If Anna really co-wrote this, I find it pretty incredible that Prince would not only remove her share of royalties from the copyright notice but, adding insult to injury, give it to Carmen instead!

.

This seems to confirm that Carmen never wrote a line of lyrics on her album and only received royalties as a "gift" from Prince.

.

It's really super cool of Anna to share this. biggrin hug

Love it.

Surprised about the few sentences in Dutch.

@2.32 *undeciphrable*.. tot morgen, dan krijg je wat koffie. En als je het helemaal opdrinkt mag je met me naar bed. eek

Which translates into: ... untill tomorow, you'll get some coffe. And when you finish it [drink it completely], you can sleep with me.

This version has some lyrical differences to Carmen's so Anna may be responsible for those.

For the record, Anna texted me before she uploaded it and wasn't sure if she should include the phone conversation.

I told her that she should - it gives context. Jill Jones agreed and said the same.

Prince did know the call was being recorded, by the way. The idea was - back when they did the song - that they might use bits of the phone calls in "Behind The Scenes" promotional stuff, and perhaps the music video they intended to make. Not too dissimilar to this - except the project never went any further than this.

So, please don't take it as an invasion of privacy or anything like that. Prince did know, and he recorded many of his own calls himself too. And even despite that, Anna was concerned about whether it was the right thing to do and consulted with me and Jill for our thoughts.

She's a lovely person and I'm so happy she's put this out there. It's part of her story.

Thanks for the insight and history on this!

This sounds like a song he would have written for Vanity 6/App 6 which had very sexy image. Anna had a wholesome image and her writing lyrics like this at age 17/18? Did they write the lyrics together?

Also, if she did write them on her own and he didn’t give her any writing credit, that’s cold.

The only good thing about this song is P's voice at the beginning and at the end.

Sweetness.

It's funny how near everyone hates that song.

.

Regardless of who sings it, it clearly doesn't work for 2 reasons:

.

One is that Prince usually wasn't convincing when he tried to emulate this europop techno sound (something he tried on different occasions from 1989 to 1999): there wasn't much he wasn't good at when it comes to emulating a genre, but he wasn't good at that.

.

The other, maybe most important one is that the verses' melody plays against everything the song stands for. That melody manages to evoke both a nursery rhyme and a miltary chant at the same time, in either case something very mechanical, forced, totally artificial and somewhat agressive that totally goes against the message of sensuality the lyrics and the chorus' melody are trying to convey. That's actually weird because if there's something P knew how to do it was being sensual and composing sensual melodies, but in that case it falls completely flat (edit: I saw later on the YT liner notes that the melody is apparently Anna's, who was 16 or 17 at the time she composed it, so I think it's safe to say what I say without being disrespectful). No matter who sings it, a man can't possibly want to go to bed with a woman singing those verses lol lol lol

.

Nevertheless, as every Prince composition, there are cool little ideas here and there, and I must say that I find Anna's version vastly cooler than Carmen's. There's not that different though, but Anna manages to give at least some sensuality to those impossible verses, maybe just because she obviously doesn't take it as seriously as Carmen did (or was instructed to by Prince, I don't wanna blame Carmen for her record's artistic direction because it clearly was under P's control), and it works better with a dose of second degree. And the instrumentation is a little more in the vein of that really interesting, experimental industrial funk sound P had in 89, while the Carmen version was somewhat polished to be more in tune to the sound of the early 90's.

.

So, well, it's not something I'll listen to every day but it's a really pleasant discovery, and I truly look forward to hearing the other songs Anna wishes to share from that project, to see what kind of shape it was taking. I really wish I knew why it was shelved.

.

The phone calls are, of course, the loveliest thing and a real, moving homage. I'm really grateful Anna chose to include them and that Militant and Jill supported that decision. They truly honor Prince's memory nod

.

p 149 During a conversation in mid-1988 with Anna Garcia... he said that he had achieved a lifelong ambition to be a magician. "I do it all the time - I snap my fingers and food appears." he said "Whatever I want to happen happens."

Garcia, while not on the payroll,..

Garcia resented the manipulations and felt as if Prince were trying to turn her into a different person.

She was also anxiously waiting for the materialiization of the side project he had promised her. One evening when they were relaxing in an Amsterdam hotel room, Prince posed an odd query, asking what Garcia's name was. Realizing that Prince was about to choose her stage name, she responded that he must know. He then sat down at a piano and began playing.

"Of course I know your name," he said. "It's Joy Fantastic"

Garcia had had enough and moved back to London in early 1990. Prince stayed in touch by phone, but Garcia found herself less and less interested in his musings, which rarely touched her interests. Little had been accomplished on the Anna Fantastic project during her stay in Minneapolis; Prince had too much else to do and seemed unable to focuson on it. They did collaborate on a song called 'Fantasia Erotica," which Prince woujld later use for an album featuring Carmen Electra. I didn't get a cold vibe. I think he sounded business-like, almost parental. Both calls were quick, but hey, the man was one of the biggest stars in the world, not to mention a mogul, managing a stable of musical acts. Finally, at least he said, "I luv u, too." Not everyone always responds that way, especially "international lovers," like Prince.

He DEFINITELY sounded business-like & parental. But not like a man in love. That "I love U,too" was dry and quick. But he was a man with MANY irons in the fire. So I guess he had many more calls to make. wink

But U right he was a mogul and had a lot on his plate.

The more I listen to it, the more I love it.

.

Anna manages to put so much more life into singing it than Carmen, it's pretty incredible to compare the 2!

.

And better even, the instrumental track itself is awesome! IDK what happened when P reworked it in 91, though I suspect Junior Vasquez is responsible for slaughtering it when he "finished" it, but so much has been lost sad This version is full of wonderful little samples and soundz, it's so cooool biggrin

And that video is absolutely lovely. nod

ultimately, what i want most of all -and what she'll probably not share- is the
original Anna Waiting track. that would be great to finally hear.

I don't know if it came from her or if she shared it but this is circulating among some collectors on a tape with other songs from her. I've only heard Anna Waiting through Skype years ago from someone on here and who traded it with 'scary face guy' (I won;t mention his name or he will probably bite my head off again as he does with everyone here it seems rolleyes ) and he said there was more on the tape.

interesting hmmm she says she'll release more songs written by her and prince
so that'll be something to watch out for. perhaps a few more tracks we have
never heard about before.

Anna played us "Anna Waiting" when we visited her at her house late last year, right after we did this interview with her.

It's absolutely amazing. Longer than Vicki, different lyrics, different breakdown. Much more personal. To me, it has more meaning since it's actually about a real relationship and not a fictional one like Vicki.

There's extra Prince harmony vocals on the chorus, too.

Second verse, for example starts with "All is well in Lonely Town..."

That's cool. I have always liked Anna.
