This memoriam done by Vogue when Denis transitioned summed her historically very well

Prince has certainly amassed a number of muses over his lengthy career—Apollonia, Mayte, Sheila E.—all of whom left a singular impression as style and musical harbingers. But it was Vanity, née Denise Matthews, who passed away yesterday at 57, in whom he reportedly met his match. Big hair, barely there negligees, and saucy over-the-thigh boots: As the frontwoman of Prince’s breakout girl group, Vanity 6, the Canadian stunner always brought a sensational and electrifying spirit to the stage that played off of Prince’s gender-bending flair. Like the famous lyrics of her hit single, “Nasty Girl,” suggest, Matthews fully inhabited her sexually liberated persona. But it was the It girl’s leading-lady good looks and charm that would turn her into a star in her own right. Starring in the ’80s kung fu cult classic The Last Dragon, Matthews quickly became the girl crush to legions of young men by playing the ultimate on-screen pop diva, Laura Charles. While it was a look that certainly defined the times—she had the audacity of a latter-day Rihanna—her sartorial impressions are still felt today. Just look to the runway of Hood By Air’s Fall 2016 collection: Those racy vinyl booties look as if they might have been plucked straight from her wardrobe. Even Rodarte’s Fall 2016 collection appeared slightly touched by Matthews’s influence: heavy on the lacy ruffles and shaggy, OTT furs. It’s a sign that the style of this ’80s pop diva is bound to live on.

I agree. It shows he really did care for her that he took the time to send it to her. He wasn't that known for being nice , not to say he wasn't a kind person but just discriminating about who he gave his affection/attention to. Just my impression of him. [Edited 2/16/18 13:55pm]

When was this written? I cannot help but think about the “Be Cool” lyrics that were found at Paisley after his passing.

I think he missed her too. When he learned of her death he was shattered. . The news of her passing shattered Prince. He lingered in his hotel room, getting to the first show a little later than planned — even operating on Princetime, he was usually a very punctual performer. . “He literally found out a few hours before he was due on stage,” Dainty reveals. “One of the guys around him said, ‘Oh, we’ve got a problem’. It was breaking news in the afternoon, our time. “We were all a little bit concerned — his bodyguard and his assistant. That was a very unfortunate day. You wouldn’t have been surprised if you’d got the call saying he needs to postpone the show for 24 hours, he’s too much in grief. But he went on. He was very emotional on stage.” . Within moments of walking on stage that night, Prince stated: “I just found out someone dear to us has passed away, I’m gonna dedicated this song to her.” He then launched into Little Red Corvette, with a touch of Dirty Mind. He also changed the name “Electra” in The Ladder to “Vanity” and tweaked the lyrics to state: “He had a subject named Vanity, he loved her with a passion uncontested, one day her smile went away.” . After the encore, Prince told the audience: “I am new to this playing alone. I thank you all for being patient. I’m trying to stay focused, it’s a little heavy for me tonight ... she knows about this one.” He then played Purple Rain’s The Beautiful Ones (ending the song whispering “Denise, Denise”), before veering off script. . The article is long.He goes on to tel the story of telling Chick throw her in the pool. So, yes he was affected. This concert was a gift because he stated he loved her with a passion uncontested. He let us know which songs were for her. They had a special bond. That cover from RS realally captures it all. Who knew he would join her just 66 days later. I will veer from the discussion that screams to be discussed. They died close together. Weird but no coincidence.

I agree that it was no coincidence. Whenever I watch Vanity talk she sounds like Prince to me. I think that he mentioned in that same show that she loved him formthe artist that he was and he loved her for the artist she was trying to be. While she maynit have been a prolific aritst like Prince, she shared his spirit and free spirit.

I can only speak for myself- I hadn't followed "Vanity", aka Denise Matthews since the 80's (in the 90s, I stopped following Prince too). Over the years, I remember seeing her on TBN and other Christian programs in late 90's and early 00s, but I never paid full attention. It was the shock of Prince dying within 2 months of her that drew me back. I know sad, but it is what it is. I have learned so much about her in the last 2 years. If I had been a follower of hers all throughout and if she was sick, and broke, I would've tried to contribute. Maybe you knew her personally? If you did, I'm sorry for your loss.

There's no way Prince would've said no to helping her. I don't understand it.

What really bothered me, was there were post on her asking for help for her and NO ONE cared to. But after she passed away it was thread after threads of condolences here. Smh
But thanks for your response. She's in a better place now. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

Those so called rich people didn't really care about her. But one person that did still care was Prince. . Hmmm, I really don't think it's fair to say that no one cared. Perhaps a lot of people didn't even know how sick she was until she passed away? There were many people praying for her and I'm sure they tried to help, financially, but in all honesty, none of us really know how many people tried to help her. I'm sure Prince offered to help with her medical expenses; he would be the first in line to help Denise.

It was a few threads here, about Denise's dire situation and begging for people to buy her book to help her financially. Not to mention Denise herself constantly asking for her fans to buy her relaunched, discounted, autobiography that she was frantically putting together. Before she tragically passed away. That was virtually IGNORED here. I'm sorry I'm not biting my tongue about this. This is true. I would like to know when he sent her this letter because she had many times that she was hospitalized.

Her hospitalizations are amazing, Her body took on alot.It had to be the Holy Spirit perserving through all of that. In her testimonies she admits Jesus sustained her and she was cut into so much. She never had self pity though. She was driven to get the word out for Christ and enjoy her life. I wish her Church Family would sometimes share things about her ministry. Her sermons need to be released. I am hoping her Estate will make that happen.

Hey. You don't know what people did. People have lives as well. and dealing with suffering death sicknesses of their own/families. You don't know peoples financial situations or life situations. And again you don't know what people have done. Do not, I repeat, Do Not, turn this thread into your own personal vindictive attack. You just RE-joined the org (allegedly) this month. Blaming people for Denise Matthews death is pathetic.
