So were The Hookers with Jamie as lead singer a proper group? Did they perform anywhere or put out any music? How long were they together? Did Jamie and Susan's sister quit the group? I'd like 2 know more.

Nope,The Hookers was not a proper group. It was more like an idea/concept,which led to Vanity 6.As far as I know, the Hookers didn't record any songs.Jamie and Susan's sister didn't really quit, they were replaced with Vanity and Brenda as Prince began to assemble the 'real' group.

The Hookers/Vanity 6, home studio, late 1981 – early 1982
Moral Majority #1
Vagina – also the name offered to Denise Matthews when she joined The Hookers in January 1982

Home studio, early 1982
All The Critics Love U In New York (5:55)*
Do Yourself A Favour #2 (previously “If You See Me”) (8:41) (Pepé Willie)
Money Don’t Grow On Trees – possibly intended for The Hookers
No Call U #1 (3:02)

WET DREAM

My lips start shakin' when I see him walkin' down the street
Of all the boys in school, he's the only one I wanna meet
If he combs his hair, all my girlfriends start 2 scream
He's so clean, he's the number one star of my wet dream
I get so angry if I see him with another dame
I start 2 tremble and I don't even know his name
If he takes her 2 the soda shop, guess who's gonna buy the ice cream?
She gives him all her money 'cause he's the star of her wet dream

While specific recording dates are unknown, initial tracking took place in Summer 1981 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions that produced Make-Up, Drive Me Wild and I Need A Man). The tracks were intended for an album titled The Hookers, which was abandoned in Fall 1981, and which later evolved into Vanity 6. Vocal overdubs by Vanity and Brenda Bennett were added in Spring, 1982, when the band had evolved into Vanity 6.

A later track, planned for a projected second album by Vanity 6, was titled Wet Dream Cousin due to its similar musical feel to this track; the two are otherwise unrelated, however; see Wet Dream Cousin for details of that track.

LET’S GO CRAZY!

The tour ran through the 1981 holiday season and, after a nearly month-long break, began again at the end of January in 1982. Brenda enjoyed her various jobs and was having a great time being out on the road with her husband, but she had begun to feel a little restless music-wise and wondered if and when she’d get back to making her own music again. And that’s when fate stepped in. Or, to be more precise, that’s when Prince stepped in!

The tour resumed after the holidays and it was about to become a pivotal moment in Brenda’s musical history and career. As wardrobe attendant and organizer to Prince, during this one afternoon, she was setting up his make-up station and getting his clothes ready for that night, the first show of the new year at a university in the Midwest. As she moved about the room, Prince came in, sat down at the make-up station and began to style his hair in preparation for the show. He put a cassette tape into his player on the table; it was a rough mix of the song “Stand Back” by Stevie Nicks. Stevie had contacted him sending him the tape for suggestions and his critique in the hopes of collaborating on a song together. Brenda began unconsciously to sing along as she was working not realizing that Prince had stopped what he was doing and was listening. Prince told her he didn’t know that she could sing and remarked that she could be the other “hooker.” When she asked what he meant by that, he explained that he was putting together a female group and that he thought she’d be just right for the project. Prince envisioned the group as a trio and he and Brenda discussed the idea with Roy who thought it was a great idea. Brenda accepted the offer.

Shortly after the “Controversy” tour wrapped up in April, Brenda found herself in Chanhassen, Minnesota to begin working on an album for Prince’s girl group project. By the time she’d arrived, the other two women, Susan Moonsie and Denise Matthews, were already there, Denise had been rechristened “Vanity,” and the group had been christened “Vanity 6.” Vanity had been pegged as the group’s principal vocalist and focal point, their frontwoman, but this was not to be a typical setup like Diana Ross & The Supremes with Ross singing all the songs and Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard providing backing vocals and Berry Gordy pulling all the strings.

(To set the record straight concerning Prince’s use of the word “hooker,” he originally intended to call the group The Hookers and had enlisted Susan Moonsie, who was then his girlfriend, and his high school friend Jamie Shoop and was looking for a third woman to complete the lineup. Around the time he offered the opportunity to Brenda, Jamie dropped out of the project to get involved in the business end of things and was replaced by Denise and the Hookers name was retired.)

