This is OLD but in Her Own Words- Denise "Vanity" on Meeting Prince

I like how she calls her meeting a Cinderella story; that seems to be a theme used by many protoges of Prince.

.

She also mentions the real Prince. I get the feeling many never had the opportunity to see the real Prince . He seems to have been a true chameleon.

Thanks, Vashtix, I heard this one a while back. I love how she admitted that she was done after hearing him play the piano. One thing I loved about Denise was that she had no pretense where Prince was concerned. Did she say she wasn't interested at first when she first met him? I thought I heard her say that but it wasn't very clear.

No , they dated , per info from TOB he went after her and did not let on he had girlfriends in Minneapoplis. He gave good info in this thread http://prince.org/msg/5/4...&pg=3.

He gives even more insight; he shared Prince studied her due her having an extensive resume and of course looks. He knew what he was doing when he met her.

He had to persuade her jump in and somehow she fell for him, she fell in love.

Yes, that was an interesting perspective from TOB point of view. He thought that it was likely that Prince knew of her beforehand. I'm not confused as to if they dated in the beginning before she moved to Minneapolis. I know that they did date. She's written about it as well as said that they did in many different interviews. I meant when Prince was pursuing her in the first few days or so. She said he kept calling and pursued her until she dated him and I also thought I heard her say that she wasn't interested in him at first in those first few days but I'm not sure. EDIT TO ADD: It was at the 1:17 mark. Can you make out what she said?

Sounds to me like she says I really wasn't all that interested in him when I first met him.

He did not let her see the "real" Prince who was more than a rock star-

.

She did not want to divulge anything else either-so secretive, and private.

She said she suggested he do an album of just piano because it was outside of the realm of what he normally did and was that good. I may have said this before (in another thread), but perhaps Piano and Microphone Tour may have been him going on that idea.

She was so open and honest about him. I loved that about Denise, and I think Prince loved her for her vulnerability and openness too.
He said around 2014, "No one could talk like her." ! smile He was still thinkibg and talking about her, all those years later.
Wow.
He was such a special man with such a huge life, and all these girls who came into his life mattered so much to him.

Denise/Vanity was refreshing because she was not playing coy at all- she was honest and real about him. There is another interview floating around when she admitted he wanted her to write more about him in her book but she did not do it. Their friendship lasted for decades and I think she was his equal and person who lived life similar to him in sensibilities of the heart, soul and mind.

*

I will always believe her death rocked him because she was one of the few real people in his life and seeing a friend and contemporary die has to make you look at your own mortality different

His tribute to her when she died and afterward said all I needed to know of how special and dear their friendship was to him. It outlasted bands, girlfriends, flings and wives.

I do agree with you, I feel she said no to him more than anyone and that is why
Their friendship lasted she wasn't afraid to say no. And I think when she dropped
All things Vanity that was the moment he envied her the most, possibly. Because she freely said no more, and I think he highly admired that, and wanted that liberation to a degree. My feeling.

She said no to him and still loved him. When she died she said he was the only man she had ever loved. Per information from Toban we have learned that Prince and Denise maintained contact and friendship over the years carving out time of their busy scheldules to share companionship.

SO yes , Prince was not a person who could not do long term friendships. He and Denise were people whose lives paralleled and clearly had an understanding. She speaks of him in this vid freely and not cryptic or playing did they or didn't they-she is confident speaking of her friend and no fear with her talking of him. I love that about Denise.

Really? The bolded is absolutely ludicrous. Prince actually requested that Denise write more about him in her book?! Guess he proofread "Blame it on Vanity" before it went to press? I just can't with this.....😂

She wasn't using him in any way.

I am growing very weary of associates who play coy.
Coyness is SO dishonest.
Prince loved MANY women and that should be either kept TRULY quiet, or expressed authentically like Denise did.

We even know now that Denise demanded more money for PR than she knew she could get, as an excuse to leave Prince because she felt that's what God wanted. I wonder what that was about. Did she leave for her own good, or his, or both?

She said in the 80s that her and Prince had a great connection but didn't bring out the best of each other. She wondered in her writing if they were brought together by angels or demons.

Ok...so where is the letter from Prince to Denise in which he requests "she include more about him in her book"? That is the claim you made and that is a pretty "big deal" to me.

Yes!!! I love that part in the interview on the other thread.
Where she knew that their power was equal, she felt equal. She seems like she would be the kind of child who could play endlessly by themselves and chat to themselves and her imaginary friends, children who are like that are

Their lives paralled; I believe they knew they were true mirrors; As Toban shared no matter the wives, the girlfriends etc. and her preaching duties they maintained companionship. I believe they swere ying/yang and on a spiritual level-imagine going through life and getting to middle age and the discussion is about meds/ medical procedures ,changes due to aging and laughing at all the stuff they did in their 20s?

Toban said Denise was an event and always had something new and fresh to share and I would think that is why Prince enjoyed her company - she was creative always finding something new and original to share with him -she kept his attention and was his age - he did not have explain things and she was there when he became the icon so she knew things others would not. I would think he did not have to be Prince rockstar/icon around her; she knew him before, during, and after he became the icon. I see them studying the Bible and praying together to since their faith was important. I am not romanticizing just saying I understand the friendship They accepted one another as they were. We would all be lucky to have the friendship they seemed to have over the years.

.

Realizing they had that type of friendship explains his reaction when she transitioned. PLEASE NOTE I am not talking a love affair I distinctly said F-R-I-E-N-D-S-H-I-P . . . friendship.

Yup. I get that. Been there.
Sometimes God allows something so both people can learn something.
I think their relationship was great but also showed each of them where they needed more work on themselves.

I feel she left so they could both grow.
Maybe he knew that and that's why he respected her so much.
It's not easy to do what she did: leave Prince.

They often become remarkably adults In touch with Many worlds. I see why he liked her, the ability she had to go to imagination Is quite apparent.

PLEASE NOTE I am not talking a love affair I distinctly said F-R-I-E-N-D-S-H-I-P . . . friendship.

I don't get the sense that your romanticizing them.
Thanks for sharing. I really see the mirror even more after the video
In thread next door. She is so honest and unaffected even when referring to her
Vanity alter ego I sense a great deal of honest when she is reflecting on that part of her persona.

She said in the 80s that her and Prince had a great connection but didn't bring out the best of each other. She wondered in her writing if they were brought together by angels or demons.

Yup. I get that. Been there.
Sometimes God allows something so both people can learn something.
I think their relationship was great but also showed each of them where they needed more work on themselves.

I feel she left so they could both grow.
Maybe he knew that and that's why he respected her so much.
It's not easy to do what she did: leave Prince.

That would not be easy, to leave prince, and when she talks about that she had too, I sense no regret yet can still sense her deep love for him.

Oh yes. This was only a year after she left. When speaking of him she is still in pain. She said later that she suffered.

Another pic of older Vanity because the one posted in the video is so matronly.
