ThatWhiteDude said: Translation:
MAYTE (After the video compilation): I still get emotional about that, because that Song, it's just crazy.
MARKUS: Why?
MAYTE: 'Cause it's still hard to believe that he's gone and it's almost April, it's anniversary of his passing. I think we lived a life of coincidence of fate. And I believe it's fate and it's happening again.
MARKUS: So you believe it's fate that you met him? 'Cause when I read your book, a 16 year old meets that mega star and he invites her to his home, suddenly your at this house, living there. But you discribe him as very respectful, there was nothing sexual going on, this man just loved to spent time with you. How or where did you meet?
MAYTE: I saw his concert in spain on july 25th, I know that because he proposed to me years later on that date, while I was in spain again. That's why I remember this date so correctly. I was 16 but I was protected by my father. As a belly dancer you think about "sexual seduction" but for me, I thought it was a part of myself, I think about a move as a woman, thinking that I can achieve everything when I dance. That was my freedom, that's how I expressed myself. And I think he felt the same with his music, so I think it was that connection between us. There was a connection of our souls. They say there's that "click" when you meet and that's what I felt. Of course I was 16, but he waited, we were friends first I didn't think anything sexual, I didn't think of a relationship, I just thought what a great guy he was.
MARKUS: You're a high profile belly dancer, you won talent shows. The idea was to be part of his world as a dancer. Your mother got this tape to him in Mannheim. What happened next?
MAYTE: She gave that tape to one of his dancers and I met him five minutes later. The security came to my mother and myself and said: "Prince just watched the tape, he'd like to meet you, is that okay?" My mother said "Yes" and he said: "Are you really 16?" I said "Yeah" and my mother said, "go it's okay". It was okay because she knew I'm a professional dancer and that I can handle myself, I just was a trustworthy kid.
MARKUS: And he treated you very decently. You describe this very beautiful in your book how you watched this videos, your dancing tapes again and again and obviously there was this connection between the two of you. What would be interesting is, how was it watching movies with him. Was it like, sitting on the couch at the end of the day, sweatpants and beer, like the rest of us?"
MAYTE: No, no. He had Paisly Park and he had a House. It was recording music and rehearsals and that was pretty much everyday. He loved to watch Basketball, but he never dressed down. He had costume made Pyjamas.
MARKUS: But at the same time you said that you could go shopping in minnesota. It was possible to live a kind of a normal life.
MAYTE: They were used to him there, of course we went shopping at 2 or 5 in the morning, but sometimes fans recoginced us. I had a pink BMW and he had yellow or purple clothes on, so they could see us from the far distance. And he loved it.
MARKUS: You then married and tried to get a baby twice. And there's one scene that's really touching, we're not gonna show it now, but your son was born and died just six days later because of a genetic dissorder and you were at the Oprah Winfrey show and at one point it was like, he was acting like nothing happened, he even showed a children's room even though he knows his son is dead. Why?"
MAYTE: It was our way of uhm. The only way I could get out of bed was him saying "We'll try again". We thought that we can bring this soul back. And I think, instead of hiding it, he wanted people to see what he wanted to be, wich was a father. He made an entire room, a playground at Paisly Park for our child. It made him proud. It was painful, but it was also, I mean we had faith and hope, that's a big word for me, hope.
MARKUS: And then you got pregnant again and had miscarriage, how did it affect the relationship and him as an artist?
MAYTE: Well uhm, after the loss of our first child he wrote this acoustic album and there's this one song called "come back". It was interesting because I remember I woke up one morning and said to him "I can smell him, I can smell the baby." And there's this line in the song: "I knew this sweet wind was you", so I knew he used this for the song. Recently, no actually a year ago I watched this movie "colleteral beauty" with Will Smith where he lost a child. And he's talking to a woman and this woman said: "You are part of the 79% that break up after the loss of a child." 79% of the couples break up after losing a child. When it happens, there's now guide book on how to react or handle it. I can only speak for myself, and it's a pain I don't wish on anyone, not even my biggest enemy. But how he felt? I can't tell. But I know it affected him, I truly believe it changed his music.
MARKUS: So he never talked about it, he used his music to cope with it?
MAYTE: Yes. He's that type of guy who's not looking back. Being with him for ten years I know that's how he dealt with it. He's not looking back.
MARKUS: You broke up, he married again, and became a Jehovas Witness because he tried to deal with it in a spiritual way too. You adopted a child if I remember correctly, living in Las Vegas. Did you have contact with your ex husband? Did you see each other in the last few years? Did you know about his abuse of prescription pills?
MAYTE: I heard some things over the years, but it was never something that I was concerned of. When he got into the relgion, I didn't want to get involved. The third eye situation. You can't be a Jehova Witness and believe in the third eye. I went to a concert a year before he passed and he was there. I could feel it when he walked into the room, they didn't have to tell me, I felt it. And then he left and I felt, "okay, something's going on here". When the plain went down (On April 15, not a year before, they translated it wrong) and they took him off, I though "I have to see him". Back in January I heard that he's not doing well, I didn't know what it was, but I called. And I said "I'm coming", but then they back peddled, so that I can't say "He said this or she said that".
MARKUS: My last question would be, what are you doing today?
MAYTE: My daughter is the angel of my life, she's my everything. I try to live in every moment, 'cause it can be over so fast. And also, you know, honoring Prince for the rest of my life. He's part of my family for the rest of my life.
This is my first translation ever so please don't be too hard on me guys, I tried my best [Edited 3/22/18 12:10pm] [Edited 3/22/18 12:57pm] [Edited 3/22/18 15:45pm] [Edited 3/22/18 15:49pm] Thank you, WD. Much appreciated.

