Not digging this new Sheila E look She’s got the Morticia Addams loom going which isn’t flattering at all. And really if she wanted to send a message she should have sent it to her candidate Hillary Clinton who lost to the biggest embarrassment on the face of the earth, Donald Trump. America doesn’t need a message from her. But hey I know free country, free speech. I just won’t be listening to it. SheilaEdrummer (@SheilaEdrummer) 8/7/17, 8:33 PM NEWS ALERT! Watch the New Sheila E. Video 'FUNKY NATIONAL ANTHEM' (Message 2 America) release Friday, August 11th upcoming Album 'ICONIC' Paisley Park is in your heart

I like it but I'd wouldn't recognize her. She kind of favors Natalie Cole to me here

She changes up her look from time to time. I really wonder what the hell her polictics has to do with not listening to her music. More than half the CD is covers.

I saw this and had to look twice, to be sure it was her. I am not a fan of the "resist" movement and this could be considered "cultural appropiation" by those same people.
Us Puerto Ricans assuredly have african bloodlines, but here she's trying to hard.

can you explain this? Sheila E isn't Puerto Rican. So I want to understand u before really replying.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
She is not Puerto Rican. She identifies herself as Mexican/Creole
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I am Puerto Rican. Without doing ancestry dot.com, if she's "creole" I am not stretching it to say she also has bloodlines.
She changed her appearance to look more african american to reach out to that movement.

In her book she said growing up in Oakland around black people she had to pick an ethnic idenity to keep from getting beaten up. So she rolled with the black people. I do not think she is appropriating anything she grew up around black people seemed more close to her mom's people who are from New Orleans then her Mexican dad. It is called survial.
She said her dad did not even speak Spanish around the kids and she did not relate to Mexican culture until she got a little holder.

If you read her book, she has always had an identity more closer to people of African descent in America. She didn't even identity as Mexican. She connected more to her Creole mother.
Sheila E and her brother Juan even though growing up with the Latin Jazz via their father, have always played with people like George Duke, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Ritchie, Herbie Hancock, Diana Ross, etc
And she was rocking Afro's in the 70s, even though that is not a determiner of ethnicity.

JC yourself. I said I was Puerto Rican.
She's obviously darker in the pick. It's not a natural tan. She's on FB all the time as light skinned as ever.
Why would she make herself up purposely darker in a protest song?

THAT IS WHY THE PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO CHANGE THINGS BACK THEN. Being close to 60, Sheila remembers that and is trying to help bring that mentality back at a time when she feels it's needed. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I corrected it as soon as I saw it.
Third: So she did a whole photo shoot and happened to be darker than she is in protest shoot? She's not portraying any "hippie vibe" here. A raised fist is a symbol black power protest.

I follow her on FB. She's not that dark. It's a photo shoot... there was a planned look. You don't show up and say let's take some pics.

I am old enough.
I am not hung up with her skin color. I'm amazed that we can't admit it was done with purpose. It has to be the same for all. Katy Perry goes Geisha and it's appropiation.
The Black Power raised fist - "By any means neccessary" is not something I am comfortable with.
Making up? It's right in front of you. One she's going for the hippie thing (all bright, Blonde wig, peace sign on her head and the other Urban brick wall, darker skin tone and big black power fist over her head. )
