BrownMark's Newest Interview.

Interesting. neutral

Really dude? Who was the Brother and who was the Sister in your relationship? confused Here are some snippets. I can't get the link option to work, so just copy and paste it in your browser.

Me and Prince had a very unique relationship with each other. We fought like brothers and sisters. (Laughs) Literally, I mean, we would get into it like two brothers. You would think we were brothers. When you have that kind of relationship with somebody and then, all of a sudden, they’re gone and you don’t even know why, it hurts. And It hurt bad.

ABC: The last show Prince performed was here in Atlanta. What do you remember most about it?

BrownMark: I don't remember much. I don't know if it’s my age or my brain just being cluttered, but I do not remember much. I loved to come to Atlanta. I loved it when we would come here because I had so many friends over at Spellman. Notice I didn't say Morehouse. (Laughs) I had a lot of friends over at Spellman and would have a blast. I don’t remember too much about the show other than it was funky like all of them. My memory just doesn’t serve me well. (Laughs)

ABC: What do you like to do with your downtime?

BrownMark: I really wish I had downtime. (Laughs) I'm currently working on my own album. I’ll be releasing a BrownMark Nation record. I haven't released one in 5 years maybe. I'm excited about releasing a new record. It’s going to be a funk record — funk, pop, dance, R&B/whatever. It's a type of record that I have not done before so I'm excited to put that out.

I’m painstakingly putting my group, Mazarati, back together. Unfortunately, I can't put the whole group together but I got most of them back so I'm going to join forces with that group and we're going to take it on the road.

When I'm not on the road, I'm in the recording studio. Thats all I do. I have a huge song library that I haven't released yet which it but that's what I do. I just write music. I create new music and sounds and just catalog — put them in a library and save them for when I'm ready to use my past. I don't play sports or anything. I grab my guitar, go in the studio and play.

The thing about brother and sister. That's like when some people say: "Who's the woman and who's the man in the relationship?" When it comes to gay couples. smh. neutral

There is another new interview out there where he says that Prince was who made him who he was and stated that Prince "laughed, smiled, cried, got angry, fussed and fought" like anyone of us. (that part is undeniably true.)

But were they really that close? According to Leeds, many people who were interviewed for the Alex Hahn book were avoided by Prince thereafter. Wasn't Mark in that book?

I really don't know what to think about Mark Brown or many of Prince's associates to be honest (of all eras).... I can't tell if he is sincerely mourning this loss or trying to sound generous about Prince so that he can further his own career path in a way that almost reminds me of Eve Harrington from All about Eve (I wish he would take the Andre Cymone approach to music..a sound that is not particularly similar to Prince's) . Maybe, this is just selfishness on a fan's part but it feels kind of rotten that Mark's rebirth is the result of the P's death.

Plus, how much can he really be a fan/brother/sister/whatever if he can't remember the wonderful and very intimate Piano and Microphone performance? It seems like the only time musicians ( who came up around the same time as Prince or were around 20 years) remember P's music is if they are involved directly in it themselves. (Even Michael Bland was honest enough to admit that years ago on this very site; although I imagine P's death made him listen to a bit ore)

At least Morris Day posts various clips of P on his facebook page that do not include himself in them. And those two did fight like brothers. Also, he stated implicitly on facebook that Prince was underrated even by himself. All these SOB's are opportunists to some extent (hell, Prince was too), but pretending to mourn while quietly celebrating (launching 2 old groups that were dormant [or mostly dormant] when P was alive???--damn, talk about reliving what might have been had P just got out of the way 20 years ago!!!) rubs me the wrong way and at times, I get that vibe with Mark above others. Not entirely sure why though.

In his defense, I don't think he said anything to bad in the interview I read. That quote I provided is pretty accurate about any human being I have ever met.

But he has an inconsistency in his other statements that make him seem disingenuous..".oh he was my mentor and made me who I am but I can't remember his last and most personal concert performance"...dude, was he even there??/)

especially since Prince overdosed that very night and was taken to the hospital. If I am being generous, maybe BRown doesn't remember the performance because he knew that P was sick and was too concerned with that fact. But I don't see any proof of any concern from him..unless he knew P's private email and sent his concerns and we just didn't hear anything about it.

"I wanted community more than anything else. These days if I have Rhonda [S., formerly The Artist’s primary live bassist] play on something, she’ll bring in her Jaco influence, which is something I wouldn’t add if I played it myself. I did listen to Jaco -- I love his Joni Mitchell stuff -- but I never wanted to play like him." The Artist still raves about the original Revolution bassist, Brown Mark (who took over for Andre Simone), calling him the tightest bass player next to Graham himself.

Prince was going to get the Revolution back together for the Roadhouse Garden album, and BrownMark played bass with Prince at Paisley Park during the Celebrations. BrownMark years before Prince died, talked about his relationship with Prince and also said he was jamming with Prince and some other musicians @ Paisley Park with Prince prior to his death.

Plus, how much can he really be a fan/brother/sister/whatever if he can't remember the wonderful and very intimate Piano and Microphone performance? I guess it could be thrown back at you, 'how much can you really be a fan since you were not a fan of Prince until after he died as a result of you getting interested in Prince via a student...

