my life! And I'll never get to tell him that.
Rest in Heaven Prince and Happy Birthday (I know you didn't celebrate, but I am so grateful for this day, because you were brought onto this world on this day). I will always miss you.

Honestly, it made me cry too. I am a bit embarassed but it was probably the biggest cry I have had this year where Prince was concerned. The other times when I read tough stuff, I was just angry or stressed. This time it was like catharsis.

And here is Sheila's tribute...much lighter. I enjoyed the headlock story. I know she ain't that popular right now with some people (and I have complicated feelings as well) , but just remember people are complicated and handle loss/fame differently. I am going to try to remember that.

Yes, they are two people, but have always been fused with their music. Always partners from a creative standpoint. Hence, "Wendy & Lisa" with just about everything they do musically... |

But Lennon and McCartney were only together musically during the The Beatles years, and were always competitive. They were very much separate, and often contentious with each other after that time. I think Lisa and Wendy pen their own songs, but they have usually always collaborated on the instrumental piece for their music. |

I only linked them together on this thread because they both did instrumental minimalistic tributes to P on his birthday. I added sheila because I didn't want to start another thread. Don't think too deeply about it. W and L are usually linked but this time that is not why I did it.

Purple - Wendy and Lisa have ALWAYS made music together - even their scoring work has been as a team. Yes, they may actually pen lyrics separately, but the instrumental for songs is always done together - with the exception of Lisa's piano solo pieces. When they did the Carnegie Hall tribute to Prince (with Questlove, D'Angelo, etc...) Susannah was asked to play with The Family. She asked Wendy and Lisa to go. Wendy told her, "well, Lisa doesn't want to do it, so I don't think I want to go without my creative partner there with me". Susannah said she somehow convinced her to go anyway. They usually never perform without both playing. |

Why didn't LIsa want to do the Carnegie Hall tribute. Was she mad at P?

Not sure of the specific reason. Susannah just said, "Lisa didn't want to do it". Could be based on ill will at that time. I know that they had received a "lawyer letter" about interviews they had done in the 2009/2010 time frame. Also, when they went over to London to do the Brit awards with him in 2006 they said it was not a good experience. Prince essentially ignored them, and did not interact with them at all - like, did not speak to them. He also gave the stage spotlight to the dancers and kept W&L in the background.
*
In Susannah's interview with Toure, she did say that she felt Prince had missed Lisa for years, and Lisa didn't "play" - as in, she didn't go for the "mind games". She said Lisa felt that he had to make an effort to be there for them too - had to go both ways. So, I don't think they talked for many years. |

I read about the 2006 stuff but I only read about them not getting the spotlight and nothing about him ignoring them in rehearsal, etc. I listened to Toure's interview with Susannah. She did say that P missed LIsa and would have probably been better if they had more contact but she did't say anything that I recall about LIsa being againt his "mind-games" or stating that he had to be there for them too.. Although I do remember a more diplomatic statement from Susannah about LIsa saying that if he wanted help or whatever he was going to need to ask for it or establish contact.

During the Toure interview Susannah said, "I think he missed Lisa for years, but Lisa wasn't playing. She said, he's got to be here too" That comment was made during the time that Susannah said she thought that Lisa, out of the three of them, could have convinced Prince to go to rehab.

For the Brit performance, it wasn't just about the spotlight. They said Prince had nothing to do with them when they were there, which is strange, because Wendy said when she played with him on the Tavis Smiley show it was like old times with him. She said she was hugging him and telling him how much they loved him, and he was very kind and sweet to her. Go figure....mind games. [Edited 6/14/18 18:52pm] |

I just didn't remember the quote that "Lisa wasn't playing". But you might be right. I do remember them saying something about Prince not planning for their time in the spotlight in 2006 (something to that effect, but nothing other than that.). But you also could be right. But I will say something else. After Prince died, i searched back through the Wendy and Lisa Twitter page, and they had a tweet in 2011 stating that they spent some time with Prince one particular night that year and they had a nice time(at a club of some kind I believe) . I am not sure if the "they" included Lisa because the twitter page might be more Wendy than LIsa. But it was in the plural sense. So, I think Lisa and Prince have probably talked since 2006. I also remember Lisa (after Prince died) stating that at some point he was talking to them about their writing music for tv scenes and asking questions about it possibly in a studio.
I do think Lisa has some regrets because she took a hardline approach with Prince. (she stated something about regrets in an interview after he died and said that he died because he was afraid to show vulnerability --presumably around her.) But she did what she thought was right at the time. YOu can't call her an enabler...that's for sure. I know she hadn't been in Paisley Park for quite a few years. So, it sounds like any time she saw PRince one on one, it was always in L.A when he came to see her.or they worked on something. I don't know===maybe she disliked the bubble-like enviroment of Paisley park.
Edit__I just found the interview when she stated that she had regrets and had seen him in L.A while she was working in her studio..I don'tknow the year that would have been though..... Another thought...is it possible that she knew P wouldnt come to the Carnegie hall tribute so didn't see the point of coming herself...Just a thought.

Yes, I was hoping both Wendy and Lisa had spent some time with Prince at some point after 2006. I"m sure it was in LA. He had homes there, and traveled out there quite a bit. Oh wait, I know he saw Wendy after 2006, because he had asked her for Susannah's phone number to call her about The Family's new record (which Susannah said did not go well), and I had read that Prince asked Wendy how Susannah was doing at some point after Doyle left her. So yes, I think they all were in touch off and on until maybe a couple of years before he passed. In the interview with Toure, Susannah stated "everytime I would see him after I had my kids he would always ask to see pictures of them".... |

I do really think by 2013/14 he was making sure he reached out to or re-connected with certain people who meant something to him through the years. The thing that really blew me away was Susannah stating that he had his Engineer call her and he sent her lyrics 2 weeks before Molene. Wow. |

Go back to reply 19. I edited it and added a link to a LIsa interview. It was her who stated that P came to their studio while they were making music for a tv show..that was the last time, they phyiscally saw each other but she didn't say what year that was. I know they have done shows throughout the years but Shades of Blue was more recently (debuting in january of 2016 and Nurse Jackie's run was 2009 to 2015.

Oh geez, heart-wrenching. I hadn't read that particular article. My guess is that she saw him prior to his appearance really deteriorating - maybe some time prior to 2013-2014. So glad they had a special moment and a good hug. So, so sad |

Right! Well, Susannah is the twin, but Lisa is 100% her sister from another mister

Funny - they had a group shot for one of their albums in the 80's with Wendy, Lisa, Susannah, Lisa's Sister Cole, and their drummer Carla - very hard to tell them apart. They all looked so much alike back then... |

Lisa is fantastic, and Wendy really is too. Wendy gets a lot of flack, because she is outspoken and likes to talk. They are a great balance for each other, because Lisa is just naturally more quiet and introspective. If Wendy didn't have smart and interesting things to say I agree she would be annoying, but I always enjoy listening to her, and/or reading her interviews. She is candid, smart, and passionate about music and telling her stories. I would love to see a book from W&L too |

ALMOST FORGOT TO ADD: Thanks for posting <3

Yeah I agree Wendy do get a lot of flack because she is outspoken. So is Susannah LOL. Man they both curse like storms on their social media accounts and interviews LOL but I don't mind that makes them edgy. They both are California hippie liberals and as a person of color myself, they are good allies to social issues that I care about.
Lisa I think she somewhat opens up more over the last decade since I am one of her friends on her social media Facebook page. I always thought she kind of goofy and cryptic but in a good way. She brings the humor side and quirky side. She also tends to open up more during recent interviews but you are right Wendy is always going to be the outspoken one.
But I like both of them. |
