Of course I am in a minority amongst those who want to see the REvolution. I reckon that most of the people hankering to see the Revolution only want his 80's work anyway. That don't make it right though that they can't throw P's later work a bone here and there. 3 to 6 minutes of out their set to remind folks that it ain't all about the Revolution's era wouldn' kill them.

They are claiming a degree of ownership over his 80's material right now anyway. Unless they just blantantly lie, it would be impossible for them to claim ownership of any kind over the rest of his material. And that is partly why I think they won't touch the rest of his material. The NPG is playing the entirety of his music, no one is making the claim that they are taking credit for his 80's work.

I'd wager that you're in a very small minority who would have any interest in the Revolution playing 90's or 2000's Prince songs. I can see the "Who do the Revolution think they are? Trying to claim ownership over Prince's entire career" threads already. I'm going to trust them to know what they should and should not play.

Wouldn't have much interest myself and I'd see it as more wrong than right if they did shrug

I'd say they're entitled to a degree of ownership to the material they played with him live back in the day tbh. Same as how 3rd Eye Girl have a degree of ownership over their stuff, The Time have a degree of ownership over their albums, The NPG etc. etc.

As for the NPG, they always played pre NPG stuff with Prince so it makes more sense that they would still play it now. I haven't followed the tours too closely but their website has people from 1990 all the way up to NPG 2016 so they have the entire length and breadth of his career to choose from when picking the setlists. Besides I never said anyone was saying the NPG were taking credit for the 80's work so I'm not sure where that is coming from confuse

I am done. Let them tour as a band minus its leader ( the band’s lead singer, lead guitarist, lyricist and primary songwriter). Their tour would not bother me if once, just once, they appeared on a tribute that was an actual tribute to prince. Its a tragedy that Sheila's tribute at BET awards didn't include them and it would have probably had included them if it hadn't become a pissing contest.. Them sending a representative to his memorial tribute but deciding to tour without him within 4 days Of his death —well, disappointing (even if they had work obligations, they could have recorded a video or something to send to that memorial despite what they think about how it was run..that memorial was for the fans of Prince in all his incantations and eras. .) . How long did the Wailers wait to tour after Bob Marley died? Have the heartbreakers already announced their touring dates since Tom Petty died? It seems like the Revolution think they above the fray but they are no better than the rest of them. I agree with Jill about that one. The Revolution were throwing shade at Sheila for performing so soon after Prince died. But they were obviously already working towards touring right away themselves. They had to rehearse first... Now Wendy’s guitar god status can be affirmed nightly in small venues and Mark's bass playing can get more focus. All is right with the world.

Somebody on here stated the revolution playing the post-80’ work would be like they were claiming credit for it. I am saying no one would think that just like no one assumes the opposite (that the NPG is claiming pre-90’s prince music.

She is a good guitar player. I don't dismiss the Revolution's talent to make my point. And I acknowledge that he could be iffy on credits as they have been reminding people for 30 years in books and interviews. That is beside the point. Why can't they tout their importance in their tour but still throw the rest of his career a bone by appearing in overall tributes to the man entire career?? They could do both. The fact they don't feels like an insult to him and his other bands.

If you want I can start a thread that states implicitly..."I wasn't an obsessive fan before his death but could you still respect my feelings???. " I am emotionally involved more than you realize. I am not stating these things to upset long-term fans. But Prince busted his ass his whole life and essentially worked himself to death and it feels like the Revolution wants to relegate him to their talented lead singer. Its feels that way. I can't help the way their lack of involvement in other tributes makes me feel. You can see it the way you want. Having a preference for his 80's work doesn't mean we have to act like he did nothing of quality after W and L's influence wasn't around. Just as unfair as saying that W and L didn't do film and tv scores and just sat around waiting for Prince to reunite the Revolution. My involvement has been intense for a year and a half. It hasn't been for 30 years, but I can't help how I feel.

I thought I was done. I guess not. To be honest, I realizze I am being a Don Quixote fighting windmills but believing they are giants. Their tour and lack of involvement elsewhere probably won't matter in the long run. Prince is still famous and he will probably still be considered an 80's icon no matter what. But to be honest, if the NPG are self-serving I don't give a shit. They are not as acclaimed and I dont have the same degree of respect for them. But the Rev's non-involvement in other tirbutes feels like Paul McCartney refusing to do JOhn Lennon Tributes unless only Beatles songs are allowed.. It kind of hurts in a weird way. I don't know entirely why it upsets me so. It might suprise you to know that I have fond memories of Lisa singing on 1999 when I was a kid and Shelia's one-legged pants and Wendy's spot in Kiss. An idea tribute would have everyone there together embracing the entirety of his career together. After all, his career feels like the only thing he had.