Were you on this very site years ago when Michael Bland ...admitted that?

I thought you weren't even around till 7.17.2016

It is easy. When you are in the moment of something, a time period can go in a flash for various reasons.
.
Even a lot of things we experience, not until we think about it, do we remember until after the fact of thinking about it.

.
Thank God for the ability to type/write for the human race.

I've been to concerts, I've seen Prince(& the Revolution) live and just remember sensations and feelings. BrownMark isn't a 'fan' like us. It can be easy to do the Purple Rain tour and not remember a lot of it.

Is he saying some smart ASS comments or is that you 'feeling some kind of way' as you read it.
Isn't that human nature to interpret things according to how we feel in the moment? Not to mention, not being in the same space with him and using those basic 5 senses in the act of communicating.
.
Isn't that the big problem with this generation in trying to be human in communication via emal/IM/text? A big part of the process is missed. I can call my brother an Asshole to his face and he will crack up laughing, but do via text and he might get angry/confused/unsure etc

I see we are going to get into a wordy tussle tonight...

Geez, your proof is of Prince playing off and on with Mark Brown prior to the Hahn book and some statements that they played together later... BIG whoop. I said "I don't know what I feel about Brown" because I admit that I do not know him personally but the inconsistency of his interviews and his exploiting their past to relive past glories --well, I don't respect it. These folks need to forge their own paths and honor Prince in an honest way that doesn't just mean self-aggrandizing their role in his past. And NPG with their kirk johnson involvement are starting to irk me as well. But at least, mOrris Hayes can mention more than 80s songs when discussing P's work however.

Strawman argument again...huh?? How do i know that Bland said that? I READ IT BY LOOKING THROUGH THE ARCHIVES OF HIS SITE... THE SEARCH ENGINE BOX. Somebody at some point in the last two years mentioned that Bland had been interviewed on here so I looked it up and read that massively long question and answer session. I like Bland however because he seems honest, no nonsense and respectful.

My earlier ignorance of Prince's vast catalogue does not mean his own co-workers and supposed friends should sell him short in an attempt to remind people of their own greatness. "he was great but he needed his human computer to sour" argument... Just because he doesn't remember specifics about the P and M tour, he could at least indicate how emotional the performance was and say he played well or something...Its like he didn't want to admit that P could carry a performance without him and the rest of the crew...It was funky like usual is all he could come up with...Give me a break. There were casual fans who had more to say about that performance... The Revolution sure remembers when P complimented Lisa's playing in one of those shows however.... but Mark can't remember the last time he saw Prince alive doing a ground-breaking performance in P's history on the same night P almost died. If MB said that because he was too pre-occupied with Prince's health at the time, Then I honestly apologize but nothing short of that is kind of shitty on his part.

It seems like the only time musicians ( who came up around the same time as Prince or were around 20 years) remember P's music is if they are involved directly in it themselves. (Even Michael Bland was honest enough to admit that years ago on this very site; although I imagine P's death made him listen to a bit ore)

I guess it could be thrown back at you, 'how much can you really be a fan since you were not a fan of Prince until after he died as a result of you getting interested in Prince via a student...

Were you on this very site years ago when Michael Bland ...admitted that?

I thought you weren't even around till 7.17.2016

He knew him, you didn't. I mean I don't understand your intensity of having issues with Mark or other associates.

This was a smart ass comment.

Me and Prince had a very unique relationship with each other. We fought like brothers and sisters.

No I don't see it as smart ass. All it is saying is fought like siblings. Unless you think of the feminine as degraded to a man. If he said 'we fought like sisters' that would be one thing.

.

PennyPurple, I really don't see that as a bad comment.

Even a lot of things we experience, not until we think about it, do we remember until after the fact of thinking about it.

Thank God for the ability to type/write for the human race.

I've been to concerts, I've seen Prince(& the Revolution) live and just remember sensations and feelings. BrownMark isn't a 'fan' like us. It can be easy to do the Purple Rain tour and not remember a lot of it.

Seriously? How can he not remember the Atlanta Concert? The last time he seen his friend alive...The night he almost died on the plane?

C'mon you are always holding up for BM.

He could remember a whole lot of things about it, different from what you might remember.

No, I'm not holding up, I'm just not looking to find fault in such human situations.

Again, what you did there was change his words. You said he did not remember the Atlanta concert.

But what he said (in the piece you posted was) don't remember much. I don't know if it’s my age or my brain just being cluttered, but I do not remember much. I don’t remember too much about the show other than it was funky like all of them. My memory just doesn’t serve me well.

I remember I read somewhere that Chick said he saw Prince fighting guys two times bigger than him, so I guess Mark wouldn't be a match tho. lol lol

Well, its going to be hard to remember Mazarati and old Prince and the Revolution songs or to recount how they met and his own brilliant contributions and how his basslines were removed or whatever else he wants to say about P's glory days with himself and the rest of the crew --if he can't remember shit.

rolleyes lol yall need to get off it. In the long run of Purple History Mark was there and a part of it. He was friends with Prince till the end

.

Being irked about this stuff is meaningless. It's one thing if they were cussing each other out.