I still am not completely clear about what this means: “Back in January I heard that he's not doing well, I didn't know what it was, but I called. And I said "I'm coming", but then they back peddled, so that I can't say "He said this or she said that.” Who wouldnt say “this or that”? If she was going, wouldn’t she have seen him? It is still a mystery to me as to why P wouksnt ket anyibe close. If he just wanted to deal with it himself thinking get he could, or if it was embarrassment/fakes shame, or if he was just very, very “private” fir some reason and I wonder if so, what caused him to be that way. Or, if he just didn’t want to worry anyone. I guess for those of us who didn’t know him, all we can do us guess.

yes me either, can we politely pic it apart now??? who back peddled?? he did, his camp?
and the bolded what does that mean? [Edited 3/22/18 17:29pm]

and did she say "i am coming" to someone or is she saying that she said that in her head?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I took this as meaning... She called and told them "Im coming" (" because I heard he was not well")..she may have said that or implied it to whoever took her call.. and whoever took her call "Backpeddled" meaning they put her off She cant say "they said this or they said that" because a)she doesnt want to break any confidentiality and/or b) whoever it was made her believe that there wasnt a problem.. by playing dumb
I felt She was deliberately being vague

Thanks <3 Yes it did, it was complicated because I listened to three people: Markus Lanz, Mayte in the background and the translator

Who cares how good her German is?!
Leider ist mein Deutsch sehr schlecht. Ich habe in der schule Deutsch vor vielen Jahre gelernt.
Oh no! That's very probably completely wrong....so drag me out the back and shoot me. I went back to spend almost a month travelling around la belle france a decade later, and, though it was a lot more of a struggle, was pleasantly surprised I managed to get by. Many years later, I can't even watch a French movie without reading the subtitles. I can barely understand a word (albeit admittedly my memory is pretty pathetic...my wife blames my sugar addiction).
I'm not a big fan of Mayte by any stretch of the imagination (never read her book or watched her TV show), but she seems harmless enough to me. I met her once very briefly many years ago, and she was perfectly polite, patient and pleasant.
She seems to me to get more than her fair share of flak on the boards sometimes. Some of the negativity the associates receive gets a bit grating on the nerves. The way I see it, some folks are thinking the very worst, others are thinking the best, and the truth invariably lies somewhere in between.
You missed my point by a country mile. A reading comprehension is a good skill to have. Also,erübrigt sich jede weitere Diskussion.

She did say in several other interviews that she told some people that she's coming to Paisly Park. As to the he/she said this or that thing: I was thinking about that too while translating, and I think (not saying this is a fact), she wanted to implie that people of his camp said what was going on with him, or dropping hints and then when she said: "I'm coming" they back peddled.

