I’ve said this before:Brenda is the real star of the A6 album. She sings lead on the best tracks and she absolutely shines.

Brenda's voice is probably one of the most unique of all of Prince's associates. It's that wonderful raspy, deep, kinda dirty girl feel when she sings. And on a mid-tempo blues heavy track like "Some Kind of Lover", it's a gem. There's a masculine quality to her voice that tells you she's in charge, and it is juxtaposed by her feminine sultry "oohs", "aahhs" and moaning that remind you not only is she in charge, but she's leading the games with her very real and very present vagina; meaning her womanhood is as important of a role in her liaisons with someone as her take charge demeanor is in them. Even Vanity couldn't pull that off.

I'd love to hear her fully sing "17 Days" from back in the day. I would suspect it would have been a Brenda song had it stayed on the A6 album. She's the only one who could sing about smoking cigarettes and it be believable.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Personally I prefer Apollonia's voice. It's prettier & Brenda's voice is too deep 4 my taste. She sounds like a guy!

Yes, I totally agree.

I wish Prince would have focused on the tracks she lead and pushed videos/singles for.

What you were hearing with Apollonia's voice was Lisa Coleman & Jill Jones underneath making it prettier.

I must admit I loved Susan Moonsie's voice as well like on Drive Me Wild & Make Up.

the Apollonia 6 album should have been title Pandora 6(that was Prince's next move in doing a girl group, that way whatever lead left the name didn't have to change)

But a Pandora 6 album could have included Jill Jones tracks Wednesday G-Spot etc

Prince's mistake was naming the group after the lead singer. It was odd when Vanity abrupty left and he had to come up with a new name (Apollonia 6).That problem could have been prevented if he had named them something like, say,The Pussycats lol

For whatever reason the response from the public no matter what name justwas not there. I think it was timing.

It was a contractual obligation it was not going to sell as no effort was put into marketing the record.

LOL Yep, especially since he knew Apollonia wasn't going to do the full job.

I know Apollonia get's a lot of stick on the org from u guys, saying that she can't sing. Vocal technique is not everything, it's also about having a spark and expression of personality. Her singing on her solo album was stronger than her vocals with A6. wink

I speak for myself. I loved Apollonia for her place in purple history. So no she doesn't get a lot of stick from me. But she couldn't sing. That is on record, when Prince asked her.

.

I like her voice, but she could not handle that frontmen position. Vanity also wasn't a SANGER, but she could vocal hold her own and work wonders with the music. Plus her charisma solidified her in that spot.

And can we PLEASE make sure we give Jill Jones credit for singing on this just to prevent another cyber meltdown! Thank you. lol

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

If it was Vanity 6 it would have been on another level.
.
If the person who filled that lead role was serious about being in that spot, the public response would have been bigger. The Purple Rain movie platform was the perfect jumping off point. Blue Limousine for example if it was in the movie would have been a hit. It is a stronger song than Sex Shooter. There is some good music on that album. But like the Time's Ice Cream Castles, the desire to live it out by the frontmen was not there.
.
Similarly if The Time was the O7, Morris would not have left (nor would anyone else) and the PR era would have been on a whole different level.

You bring up a good point. It's interesting that, right before filming for Purple Rain began,it seemed as if Prince was having problems keeping the empire together.Vanity abruptly left the movie and the group....Jimmy and Terry were fired from The Time (which angered Morris).Even though it all worked out and replacements were found,I always wonder how things would have been if all the original people stayed put and completed the project.Without question,a second Vanity 6 album would have been HUGE...would have taken them to another level.

I and another 'purple' buddy of mine where talking about what it must have been like leading up to the Purple Rain 'era' fame

.

A lot of times people, even the most confident, might have a little doubt(which is natural) but might drag their feet, or do things that might seem like they don't want success.
I think him not negotiating the Vanity and firing Jimmy & Terry was an unconscious move of sabatoge.

.
I mean those two things those 2 moves made absolutely no sense.

Still tingling from the success of the 1999 era Triple Threat tour Prince & the noitloveR/1999 the Time What Time Is It? and Vanity 6/Vanity 6... to think changing the guard at this crucial moment was an ok move.

.

I mean yeah he found 'replacement's' or should I say 'stand ins' but he never replaced Vanity Jimmy Terry or Monte. You just cannot 'replace' synergy and bonds. Morris Day was done after Prince fired Jimmy & Terry. I'm the O7 was unit. And you saw that same bond with Vanity Susan & Brenda. Apollonia could never duplicate that.

.

The Purple Rain era 1984-1985 with Prince & the Revolution The Time Vanity 6 & Sheila E???? WHAT!!! The music release success would have been bigger. The Time album Ice Cream Castles in my opinion probably would have been different and of course the promotion for it would have been lived out-Which we did not get 1984-1985. The Vanity 6 album as you and I have talked about would have been even better. The strong songs would have been on there and I think if Manic Monday was a Vanity 6 song it would have been a huge hit for them. the Purple Rain era would have rivaled ... oops cannot talk about that other guys period.

Earlier in 1984,there was speculation that The Time would headline their own tour, with Apollonia 6 as their opening act.Of course, these plans never materialized but it would been really cool.I hate that The Time fell apart at the exact moment when they were getting heavy exposure and a massive audience.

Probably the Time would be their backing band like with Vanity 6

She could play guitar too, that would have been a nice dynamic to add to the group

Like I always wondered why Prince didn't utalize at time the Twinz playing guitar (actually I think only 1 plays guitar, even though the unreleased video from 2011/2012 had them both playing guitar)