Moral Majority is an unreleased track recorded in 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio,Chanhassen, MN, USA. The track was recorded for possible use on Vanity 6's album Vanity 6, but the song was not included on the release. Further work was done on the track on 1 and 2 January, 1984 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (during the same session as We Can Fuck (later renamed We Can Funk), which was also labeled Moral Majority on the working order, as the track's title was not considered suitable), creating a version by Apollonia 6.

The track is named after the Moral Majority political organization in the United States which had an agenda of evangelical Christian-oriented political lobbying. The group was founded in 1979 by evangelical fundamentalist Southern Baptist pastor, televangelist, and a conservative commentator Jerry Falwell. The song opposed the movement, which clearly stood against the sexuality displayed by the likes of Prince and Vanity 6.

Vanity 6 version

  • Vanity - lead vocals (assumed)
  • Jamie Shoop - vocals
  • Susan Moonsie - vocals
  • Roy Bennett - vocals
  • Prince - all instruments (assumed)

HAHAHA Yes U R right.
Susan looks like a girl playing dress up in her mothers room with her girlfriends.

The addition of that board with the lingerie makes it look so 'adult shop'

And there is the blond bomb shell to the side

Sorry... my bad.

I "assumed" it was Brenda that was there when Denise arrived in March.

I just checked, Denise doesn't write that the name of the second girl in the room was Brenda.

I don’t remember what I wrote when I described the living room scene in the Morris Vanity thread.

I do believe I did post a picture of that page from her unpublished book.

.

Denise does mention Susan's sister after that first meeting in the living room and after talking to Prince.

Only Susan's name is mentioned during that first meeting in the living room.

Based on how she wrote it and because of Prince's apparent agenda in how these women met, I assumed that Brenda was the one speaking, stating “this is Susan, Prince’s girl.”

.

Denise then suggestively writes about what she saw later that night, but leaving it to the reader’s imagination to determine what may or may not have occurred between Susan, Prince and Susan’s sister. However, given everything he had done that day, I (and Debbie) believe Prince did it (staged it) for Denise benefit, to see the 3 of them “making their way into Prince’s bedroom.”

.

Right... knowing she was in love with him, he took a girl in each arm and walked them into his bedroom right in front of her on the first night she was there.

Except for describing how she felt, and saying she will never let him touch her again (riiiight) she says nothing more about it and she doesn't know what happened behind closed doors.

I just thought it was a bit over the top for all of that to happen to Denise in one day.

Then again, staging it for Denise to see sounds just as bad, if not worse.

.

Denise thinking it or believing it all these years for her to write about it is sad if she believed it. Then it also makes one wonder what effect it had on all her decisions regarding being with him if she believed it.

I remember this story you told TOban. Okay, so it was Susan's sister that was there not Brenda. Did she write that any other woman lived in the house besides her? It seems to me that Prince was upset with Denise about something at that time. Hadn't he just had her blocked from a concert as well before she got there? I also have an Interview with Andre where he implied that he had a fling with Denise before Prince. I doubt it, but who knows, maybe it was rumors that Prince heard? Robin Power also said Prince told her that in the beginning when they first met, Prince got freaked out after finding and reading Denise's little black book to then write LRC about her. Could be all those scenarios led to that first meeting with the "hookers." Did she mention anything regarding any of these arguments? I sense that Prince deliberately went out of his way trying to hurt her/get back at her even if nothing happened between Prince, Susan, and her sister. The fact that he wanted her to see that shows what he was trying to do. It seems something went down between them before she even got there.

Out of all the unreleased songs that we have heard about, this is the one I am dying to hear! smile I love the concept.

That reads like a possible scene from the Second Coming movie

I believe there is a clip of Susan & Jamie walking into a room that is bright

Actually, Debbie’s immediate reaction was “That didn’t happen!!!” Adding that it was a movie or she dreamt it, then continued on to disclose some of the more salacious adventures of Vanity.

My first thought was “no wonder she (Debbie) assumed something was happening or had happened between me and Denise. But my mind mainly remained fixed on her quick denial and defense of Prince. Over the years she would sometimes include “I Know For A Fact That… that didn’t happen.” I never ask but for the longest I suspected due to his genius. I just wasn’t that curious to know any more than I did about Prince.

Personally I am or rather I appear to be aloof and a bit of a prude.

.

It is evident from these pictures that Prince had an image in mind for his vision of a sexy girl group, long before he met Denise.

Denise apparently fulfilled his wildest dreams in her becoming his ideal sexy center piece in the persona of Vanity.

Denise even exceeded her own expectations as Vanity.

