Watching it right now. They're talking to her a quick bit about Prince and her album. She's singing TGL and some new song which samples an old song. The first lines are from the national anthem, which brings to mind Prince's "America".

Now it sounds like she's singing the whole fucking national anthem to a funk song sample. She's kneeling during part of the song.

She's a gee-tar player now, too. Then she gets back on timbales ends the song, and does her solo-with-the-elbow-thing and knocks over her cymbal routine. Everyone's "OMG GIRL THAT'S AMAZING!"

Flags and anthems are empty symbols, devoid of meaning if we do not uphold the principals they are supposed to stand for rather than sticking our heads in the sand and pretending not to see what's happening.

I came up during the sixties and seventies just like Sheila, so this is nothing to clutch pearls over IMO. Im more concerned that people lack the knowlege to put things in historical context.

It's disrespectful if one is uneducated on what an upside down flag means. It means someone is in distress, and I would imagine a vast majority of black Americans have felt some sort of distress in this country for a very, very long time.

I just had a chance to watch the show yesterday. Shelia really put on an incredible performance. I actually ordered the CD after I watched it.