.

Why does he have to say how emotional it was? To invoke a feeling for you/us? Then people would question that. He said he does remember the show was funky. I have the Atlanta show, Prince funked it up. Maybe he is expressing things as best as he can.

.

There are a lot of fans who don't know much about the music or the show other than 'he looked so beautiful' and all that doey eyed 'he's so beautiful, he's so sexy' crap... But I guess that is their right to fantasize about him for what they paid to right?

My earlier ignorance of Prince's vast catalogue does not mean his own co-workers and supposed friends should sell him short in an attempt to remind people of their own greatness. The Revolution sure remembers when P complimented Lisa's playing in one of those shows.

There is a difference between a show and an experience.

A lot of people don't remember a lot about an experience they've lived until much later AFTER.

Even Prince recorded everything so he could remember. It would be hard to, even being in a concert.
I went to the Fresh Fest II concert in the 80s Run-DMC Fat Boys LL Cool J etc and I only remember some girl giving a guy head in the same row as us, LL Cool J bringing out his couch and one of the guys from the group after the show at the hotel throwing his towel at the audience and a dude pulling out a gun because he was angry the show wasn't what he expected. I loved those groups, and 20+ years later don't remember it, But it was one hell of a show.

Oh course they are only going to post the reviews that go beyond the doey eyed

.

Sheila E, in her interviews doesnt' seem to remember much about the recordings either, that doesn't mean she is taking advantage. She was always like that. We never got much detail about anything. But she remembers the excitement of the times. She's said those times feel like it wasn't long ago. And hell yes a whole lot of female fans don't know much about his music and cannot seem to talk much about it it other than doey eyed compliments.

.

Oh oh cool you remember the size 12 shoes under the bed. Ok. Do you think everyone remembers that? Hell I have the show and I don't remember that part.

I guess the size 12 shoes was crucial to you. But can you say you would have remembered it if you were there?

Why do they always remembers specifics when they pertain to themselves. LIke I said, Prince talking about Lisa's playing sure was remembered by Wendy and co with specific detail? Okay, he could have said I remember he played piano, kept it funky and discussed his father and told stories. That would be easy to remember, don't you think. Just calling it funky....of course, its funky, its Prince. Generic answer like calling a Beyonce concert sexy... hey, the details you gave about a 20 year concert thrown together by folks you don't know personally is not the same thing as the last concert (and an unusual one at that) of a recently deceased friend. False equivalency in my opinion.

Casual fans and a mentoree/supposed friend of 30 years do not equate.

Sheila remembers what serves her as well... but we are also talking about recording music several years ago. Not the last concert of a friend who died two years ago. Describing the experience with such a generic word is not cool especially since he can remember much more specific details from experiences from 30 years ago.

Fault finding, you're just looking to pick something a part to be mad at someone because you were not a fan to actually experience Prince when he was alive. there is no other reason for you to be so intently pissed with these people who worked for Prince played with Prince and was friends with Prince, because they are not doing things the way you think is proper.

Bobby Z (who knows the limits of his own ability) has never said shit about P's talent that wasn't mostly complementary..we aren't talking about him or even Dr. Fink (his pre-Prince-death interviews on youtube are complimentary). Eric Leeds stated that P was a great musician but basically dismissed his music. Wendy and Lisa and eric like to remind folks about their superior knowledge of musical culture (or something to that effect.) If I recall, Wendy did compliment him for his guitar playing (especially rhythym guitar playing)...Brown has said more than a few times that he was bored when P did his romance songs and now he cant remember anything from his intimate p and m tour but he did say P once picked up a bass and shocked him with his ability. Some Rev members are more complimentary than others but they all admit he had technical talent---sometimes I wonder if they respect his artistry as much.

Are you seriously saying that I am "mad" at MB because i didn't get to see Prince live with him??? That was pulled out of nowhere and has absolutely no truth to it.

the truth is that I am frigging tired of Purple Rain even though I love the album. I am tired of people acting like the man was a complete has-been before he was forty. maybe commerically Prince was, but the lovers of his talent and art should be mining the vastness of his work for the gems even in albums that are mostly muck (like people on this site often do) , not over-saturating the market with the same songs over and over again. I am not diminishing the importance of those songs to people who lived through them, i get it. But there is too much exploitation of the nostalgia for my taste and I feel oddly sorry for Prince that he has become almost a caricature, a caricature who brings people fond memories of their childhoods and experiences when his music was new. Ageism pisses me off. Even older folks are guilty of it. My parents even do it to the musicians they grew up with...they only like them when they are young. And then the musician dies and people throw out the last 30 years of their lives as if they don't count to recapture the musician's youth and perhaps their own.

Morris doesn't need to say much when he posts clips of a 2011 concert with Prince singing songs without him on his facebook--songs like "If I was your girlfriend?" . That says it all. when have any revolution member or Sheila done that?? I am not exempting Sheila for being so self-involved in her tributes. But she, at least, works with NPG members in tributes to P...they don't. they only do music they can claim involvement in and avoid all other connections at least in terms of performance..yes, I know they hang out with NPG folks and get along with almost everyone (Jill aside) but I am talking about performance.