What most don’t know is, while others may have been playing sexy dress-up she was bona fide, her resume reads as if Vanity was simply Denise unleashed, and in this role she would overachieved.

.

The scene she writes of those three is tame enough for Disney by comparison to what she writes about Vanity.

So from what you've read in Denise's writings and heard from Denise and your wife, would you say that Vanity's sexy and provocative image was largely by her own design? I listened to a lot of Denise's interviews she would give on internet radio shows over the last 10 years or so. She would say that she used to argue with Prince over how sexy Vanity 6 dressed and performed because he tried pushing her further than she wanted to go but he was paying her so she had to go along with it.

I also wondered once she went solo, did she keep her sexy and provocative image because she felt that's what Motown and the fans wanted, or at least for a time that's how she wanted to portray herself? In 1 interview she gave after becoming born-again, Denise said she would often go home and cry about what she was doing and came to hate the entertainment business.

Again, thank you for sharing with us.

It all sure does look like a dream.
I remember reading a post by one of the staff on hand, and they remember a little more than usual happening on the production.

I believe Prince heard of Rick James planning his girls group and beat him to the bunch with Vanity 6

Remember Prince was fascinated with the twin women. It shows up in his writing a lot and his mom was a twin.

We do not know if Susan and her sisters are twins but their is a enough of a resembalance that I am sure it got his mind going and we do know their are stories about Vanity and Prince running around on each other.

Also the drummer Carmine Apiece said in his book he stayed in an apartment that was rented by WB and walked in one day and found Prince and Vanity in one of the bedrooms in bed. He said this was around the time of the Rolling Stones concert and he has a chance to speak to Prince when he got back from the show.

Also Dez Dickerson said that one minute Vanity was with Rick James and the next minute she was on the bus with them doing the Controversy tour. So Vanity was around in 81-82.

“His name was Prince,” Appice writes. “And he was funky.”

Prince was “very quiet and introverted,” and when he spoke, it sounded like “somebody was whispering at me from two miles away.”

Their relationship was cordial. Once, Appice walked into the room and found Prince in bed with Vanity. He quickly apologized and backed out.

Appice was also there when Prince opened for the Rolling Stones at LA’s Memorial Coliseum."

Hi Toban, I just tried to comment and thank you in the WA thread for answering my question, but the thread expired. I wanted to comment about the book ideas you were contemplating regarding Denise's life. Your ideas sound promising. Debora's knowledge regarding her sister's life journey would be a valuable standpoint to your own. Denise has many fans apart from this site if all the blogs, fan sites and Facebook pages about her are any indications. We yearn to hear about all facets of her life. The good and the bad. It seems everyone gets all their information about Vanity/Denise from four to five paragraphs in Prince books. The go to favorite, "The Rise Of Prince" formerly known as "Possessed" is quoted with authority. A book that chooses to only portray disavowing aspects about her. Denise is portrayed as an empty shell who is only noted in the book as an annoyance, for sex, and the hardship she endured. It excludes even an ounce of acknowledgment for what she brought to the group Vanity six. Or what she brought to Prince. Not even the acknowledgment of love from Prince's own mouth would she receive when he told the world on the night of his tribute to her that they used to love each other deeply. Instead, the author went out of his way to bypass and exclude prince's significant comment to only state the antidote where he talked about throwing her in the pool. When you see glaring omissions like that, and omissions about her success and achievements with Vanity Six, it's hard not to get the feeling that there is a push from some to discount her time in his life.

She played a substantial role in Prince's life in the early days when Prince was at his crossroads. I was there. I saw it. I remember it. She was impactful, but yet I read the "Making Of Purple Rain." She was barely a footnote in that book although she had a lot to do with the beginning stages of the movie.

I was a fan of Vanity as a little girl, energized by her beauty/charisma/and sex appeal, excited that she was my hero's girlfriend. Galvanized that she was someone I could relate to. I admit that neither she nor Prince was the greatest of role models for a pre-teen girl. Nonetheless, I adored both of them and they were my less than perfect crutches. I am moved that years later here I am energized by her again, and although still excited that she was my hero's girlfriend, this time I'm also energized by her life journey. The strength and faith it took to walk away from "Vanity" to treasure the woman she had become in Denise. Her reverence for Jesus... Relating to her in a whole different way... Although nowhere close to where she was in her spiritual life, (still working on that) what a great role model she turned out to be to me in the long run because she is still what I aspire to be like even thirty years later.

