Art is auctioned all the time. It is rarely donated. In fact, the price of famous paintings is partly what raises their status in popular culture.
In 1996, I went to London and visited the National Gallery. There was displayed Van Gogh's Sunflowers. this painting was behind a layer of glass and guarded by an armed officer. This painting was originally purchased in an auction in 1987 for 39.9 million dollars and ..I am sure its been loaned out to museums for years.. . Prince's shoes just went for 75,000 dollars. A private collecter isn't going to go around wearing them or letting their kids play with them if they pay that kind of money. More than likely they are going to loan them out to Hard rock Cafe and museums etc.

The people selling the auction items were all very close to prince, it seems they knew his importance from very early on and thought to save anything he touched, anything he signed, wore or was associated with. A lot of it is literally garbage, but prince is one of a few people so iconic that fans will pay thousands and thousands for garbage. I don't think prince would have a problem with people selling items like that, that associates had the foresight to save so long ago, it does show the level of superstardom prince achieved. I also think some stuff was stolen for sure, which is not cool, and selling some of the very personal stuff seems inappropriate to me, but at the end of the day it is up to the person that has it. Hopefully the items will be going to a better home so to speak...if someone pays thousands for a piece of paper, chances are they will love it...

So I doubt he would be fine with and that is the reason they waited until after he died. I honestly think that if they could get their hands on the clothes he died in they would auction those off as well.

the thread is about 'Fine line between legacy building and callous exploitation'
All 3 have beed discussed many times on the org before. Members have been directed to create their own debate about Censorship on the Org and declined. This is not what Purplerabbithole intended.

That's right everyone around Prince hated his guts and couldn't wait for him to die and have been waiting for him to die since 1986 or 1996 when they originally obtained the items.. And Prince was an unlovable piece of shit and the people around him are the worst kind of opportunists. Come on, Laura. People are complicated especially where fame and money are concerned but these are just items and nothing Susannah just said was even close to shade. She waited a year and a half to sell that stuff. I prefer her selling his stuff to collectors with nice stories to accompany them, then Mayte selling his stuff while he was alive (garage sale) while making fun of him, the tackiness of the wedding dress etc on a reality show in which her mother spits on the floor with the mention of his name and she complains about not getting Purple Rain money, and then she releases that very personal yet one-sided book pegged as a love story on the anniversary of his death with a salicious People magazine promoting it.

I don't agree at all. Even Mayte wouldn't do that. Okay, her mom might...(under a pseudonym...LOL).

To what museum
Again your assumption being doey eyed about Prince doesn't mean that value will translate to a museum.

I have asked OFFS directly several times, but I am not getting a reply Would someone care to weight in on how the impersonators, cover bands and NPS is Any different. They are selling "prince" as well. How is it different to not be ok with that, but ok with the other? I am asking???

I'll be the only one to say this I guess but I see the legacy building part as being the heirs/family's responsibility now and from what we've already heard, there are warehouses full of things that Prince kept. These people are free to do whatever they want with those items they own and I don't think they have to give them away to PP, the heirs, nor any organization. The legacy is not theirs to continue building, they already had their part in building it when they worked with Prince. Ok then we can also stop critiquing the families decisions on how they Handle the music and releases and such too, right?? Since it is their sole job To legacy build. I'm ok with that.

How do we discuss things here without discussing?? That is why this exists right?? Just trying to talk. If we don't differ to a degree then where is the discussion bit.

They weren't holding onto stuff it was their property. If your mother gave you a sweater, it is yours, you can do with it whatever you want, and there is nothing she or anyone can say about. . Comparing Impersonators and Cover Bands with Sheila E the Family the Time, the Revolution, Vanity/Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, NPG etc really?

If you see people who have nothing absolutely nothing to do with the music/era/videos/concerts/albums as the same as those who did/do have to do with the music/era/videos/concerts/albums, then I don't know what else to say.

Aren't some past associates working with them too? I know you stated you felt Andre Cymone shouldn't do P's Material with NPG now. I'm not sure why that is not ok. This is just a discussion about fine line of legacy. I think Andre doing something with NPG is fine way to build legacy. I am Asking how /why that is viewed as a no no. Care to answer why?