That could very well be. She said, “I called, and I said, ‘I’m going.’” Whoever she spoke to must not have been at PP if she said “going” instead of “coming”. Then I think what’s soon as she said, “I’m going” firmly, whoever had told her “this and that” backpeddled (to make it not sound serious or take back what they said) so she wouldn’t go, and also so she couldn’t say she had been told whatever she had been told, by whomever. I wonder if Kirk or Meron or someone had reached out to her back then (this would’ve been January, when she says she “had heard that he wasn’t doing well”), or if it was third-party information. Same thing you said, WD. [Edited 3/22/18 18:25pm]

Something else I realized while watching this: Mayte really does have her own style, and everyone grieves differently. So while some may be quiet about Prince, Mayte is who she is. She is beautiful inside and out.

I started German in 10th grade, have never lived in Germany but been there more times that I can count and now that I'm in the States it's an effort to keep that hell of a German grammar and the more advanced vocabulary in my head but as soon as I land in Germany it does come back. The grammar of my mother tongue is more complicated than that of German and one of the most difficult ones to ever learn so I'm used to dealing with shitty grammar lessons. I've studied several languages, not all by choice and speak a few so you kind of "learn how to learn" them. As far as dialects, gosh I can barely understand anything when I'm in München. I've never gotten around to watch Lanz while in Germany. The way you described his show, I'm obviously not missing anything. Yup, it was obvious that she knew everything that was going to be talked about, there were no surprise questions. I haven't read her book so wasn't exactly sure whether they were all straight from the book. Many talk shows, especially the "lighter" ones prep their quests beforehand so no shade towards Mayte there. Mayte advertised her dance class in Berlin to be taught in German alluding that she was teaching it in German. I guess there wouldn't have been much talking during that class... Once again, no shade towards Mayte per se but c'mon. Nobody is going to judge her if she doesn't speak German or did speak it a bit as a kid but no longer does but don't say you speak it when you clearly don't. It seems you are not allowed to say anything that is even slightly critical and warranted about her lest people on this board will jump on you. [Edited 3/22/18 18:59pm] [Edited 3/22/18 19:01pm]

They should not have backpeddled. In their attempt to either keep their jobs or protect his privacy, they ultimately let him down. She probably should not have let that stop her but how could she know he would be dead in 3 months or if she was even going to be given entrance into Paisley Park.

München is not a part of germany and we germans don't understand their dialect or what I like to call it: Their attempt to speak our language.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think about that thing very often. And you are right, she couldn't know that he would be dead in 3 months. But I would've been even more concerned if the people backpeddled, if I would've been in her position I would've gone. But yeah, she couldn't know that it was that serious.....she probably feels bad about it.

They're pretty arrogant down there for some reason. I go there when I'm on my way to Oberstdorf or down to Austria. I love Bayern as a state but DESPISE Bayern München and anyone who's a fan of those assholes. They are like the New England Patriots of Bundesliga. Not meaning to derail the topic of the thread. I'm sure she most likely does feel bad about it but it sounds like she tried.I seem to remember in another interview that she said she was thinking of going to see him in January and bringing Gia with her so they could meet.

Glad you got the joke ( or at least I think you did). I hate Bayern München too, man they buy all these great players off of the other clubs and that's pretty much all they can do to win, like: "Oh shit, we gotta buy this guy or else we won't win a match."

Yeah, I got the joke. It hurts my ears to listen to them talk. I can talk German that is without a foreign accent but not an accent of a particular region either so since I'm not a native speaker, I don't want to start to learn to speak like they do down there. My old German teacher would rip me a new one. What you said about BM is what makes them so shitty. They have all the money and they think it's some sort of an honor to play for them. I like Borussia. I don't even know why. Just always have. Well, I used to have some sort of a crush on Christoph Metzelder (lol) so I guess I just continued rooting for them after he left to play for Real Madrid. Anyway, not to derail the thread, good for Mayte that she is able to bring her classes overseas. Not sure how much you can learn during one class but I guess it is fun for some Prince fans who somehow feel connected to Prince through Mayte and if that brings them solace then who am I to say anything. Almost everyone except Bria/Brenda and a couple of others have used Prince in one way or another to sell/promote/look-at-me/Prince-fucked-me-once-I-am-relevant/I-saw-him-atpartyin87/whatever, so what is good for the goose is good for the gander, I guess. None of them are getting any of my coins.