So yes Toban, Please tell us all the aspects of her life. Don't exclude her time BEFORE Prince- the up and coming DD Winters. Her art, her writing, her crafts. Don't exclude her time WITH Prince- her success as Vanity six, the excitement she stirred, the little boys first crush, her tumultuous relationship with Prince. If true, don't exclude the hardships that the books talked about, but please tell us about her triumphs with him as well. Tell us about her life AFTER Prince- all the movies she did, all the young men's hearts she stoled. Tell us about her trials with drugs and her recovery from addiction, tell us about how Jesus saved her life, about her ministry and her passion for God. If this is your wish Toban pray for guidance, and God Bless!

9th December, 1981
The concert in Houston is filmed for a planned documentary, tentatively called 'The Second Coming'. Several concerts on the tour were filmed by rock video pioneer Chuck Statler, who had worked with Devo and Elvis Costello. His Minneapolis-based Location Services filmed Prince in concert and off-stage, but the resulting documentary was never released.
- Entry taken from Per Nilsen's 'Prince - A Documentary'

[Part I]
Hey, thanks RC! Gee, I'm probably gonna use up all my good stories within a week, but here goes...

I didn't work on Purple Rain, but in 1982 I did work on the unreleased film that preceeded it. This was originally just going to be a simple concert film and Chuck Statler was hired as the director. I had worked as a grip/gopher on a few of Chuck's shoots so I got this gig too.

We were filming Prince at (I think) the St Paul Civic Center. They were using multiple cameras and real film, not video, so that meant that every 10-15 minutes a fresh film magazine was needed for each camera. My job was to ferry an exposed magazine from a camera on the floor in the middle of the crowd, all the way to backstage. There a couple of guys did nothing but remove the exposed film from the magazines inside black bags, and put fresh film in. Then I would bring a fresh magazine back to the camera in the crowd. Fortunately one of the bouncers kind of adopted me, and blazed a trail thru the crowd each time.

So, then the concert's over and we're done, right? Wrong! A few weeks later, I hear from Chuck that Prince has now decided to film some scenes to "frame" the concert sequences. For one scene, he wants a roomfull of dolls. So Chuck and I go to this nutty old doll collector's house to rent a roomfull of dolls. She's got a lot of 'em, all right, although she also has a wildly inflated idea of what they're worth. I don't collect dolls, but I do collect other stuff, and these were mostly pretty cheesy dolls. But anyway, Chuck worked out a deal with her and we scored the dolls.

Then a couple of days later, the film crew heads out to Prince's house in Chanhassen, where the filming was going to take place. The house wasn't purple yet, it was just a fairly ordinary large suburban house, kind of sparsely furnished really -- but there was a grand piano in the living room in front of a mirrored wall.

So we spend a few hours getting the props and equipment set up. The gaffer (electrician) decides to tap into Prince's power line ahead of the meter and get some free power. Then we took a break to eat before we started filming. In the early evening we're just getting started, about 8000 watts of lights get fired up, and then all of a sudden, pweeeenngg! All the lights go out. The power load was too much for Prince's transformer and completely fried it.

We're way out in the sticks and it takes forever just to figure out who to contact, and by now it's getting a little late. We finally get a hold of the right guy and he says he'll send somebody out.

So we've got time to kill, and for a while we sit around in the living room while Prince plays that grand piano. Finally the power guys get there, and luckily the gaffer remembered to remove his line tap so they didn't see what he was up to. They replace the transformer and leave. It's kind of late, but we decide to keep going and get at least something done.

So we get started again, get stuff set up again, get those 8000 watts of lights fired up again, and then all of a sudden, pweeeenngg! All the lights go out AGAIN! The new transformer was fried too! So we have to go thru the whole mess again, and of course this time it's even later and the power company guys are not at all happy -- especially when they get to the house. This time the gaffer forgot to remove his line tap so they realized what he was doing. Boy were they pissed! Everything finally gets straightened out without too much bloodshed, but this time it's so late that we decide to bag it for the night and pull an all-nighter the next evening instead.

Did we ever get any filming done? If so, why didn't the film ever come out? And how does Vanity 6 fit into the picture? These questions and more will be answered in my next post -- suspenseful, huh? Meanwhile, here's a Polaroid of Prince that I fished out of the trash at the shoot . It was just taken to check the light so you can only see his silhouette -- but it's him. Take my word for it!