You keep saying that if I had gone to the Revolution concert I would feel better, but that's like telling an atheist that if they read the Bible they might believe in God. The fundamental belief in something has to come first.

Guitar god? No, but she has been a working guitarist since she was 19. That puts her in a minority of a minority -- a professional musician who has been able to make a living off playing music for decades.

That's rare, period. Especially rare for women musicians.

Not really, The Revolution had reformed on more than one occasion before he died, there was plenty of precedent. Not to mention that it's not exactly the big money spinner people who hate them like to pretend it is. You could maybe throw that accusation at the NPG if you wanted to since they had never formally played without him before, although I'd personally say their intentions are honourable. Every one of these people (Rev and NPG alike) have nothing but good things to say about Prince and clearly want to honour their time with him in a way he'd approve, i.e. through the playing of music.

NOthing but nice things to say about Prince? NOt quite. Mostly kind but they throw a few digs in every once in a while. The NPG interview after Prince's death had a few negative comments and LIsa stated that Prince could be a "dick" sometimes. Wendy appeared on a show complaining the prince never thanked her for her contributions (nevermind, the Rolling Stone cover.) MOrris day stated that he loved him but you didn't know sometimes if you would get the funny guy or the "ayatollah Khamenei" (pretty hyperbolic, Morris) NOt that they can never say anything negative, but let's not sugar coat it.

Think about the comments from Lisa and Wendy. They really still feel he should have been kissing their asses despite the fact that they worked for him. If someone were really a dick to me I would move on with my life instead of referencing that person continually and making money off of his work.

Because he sure contributed a hell of a lot more then they did to that music. Some people have nerve and that is all they have. These chicks may have another decade or so to ride the PR gravy train. I hope they enjoy themselves.

Whenever Gravy Train is mentioned I always recall those old
Dog food commercials. The dogs come running from around the corner.

I've been to a couple of their shows. I will tell you one thing: they are giving the people (fans) what they wsnt. Their shows are well received so i'm pretty sure they don't give a darn what anyone here thinks or says about it. Or anyone else. As it should be. I don't care to hear about all this behind the scenes back-biting between his past associates. It's irrelevant and tbh just plain petty. Enjoy the music. Or don't. Its as simple as that.
On a side note my son and his friends attended a show this summer in Mpls to see Bon Iver and the Revolution played a set prior. When we met up after the show those kids were unexpectedly blown away by the Revolution. I feel its a blessing they are out there turning naive music fans on to Prince's work ❤
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

Some of the associates remind me of those dogs.

Well he is dead and a person with home training might have let the back-biting comments go.

As far as Bon Iver I hope P comes back as a ghost and haunts whatever fool let that boring snoozer sing P's songs.

Yes I saw that when I attended as well, That they were filling a need to hear
The music. I can’t say that I didnt notice the joy. I hope that anyone who is new to the music will ignore my interest in how I ramble on about how I think these various associates can attend to his legacy and/or pay tribute. Glad your sons friends enjoyed the music!!

It is the truth. There comments were tacky but there they are singing his songs.

His cousin Charles pointed the same thing out about Andre.

Please tell me you had taken your sons to an actual Prince concert or at least sent them to concerts online. I personally would rather watch the MOntreux 2009 bootlegs over and over (and have) than a Revolution concert. The best way to honor Prince is to direct people to PRince.. (and not just Prince and the Revoluiton concerts in grainy quality from 1983...although I could watch some of those clips over and over--Computer Blue from 1st avenue--holy shit...)

The Revolution and the NPG are making money doing music they love but let's not pretend its all for Prince. Its as much for themselves if not more. I don't know--maybe they figure the estate has fallen short on honoring his live work so they want to give folks an idea of what they were taught or were able to bring to the entirety of the sound. I am all for his musicians getting their due. I watched a podcast recently with Greg Breyer (I think that is his name) and hearing him love on the ability and talent of all the musicians he saw work with Prince and for him to love on Prince as well...that was great. I want all these musicians who do real music to get love but Prince was singular and irreplaceable and I would rather these folks do one big show together (like a 2 day free festival) and then be inspired to keep moving forward than play his most obvious hits for months on end and spend most of the time making new or casual fans think that Prince was nothing without the Revolution.
