This weekend’s Momentum – Hot Glass | Cool Music Festival, sponsored by the Toledo Arts Commission and ProMedica, will kick off with members of Prince’s own band, the New Power Generation, performing The Music of Prince with the Toledo Symphony in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Promenade Park, downtown Toledo. NPG, as the band is known, backed Prince on most of his early ‘90s releases, including Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls and the Love Symbol Album. The band effectively disbanded during Prince’s mid ‘90s feud with his record label, Warner Bros., during which time The Purple One adopted an unpronounceable symbol to release new music. The band also backed Prince on his last album, 2015’s Hit n Run Phase Two. Last April NPG reunited to play a tribute concert at Prince’s Paisley Park compound in Minneapolis, then embarked on a summer-long tour. The music continues Saturday with Momentum After Dark: Warehouse District featuring more than 10 bands and performers from a wide-range of genres in venues across downtown Toledo. They played with the Symphony in my city also. It was promoted as Prince's NPG band. Everyone kept asking me if I was going, and I said I dont know who the eff these people are but they are NOT the NPG. | |
